I was down there over the July 4th weekend. There was another foiler
in the water, but not sure who it was.

I will be back down there Aug 24th-26th.

Yep, we had a great time, guys. Thanks to everyone involved. Good to see old friends & meet new ones.
The 3some was cool in the show. And it was great to see One way Dave stick his 2nd heli ever in the show! Great to see him stick it when the pressure was on!

I will say that the NW fly-in was a blast. Thanks to Ben for putting me up for a few days at his lake house and then on to the fly-in. Thanks to Brett for having a tent for me and kourtney to just step right into. Everybody wasjust so great at everything, but i must also add to Ben's post about Brett destroying me during the ski show. Brett is a great rider and just a super person but take it from me, Don't Ever Ride Doubles With Him. I am sure that everyone would love to see the vid.  LOL...
Other than that we just had a great time and look forward to doing it again.

he called out brettE who then had to match the 14 mph within 3 falls

the winning roll was capt mike at 12 mph... most humans couldn't have
hung onto the rope, he came around and the whole board went under.
both of my shoulders would have popped out. remember, we only got 3

i noticed that brettE didn't post the video of him destroying capt
mike when we were riding triples for the ski show!? what gives?

I can do them without any forward motion... I suppose a stipulation

My son, Jeff has been doing 12 mph gainers and rolls – gainer requires boat drive to turn away from him as soon as he jumps.

Jeff also rode away from his first front yesterday.  Lands them consistently but the handle eludes him at last second.  Well, it didn’t elude him yesterday and he was so excited he almost threw  the handle away in celebration.

There are several hydroils that are frequently in use on Lake Norris. I take
two
with me when I go down (about 3-5 long weekends per year). I'll be near
Stardust
and Sequoyah the weekend of 8/25 and near Shanghai the weekend of 9/14. If you
see an oversize red and white malibu with a black skylon, feel free to flag us
down. I know there are at least two others. One belongs to a guy named Will
who
has a floating house at Springs Marina.

Good luck and I am sure you will enjoy the sport.

100% agreed! In my industry I have trained our reps when the question of competition arises to merely say " I can't comment on their ability to service you but I can assure you if given the opportunity to be of service we will make you a satisfied and more importantly a loyal customer".

I should have been from Mississippi the "Show me state" I feel that a company should not bombard me with a litany of derogotive statements regarding the competition.Show me how your product is going to meet my needs and how well you will back it.

I find Air Chair’s website quite humorous. Most of their product description is spent knocking Sky Ski, saying how bad billet foils are, but now they’re building a billet foil??? What’s going on with that?  I think it’s also pathetic they spend all this energy defaming their competition’s product, instead of just explaining their own product and leaving it at that. Apparently, their product isn’t good enough to speak for itself.

I also love that picture of a broken 2-pc t-bar. I wonder what they used to tear that apart!!!

JP,

Historically, I would agree with you JP. However, with the G38 now available,
I suspect you MIGHT see a f ew switching from SS to Air Chair. It is definitely
a case of personal preference.

I just got back from Norris Lake, TN. yesterday and I was foiling all weekend. I
have seen a few foils on the lake but I doubt that you can rent them there. I
know I will be there over the Labor Day weekend and you are more than welcome to
ride mine. I live in Cincinnati so if you want to get together for a ride just
let me know. August is a bad month for me due to vacation but I'm sure we can
get you on a foil.

Hi all, I am looking into getting a hydrofoil for the family, but would
really like to try it out before spending the money. My wife and I
don't ski and she's reluctant to take the plunge.

We will be going on vacation to Norris Lake in TN in 2 weeks and are
curious if there are any places that would rent to us, or if there is
someone close to Norris (or Indianapolis, IN) that would rent to us to
try?

Thanks

Cool. I stand corrected. I hope for everyone's sake these are deeper & wider than the typical competition slalom ski lakes built here on the west coast.
I've had to repair a few of the wings & t-bars guy have hit bottom on these in the past. It's not a pretty sight & would be a bummer to hear about someone really getting hurt from hitting the bottom or the shore.

I searched our archives last night and read quite a few posts on cold water suck downs starting with this one way back then: Thu Mar 15, 2001 8:34 pm.

It was interesting to read about cavitation and prop wash and wake bubbles and out of the wake and cold water and tuning and filing and making the winglets shorter and dimpling with a drill in places like a golf ball, etc.  There was so much that I didn't even finish the year 2002.

I'm rather new in our group and fairly recent at the Air Chair.  I am able to fly and control it with the pro blade.  I jump out of the water and land it when I intend to jump out, but I make a submarine dive when I am trying to avoid coming out of the water and fail.  I also have experienced suck downs in some parts of the wake at low speeds.  I will guess that this is air bubble induced cavitation from particular parts of the wake that has air bubbles.  Combined with creating the necessary lift at fairly low speeds I am thinking that the foil blade is close to being at a stall and the air bubbles induce cavitation and create a stall condition.  But, that is just my guess.

Without reading all of our archives on the subject from the start of my wondering about this, I post this to cheat by asking about design and testing of different foil prototypes.  I am thinking that a shape like an air foil or like the cross-section of an airplane wing or the shape of a fish turned horizontal would be a better hydrofoil shape than essentially aluminum plate with some curvature to create the highest lift to drag ratio and have the added benefit of having much less propensity to stall even with high lift demands at slow speeds or through air bubbles or cold water or at the start of a jump.  This shape would have the classic round leading edge and considerable thickness just ahead of it's center and then trail back to very thin and sharp at the back edge.  For the highest lift to drag ratio, it would have more top curvature and less curvature yet not flat on the bottom like an airplane wing.  I would expect less drag for the lift and no glitches.  Has there been any work on this concept?

I have a suspicion that the suck down phenomena is more than just a classic stall because it seems quite energetic and seems to be an actual power dive akin to a submarine dive using it's fins.  I am thinking that just a stall would be a collapse of lift, but what I experience is being pulled down faster than just falling.  My theory is it parallels the aircraft Canard wing concept except it causes an unintended dive.  The Canard advantage is that this small front wing is deliberately designed to stall before the main wing thereby reducing lift in the front and dropping the nose and reducing the rate of climb to virtually make the airplane stall proof since that makes those corrections automatic which prevents the main wing from stalling.  It is a beautiful concept that has proven quite reliable.  Likewise, I make the comparison to our hydrofoils with a front and a rear blade.  Why do we have front and rear blades instead of just one central blade?  For balance each provides a share of the lift but, suppose the front blade were to stall before the rear blade.  Then there is lift at the rear and the front blade has no lift and the board and person tips forward and puts both blades into a power dive.  My theory is that this is the suck down phenomena.  This brings me back to my question on just a central blade instead of a front and rear blade.  I don't think there would be any difference in the difficulty of balancing on it.  I suspect that it would be identical.  I suspect that a front and rear blade gives the illusion of stability like a bicycle having two wheels compared to a unicycle, but I suspect that foilers are balancing more like on a unicycle than on a bicycle regardless of having the lift spread out with a front and rear blade.

Has anyone considered these design concepts?  Any posts on such things?  Any experimental work on this?  Has this been already done long ago when Air Chair was being developed and prototypes being tested?

If so, then I will read up on any referenced posts or replies and learn and build knowledge from there.  If not, then I might just design and fabricate a prototype blade.  It seems simple to make something with the same bolt pattern and just screw it on and test it.  It helps that I work in a fabrication shop where I routinely design and build things professionally and I can build almost anything that I can imagine though I have imagined my stainless steel sailboat which is out of my budget ;)  Since it will have thickness, I am thinking of making it mostly hollow and lightweight out of tungsten inert gas welded thin but strong stainless steel similar to the stainless strut fabrication that I saw in this post:

I might have to make that, too and perhaps even make it integral to the foil because it wouldn't be a t-bar to have one central blade instead of a front and rear.

I am going to fly the Air Chair again Sunday morning.  It inspires me to think about hydrofoil designs for my concept of a sailboat that I will build one day.  I especially liked that I flew the Air Chair above the waves and had a smooth ride when the water was rough.  The Air Chair to me is more than just super fun.  It allows me to feel and experience the dynamics of the hydrofoil to have greater insight into hydrofoil use for sailboats.  My interest in experimenting with hydrofoil design on the Air Chair is using the Air Chair as a test bed to better understand the dynamics of the hydrofoil and visualize the hydrofoil design and automated control that I will make for my future sailboat.

I also had a F37, B3H front (wingletless) and bat rear this spring in CT.  NO suckdowns at all. At same time we had a LE 38.  It experienced cold water suck downs on every ride. LE 38 had the BFlat (with wing tips) and bat rear.  Ride speed was 26-27 mph. Water was in 40s F.

Yes, I had the Foiltech setup this spring and it was a new experience for
me riding in cold water. Usually dealing with the cold water suck down on
top of all of the extra clothing is less than desirable... but better than
not riding at all.

I was able to ride without any suck down at all. You couldn't tell the
water was in the 30's...the foil rode just like it does in warmer water.
I'm sure we'll get more feed back on the different foils and wingletless
designs later this year.

When was the LE38 purchased / manufactured? 2005 or 2006? I think SS fixed
most of the "Suck Down" problem. When riding my LE 38 (after they had done
some work to the T-bar in Jan 06) in 38 - 52F, I had little or no suck-down.
That was at 27 MPH.

I had no suck down in water temp above 52F.
