Hi Steve,

Don't know that I'd need/want custom fit boots for a sit-on-top foil, but I can see how it might be of interest to you for your stand-up foil.  There are some manufacturers that are making hardshell boot for slalom waterskis (Fogman, Goode, etc) and Connelly also now has boots, though not hardshell, that have a binding release for wakeboards and skis.  In either case having custom footbeds ("orthodics"), or even an off-the-shelf orthodic like SuperFeet, would go a long way to improving your fit and, thus, you control of the board. You'll also find they are much more confortable on your feet, especially on hard landings, because your feet stay put and don't jam forward.

Since I've received a number of queries from group members about where to get custom orthodics, below is what I've sent them. Note that the SUREFOOT, and probably any other brand, while designed for skiboots, can be used anywhere, even on the water (in addition to my skiboots, I have SUREFOOT footbeds in my hiking boots.  But note that SUREFOOT, or any custom orthodic, is not cheap. So I use the off-the-shelf Superfeet footbeds in most of my shoes/boots. At $25 a pair they're great and last nearly forever. I have them in running shoes and just keep moving the same pair of footbeds to each new pair of running shoes.  I also buy them and cut the fronts off, leavning just the healcup and arch support, for use in my dress shoes.  (this is a MUST if you have high arches or suffer from pantar facitis!)

If you're a serious, or even a semi serious skier custom orthodics and liners are ESSENIAL. Orthodics first, Liners second if you have to pace your purchasing. If you ask around you should be able to find THE ski shop near you that has the best boot fitter in your area. He/she will use one of several systems to get the job done. But do make sure you check around and have good references from real skiers (racers) before you go this route because a small shop is only as good as THE boot fitter that works there.

A better way--what both my wife and I (and most of my skier friends) do is use SUREFOOT (http://www.surefoot.com).  You can find a shop in/near most major ski towns and once fitted you get a lifetime guaranteed fit that's good in any SUREFOOT any where in the world.  Over the years my wife and I have had our boots "tweeked" at Whistler, Vail, Steamboat, Sydney Australia, and probably some other place I can't remember.  So that's worth a lot of money to have the capability to just walk in to any shop in the world during lunch and say "hey, I've got a hot spot right here. Fix it." and they do, no charge.  Can't do that using a local shop cuz if your boots hurt when you're in Banff, but your shop is in Dallas, or wherever you live, you'll have to wait until you get home and then try to remember where it hurt, hope they fix it, and then you won't know until the next time you go skiing.

Cheers,
Steve

Steve -

I'd like more info on the custom molded skiboot liners.
Do they also make custom molded liners for snowboard boots?

This might be helpful in making a tighter fit, thus better control, for riding my Rush Foilboard.
If you feel that your answer is useful to the group, feel free to post your reply to the group.

Regards,
Steve Landess

Hey David,

Yes, I'm sure you'll get wise 'cracks' from some of this group... ;-)

But I think you've got the right idea.  The man:machine interface in always critical to controling the machine.  This is exactly why I and many others have custom orthodics and custom molded liners in our skiboots.

You selling them yet? Price??

Since I switched from my old AC to my SSLE I've always felt something
lacking in the interface between my butt and the ski. It felt like I
was riding on the two points of my butt bone and could not keep myself
forward on the seat where I need to be. I had to tighten the belt
until my lap was bruised. Side to side control seemed lacking also.
Here is my solution. I'm sure there'll be a lot of wise cracks about
this, my kids already named it the butt bra. Anyway it works great and
I love it.

I'd have to charge $300 ea to cover the time it takes to make this, or tool up for mass production if there was a market for 1000 of them.  You may want it to fit your personal butt anyway so one size might not fit all.  Maybe a less extreme version would.

How do you get a custom molded ski boot liner?  I could use one of those.

Very cool indeed, but it is not afloat yet.  The ship is still in the shipyards, but the bow section has been cast.  The photo is an artist's alteration of the USS San Antonio.  Other ships in this fleet will be the USS Arlington and the USS Somerset.  More info here:

This is amazing!!       Here SHE is, the USS New York, made from the World Trade Center !  (see info below)

 USS New York

It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center .

It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite , LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept. 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. "It was a spiritual moment for everybody there."

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up." "It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back."

Hi - got to use a friend's Mothers Powerball to polish my foil.

After using his, I'm definitely gonna get my own.

Pretty much, to me, polishing is the worst part of owning & maintaining a foil.

In fact, I had decided to just let the damn thing tarnish & put up with the added drag.

But this gives me hope!  Would have thought it was less than $23.95, but guess not.

Hope others have the same experience & find it as helpful as I have.

Enjoy, Bob

Anyway it works great and
I love it.

Subject: Tennessee Fly-In - Catering Change & Items to bring with you

Tennessee Fly-In Participants:

We're looking forward to seeing every one soon!

Catering:   The marina restaurant will not be able to provide private catering for this year's Fly-In.  They will, however, have a portion of the restaurant roped off for us and we can order directly from the menu.   We hope this doesn't inconvenience anyone.  For those that have been to the Fly-In in the past, Zoom did mention he'd have some ca'jun cookin' in the restaurant one evening!

Here's the link for the restuarant's sample menu so you can get an idea for prices.  This is the 2006 menu, I'd assume prices haven't changed much.

Items to bring with you:

Sheets and pillowcases (the houseboats have pillows and blankets)
Towels and wash cloths
Sunscreen
Camera
Life jacket
And, of course, your hydrofoil gear

We'll see you next week!

The Tennessee Fly-In Team

> Just to make sure I (and everyone else) understand).
I think you are saying line tension is what you take
going into the trick, and line load is what you do on
takeoff. So, for example, if a rider cuts out into the
flats and almost squares up to the boat, there will be
low line tension. The rider can still load the line on
takeoff, but total pressure and height will suffer
because of low starting line tension. <

Line tension and load go hand in hand. If your
railing into the flats and don't load the line, your
not using the full potential of that tension you had.
If you have a semi-serious cut into the flats and
really load that tension you had, your not benefiting
from what could've been a 'big air'. Pretty much what
you said is true, but how can a rider load up the line
if he is squared up to the boat? I would think if he
did this, he'd put himself on his ear, per se.

>Conversely, if a rider cuts hard into the flats,
stays on edge, and leans back, there will be high
starting line tension, but no extra line load (in my
example). But if the rider drops the outside shoulder
and leans hard away on takeoff (line loading), then
max height can be achieved (with perfect technique).<

Well, I wouldn't suggest to someone to 'cut out into
the flats and lean back' to get the boost you want.
So yes, you would lose that momentum (tension) you had
before you 'leaned back'. Im not so sure about the
whole 'dropping the outside shoulder' thing. I
remember back in the day before I learned inverts,
people would tell me that the way to do a roll was to
dip you shoulder and look over the other one. I
remember dudes taking the hardest smacks trying this,
namely because they forgot the jump. If you cut out
and think of dipping your shoulder to roll, your
already bypassing the jumping part. Seperation of
your body before you reach the pinnacle of the air is
what kills almost everyone's potential. Most people
think that they need to 'flip' and get it done, but
its the opposite completly. You need to jump out of
the water, reach your pinnacle, then flip. THE, and I
repeat, THE only difference (to me) between an invert
and a straight air jump is the position your back is
in (in line with the strut) as you leave the water.
Im going to end there, cause this has probably gone
over many people's heads thus far. Oh ya, and as for
'leaning hard away from the boat on takeoff', I don't
this will get anyone very far, other than the fact
that you might get your arms ripped off or your ear
blown trying too hard to go big like this.

Take a look in the 'bigness' section of FF (that site is the best).
Shoulders should be a little forward over thighs as the foil exits the
water. To do this, you must load properly and when you do that (ie.
Darkside Dip) you can actually get forward on take off.

The easiest way to try this is a wake front roll. On take off, don't
lean back, but your chest forward as the foil exits the water
(actually in the air for a frame or two)... becareful because you
will launch bigger.
