Time is flying by faster than ever before. Here it is the beginning of
May. What happened to April? And soon to be June. What's special about
June?

- The first Monday is a public holiday in Ireland.
- Summer solstice June 20th to 22nd.
- Father's day is the third Sunday.
- Flag Day June 14th.
- World Cup, NHL & NBA playoffs, and the US Open
- June 31st is Weasel Stomping Day

These events pale in comparison to Nicole's 40th Birthday on June
14th. Yes, the big FOUR OH. A major milestone met.

In just over 4 weeks we'll be celebrating Nicole's b-day on June 9th
and 10th at Whatcom Lake in Bellingham WA. This is in conjunction with
the third annual Unofficial Mini FlyIn. Take out your calendar now and
mark it down.

Each year there have been more people coming to the Mini to have fun,
meet, learn, and generally have a great time. Kids of all ages are
welcome.

We meet at the lake in the morning around 10am, fly and have fun,
watch the idiots try to load their boats, and then back to Nicole's
house (a 5 minute drive) for BBQ, hot tub, and a game or two of pool.

Bring booze, food, boat, ski, sleeping bag, and other personal items.
No presents (maybe a card or small flower arrangement).

Let us know if you need a place to crash or anything else. We'll be
making a Costco run for steaks - they run about $12 ea and are well
worth it. Two people can eat one (well, except for Shrek and Dave).
Let us know and we'll pick up enough for all who want one. Nicole will
be doing the BBQing. And you know how well she bbqs steak...

Looking forward to seeing the old gang, and meeting new people!

I got my air roll dialed in this weekend, I actually have good line tension on the jump and through the whole trick……next up, more mobe attempts! I got to beat that fat boy at something!!

Well here goes. I purchased the Samson rack and was very impressed. It is well machined, very substantial and holds the foil very solidly. The t bar clamp cannot hold the foil with a cover on, but I am told that is intentional to insure that there is a really solid grip. In so far as that clamp definitely does its job, I think they made the right call vrs a more adjustable feature. There is a but, however. In rough water my rack started to swivel around. When the clamp is released, it is effectively “downhill†into my boat. So far so good, but the  rotating clamp just could not exert enough force to keep the foil from rotating around. I called Samson and they said they never had a problem like that before.  I also spoke to the foil-n.com guys who were equally surprised. I sent off pics to Samson and a few follow up emails and  phone calls. In spite of their initial good response ( and assurance that they would make good on it ), I have not heard anything for over a week.

All in all I think it is a great rack, probably the best, but there is definitely an issue with my adapter that needs to be addressed. I think they will eventually get to it but with short seasons, I think their customer service is definitely leaving much to be desired.

I will post an update following whatever resolution there is on my adapter.

I bought the CompTech (SkySki) rack and found it to be flawless. I think the vesatility it allows in regards to mounting is unparalled. If you want it to lean "downhill" into your boat you swivel the circuler part of the maunt to achieve that. I can achieve a tight fit with or without my cover and actually most of the time don't have it in with the cover. I did notice that at the NW Flyin that 90% of the people had their covers on though, I attribute this to having alot of people in most boats so when you bring the ski into the boat it is safer with so many noggins to knock!

In my opinion alot of thought, engineering and machine work went into the CompTech rack and it was a hard pill to swallow to (or cough up!) but after I had it I bought another as soon as I could afford it because with an inboard space is priceless!

Some time ago there was discussion regarding storage racks for hydrofoils. There was mention of the Honkola rack, which folds flat against the wall when not in use, but I do not know if that is still available. For what it is worth, here is a pic of a rack I just made using 2x4’s , carpeting and heavy duty shelf brackets from the depot.

Bud – The Tennessee Flyin has been held the weekend after Memorial Day for five straight years – until you started the GA Mountain Flyin. So, the TN Flyin has moved back to its original dates, nothing new.  With three flyins on the east coast, it only makes sense to have a little time between them so more people can attend two or three.  I’ve been talking with Cliff Woodman, who may organize the 2008 GA Mountain Flyin, about moving the dates to September.

"We have been asked not to have anymore spring events because of TN fly-in NEW

I think this is a load of %$##... who in their right minds would ask you to stop
having a fly-in? Whoever it was needs a public flogging.

Don't stop this fly-in because it competes with someone's dates who have
moved...that's crap. To be honest with you, it sounds like your fly-in is way
different than the TN fly-in anyway..... I'm not sure houseboats or tarnished
foils are for everyone.

And a fly-in doesn't have to be sanctioned to be a fly-in. USHA wants you to
because it shows USA waterski that hydrofoiling is having a bunch of events each
year and is bringing them in money. If it isn't sanctioned, it just doesn't
count in the USHA list...that's it. Some of the biggest fly-ins ever haven't
been sanctioned.

Please don't stop your organizing of a fly-in based on these two items!

Nice riding Geno – now I know why you were asking when the USHA Video Competition starts for 2007. Well, the video can be taken at any time in 2007, so that could work for you.

Hit that run at the USHA Nationals, and I would guess you would win. Of course, that is what makes the live competition a bit tougher – one shot.

Even with my limited attendance of fly-in's I would agree with
Brett's comments. After looking at both fly-in's (GA and TN) they are
very different and it would seam to me that they would draw different
kinds of crowds. GA sounds like a better place to take non-foilers
and children since it is land based and has lots of other ammenities
on site. TN seams to be a good fly-in for the die hard foiler who
wants to be on the water 24-7. I myself can go either way and will
probably try the TN fly-in next year. I mostly agree with the fact
that the dates are very close together and it makes it hard to attend
both unless you have lots of extra vacation time and money. If you
move it to much earlier there is the FL event to worry about. And
when you start talking about Sept there is the Fales River fly-in,
but thats not really East Coast, or is it??? Is the reason there are
no events in June, July, or Aug because it's to hot or are there to
many problems/conflicts with summer family vacations?

My 2 cents. See ya in GA, only 14 days to go!

good.... i'm not the only one that thinks this reeks of a big pile of sheeeeet.

I'm probably going to catch a lot of flak for this... but I've sat on my
feelings about this long enough... discouraging a fly-in, even if it is just for
when it is, is too much in my opinion. Why should USHA even care? I'll tell you
why....

Brad, what business is it of yours to influence anyone attempting to grow this
sport? This is not a personal attack on you, but have you too been bitten by the
greed bug that is known as USA Waterski? Remember when you used to get excited
about how many fly-ins there were going on? Sanctioned or unsanctioned, it meant
more to the sport....When they have to be sanctioned, more people at Fly-ins
means more money to USA Waterski does it not? After all, USHA membership has
dropped has it not? so more people have figured out that they can buy 2
temporarly memberships that covers them for the mandatory insurance fees of a
fly-in, or maybe two that they go to a year.

Even more, they charge the person putting on the fly-in a $75 club membership.
I'm sure this will raise as well. So the year I put on the sanctioned fly-in, I
paid $70 or so in dues (more I think because of my wife joined as well), and $75
in a club membership.

Here's more about our beloved mandatory insurance.... they raise our rates
every 2 years...for what? to build 2 (or 3 - I can't remember) ski lakes behind
their NEW facility, both of which I will never see, much less ever get to foil
in... no way are they deep enough...they are built for slalom and trick
competitions...yippeee...and even if tI wanted to slalom in them, do you think
they would let me walk up with my shiny USA Waterski member card and take a run?
hell no.

or what about the NEW waterski hall of fame? seriously? I'm going to travel all
the way to florida to walk through the halls of has-beens? I'd rather stay here
in the rain.... What is next? Are they going to build a ski boat mausoleum that
I can never really care about either? Keep raising the dues... see what happens
to members....

Think about it...what did your membership in USA Waterski really get you? A lame
magazine that tells how to hit 6 buoys, or throw a tantrum, or maybe how to
barefoot?... ok, sometimes that's cool, but what else? some free gifts to entice
you to join? let's see... you get a $50 coupon for $80. Wow...that seems like a
great deal.

Try asking for a copy of all their insurance payouts for the previous 5 years.
Then, out of those, try asking how many went without going into arbitration.
Your money is a on a one way road folks, and it aint towards your wallet.

USA Waterski has turned into a money grubbing (insert word here), that doesn't
care about us....they care about the bottom dollar....period.

Does anyone else think it's funny that we don't hear about how many members are
in USHA anymore?

we were sold the story that if we joined USHA and built up enough members that
we could become a legitimate sport. I bought in to this for a while... I even
offered to help draw more of you into it... but now, I say we are a legitimate
sport.... I don't need to be a member of a very costly organization to believe
that.

Now they are trying to influence who can and can't have fly-ins based on
sanctioning, and when you *should* have them.

If I seem bitter in this email. I am.

Brad, I can't believe that you would ever apply any negative or discouraging
voice at all towards someone trying to organize an event to promote the same
sport that you say you are supporting with USHA.

Even with my limited attendance of fly-in's I would agree with
Brett's comments. After looking at both fly-in's (GA and TN) they are
very different and it would seam to me that they would draw different
kinds of crowds. GA sounds like a better place to take non-foilers

Brett – Bud’s statements were a bit off, and I won’t go into public criticism of him. But, I will say that I had asked Bud to talk with the TN Flyin organizers before planning his event since the two locations are only 4 hours (by car) and two weeks apart. That just doesn’t make sense. Bud chose to hold his flyin without consulting the TN Flyin organizers.

And, TN did not move this year – they moved the last two years to try to put some time between the two flyins. But they couldn’t do it this year because the houseboats were not available. So, they went back to their original dates.

The TN Flyin organizers work harder than any other organizers because of their unique situation with the houseboats. No one sees all the work they do, but I have seen parts of it over the years and I know that Skydog and Sandy and Rob and Val put in a tremendous amount of work throughout the year. Most people just show up and have fun there, and that is how it should be, but it works because of all the preparation and planning they do.  Please thank them for their efforts – which go beyond the flyin and support the whole USHA organization. And please respect what they have done over the years to help all of the flyins.

As for sanctioning  “just not counting for USA Water Ski,” it is much more than that. First, there is the insurance issue. Second, USHA has built a relationship with USA Water Ski that is continuing to show fruit – one example is Geno’s Stunt Junkies show, which happened as a result of our affiliation (and a lot of talent from Geno). Although this year’s tv contract for the USHA Nationals fell through, there will be future opportunities for tv as a result of the work of many people within USHA and USA Water Ski. We need our members to support USHA and the events to continue our successes.

1 - On the insurance side, my old roommate was helped out twice by the extra insurance.  Granted he is some kind of freak to still be skiing after first breaking his back and on a separate occasion his neck!

2 - Don't know all the details, but I THINK having the sanctioned events helps protect the organizers.  An example - a girl on my last ski team had her ankle wrapped up in a rope ended up with large surgery bills.  Her insurance company proceeded to try and sue everyone in the boat and on the teams board of governors.

Not saying you need to have a sanctioned event, just do not think I would want to orginize an event without it.

Are my thoughts in 1 & 2 correct?
