A Belated Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year to all.

I'm personally thankful to all who make IDPA possible. There are so
many hard working people some paid, mostly volunteers, that make
IDPA work.

I've discovered within sport shooting one will find some of the
finest people on the earth. I'm honored and humbled to have the
opportunity to associate with such fine individuals. (They're also
some of the funniest people I've ever met.)

Again, thanks to the 1000's of unpaid volunteers, SO's, MD's, club
officers, scorekeepers, property masters, range masters, etc. who
make IDPA what it is - your efforts benefit us all. Thank you.

====================================================================
December 15 is a very important date in American history-it is Bill of Rights
Day! Why? On this date in 1791, The Bill of Rights became part of the United
States Constitution. This was only four years after the delegates to
Constitutional Convention of Philadelphia signed the Constitution and only
three years after the Constitution became the Law of the Land. The Bill of
Rights, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence are the most
important documents in our nation's founding and history.

What is the Bill of Rights? It is the first ten amendments to the United
States Constitution. An amendment is a change or addition to the Constitution.
Why did our Constitution need ten amendments so soon after its adoption? This
is one of the most interesting stories about the early days of our country.
Some of our founders, like Patrick Henry, felt there were not enough freedoms
and rights mentioned in our Constitution. Others, like James Madison, felt our
Constitution protected all the people's rights and freedoms even though they
were not mentioned. The compromise between the two groups is the Bill of
Rights. Over the last 211 years, the Bill of Rights has been used by many
people to ensure their freedoms.

This is from a Doctor friend of mine.

A number of 26 is of some concern. If the level rises above 40, your
kidneys can be damaged. Above 60 will result in nerve damage. A level
above 150 is considered an emergency and can lead to convulsion, coma, brain
damage and even death.

The number of 26 was my number.

What Lead Levels are Considered Elevated in Adults?

a.. At levels above 80 µg/dL, serious, permanent health damage may occur
b.. Between 50 and 80 µg/dL, serious health damage may occur
c.. At lead levels between 30 and 50 µg/dL, health damage may be
occurring, even if there are no symptoms
d.. From 20-30 µg/dL, regular exposure is occurring. There is some
evidence of potential physiologic problems.
e.. From 1-20 µg/dL, lead is building up in the body and some exposure is
occurring
6 micrograms is the typical level for U.S. adults. Some exposure is
occurring.

We use Wolf ammo. Cheap and not bad. I don't recall exactly, but the pattern
was tighter than 6", but not as good 3"...then again, for us the price of
the ammo wasn't worth the difference! We use alot of S&B for handgun
shooting (9, 40 & 45), and Black Hills for distance shots with the long
guns. Good results.

7.69x39 is so inexpensive to shoot it's a no-brainer to get an SKS for a low
cost, fun gun that has some history to it.

I had mine checked for the first time about 3 years ago, it came back at 35
of whatever the units are. I was shooting A LOT indoors, two-three times a
week in the winter, and using lead bullets.
I no longer use ANY lead bullets, indoors or out, and am meticulous about
washing my hands after a shooting or reloading session. My level is now
down to 23.

Hi Daryl, I shoot 2-3 times a week indoors during the fall and winter months
and had my blood lead level checked last year. It was high than normal, if
I remember the numbers correctly it was around 28 ppm, sound right? High
anyway. Doctor was concerned. I reload allot, and weld on occasion at
work. My Zinc was also high. What was your lead/zinc number? From what
the doctor told me, the elevated zinc number is a byproduct of the body's
eliminating of the lead. Let me know. M.

I have come across a theory that some are tossing around that indirect lead
poisoning is genetic. Basically, they are saying that not everyone will get
lead poisoning from handling lead. Only those who have a genetic marker in
their DNA have the potential for high levels of lead in the blood. This
theory would go a long way to explain many people who work on indoor
ranges, at commercial reloading companies, or lead smelting plants never
had high blood level readings.

Everyone, thanks for the input. I agree, the SKS is a fun shooting
rifle, but my buddy is set on improving it. So, the quest continues.
We'll probably end up doing a modification of whatever mount is picked
up. The big problem is that the rear sight is broken (the right side
pin was broken, so it bounces with each shot). That, and he really
wants a 4 MOA sight on it.

Again, thanks for the great advise!

Keith

I have the Williams sight kit, which has a fiber optic on the front and
peep
on the rear. Its item #962-000-018 from Brownells. You can see it at
http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=16333&title=
AK%2fSKS+ADJUSTABLE+REAR+SIGHTS&s=36201#36201.
The kit lists for $39.95 plus shipping.

Tom is right. The SKS is a great gun, and fun to shoot. Don't screw it
up
with "improvements"!

Way I read it, "nor cruel and unusual" means we can have one but not both,
otherwise they would have used the nor/or construction found elsewhere in
the Bill of Rights. And the way I read "cruel" is "disproportionate to the
crime." For instance, an eye for an eye would be unusual, but not
disproportionate. A refreshing blast from the past that would bring the
consequences of crime back into focus. For instance, if the police busted a
john, what would the judge do, make her pay him? Definitely puts victimless
laws in question. But it would be spot-on in terms of proportionality and
deterrence for things like child molestation and vehicular manslaughter.

(also posted on IDPAforum)

I noticed that a couple of matches last year got away from t-shirts and went
with long sleeve mock turtlenecks which look nice but for me at least are
only practical for cooler weather. I was thinking a "nicer" match shirt that
would be better for summer would be a golf shirt or maybe one of the polos
with the NASCAR style checkered collars?

We put one of the covers on a ChiCom SKS so we could fit it with a scope.

It had to be manipulated to some degree because it interfered with the
action. After that was remedied, the scope wouldn't stay aligned. We didn't
do any scientific study, but it seemed the vibration of the action was too
much for the scope and hooded mount.

We mounted the scope (it was really more of a short 4x/red dot size; not
long enough to interfere with the stripper clip as John aptly cautioned).

Maybe (?) the solution is to look at a side mount, akin to the AK mount on
the receiver. Either that, or look at the rear peep sight being made for the
SKS. It's fairly pricey...I think around $80 or $90, and I don't know if
you'd have the same problem we had with the scope.

I remember someone telling me that the SKS is a really good weapon. It works
well for what it was intended to do. But, don't screw around with it. The
more you do, the worse it gets. Good luck. It's a fun gun to shoot.

Now that's good stuff... :)

Although I was disapointed that there will be no
Thunderwear shirts produced... :(

I don't have a scope on my Yugo SKS, but here is some information that might
help.

There are several cheap mount kits that replace the dust cover. These
don't work very well because the dust cover moves around under fire. Some
kits have screws to keep the dust cover from moving, but these don't work
much better. Its possible to drill and mount from the frame, but this is a
bigger deal. (See http://www.surplusrifle.com/sks/quickdetach/index.asp.)
Any scope mounted in the rear may interfere with loading by stripper clips.
I suppose you could convert the SKS to take AK mags, but these also get
mixed reviews.

Its also possible to mount a forward scope on the front hand guard, which
avoids the loading problem, but this also moves around under fire.

I agree the original sights aren't too good. I put on the Williams front &
rear, as sold by Brownells.

There are several SKS lists and boards. Your friend might want to look for
more information there.

You might want to go to www.ar15.com and check in at the AK forums. I'm
sure you will find a wealth of information.
