It's been a while, but here's the recap from our meeting 10 days ago. For those who weren't there, it was very productive. It was great to hear lots of opinions on how we should run things. And even if we differ on specifics, I think we're all OK with agreeing to disagree. Let's keep up the chatter, even if it's critical (but still constructive). That goes a long way toward our new goal of openness.
In attendance: Andy, Shakey, Jaffe, Ian, Kristine, Rosi, Cricket. On her deathbed; Emily.
COMMUNICATION: Ben suggested using phone calls to spread info about meetings, practices, etc. E-mails only go so far, and some people never check em. Sounds like a good idea to me. Phone tree or no, we should devise a system to spread info about the team. During the summer, we might need to contact everyone about a practice location. This should be done in 20 minutes, not an hour.
WHO GETS TO PLAY? What about people taking trips for weeks at a time? What about college kids who express interest but will be out of town all summer? What if randos show up midway through the season (e.g. Ian, Elle, Shirtless Dave)?. What about Dave Hansen, who'll be on the North Rim much of the summer but clearly wants to play? What about Jack, who might be in Flag for a few weeks but in all likelihood will be playing for region rival Party Van? It helps to have rules on these situations, but we didn't arrive at a end-all-be-all Final Rule at this meeting. We'll have to take it on a case-by-case basis. Shakey and I will have to discuss this further, but here are some criteria:
1. Does this player plan on playing for HF in the Series?
2. Is this person committed to the HF, or just playing to "stay in shape" or get ready for the college season?
2. Is this person helping us improve as a team?
3. Is this person "smoking hot" or "have big boobs"? Ha just kidding. Sort of.
Let's all remember Shakey's Theory of Inclusiveness: We should always err on the side of inclusiveness, rather that exclusiveness. More input on this would be appreciated.
FLAGSTAFF LEAGUE: Jaffe has the info on this. It should run six weeks from late April to mid-June. It should be a wonderful way to segue from the college season into the club season. And a great way to recruit potential players, too. The plan is to hold one HF practice a week while league is going on. Shakey volunteered to help Jaffe run the league. Anyone else? There's a meeting Monday. Talk to Jaffe.
FLAGSTAFF TOURNAMENT: Jaffe said this will be the last weekend in June. Not sure it that is finalized. Once it's confirmed, we'll need volunteers to help things run smoothly. Shakey and I volunteered to help out, but we could use more help. Again, talk to Jaffe, and attend that meeting on Monday. Time, Ben?
UOMO DONNA: Is April 18-19 in Tucson. That's the weekend before College Regionals (April 25-26 in Denver), and likely the weekend after College Sectionals (date and location TBA, to my knowledge). This might take some coordinating with the college teams (Are the NAU teams going to Regionals? etc.) But we all agreed that it's a great way to introduce the idea of a mixed club team to some of the less-experienced players. This might be tricky, though. We definitely want to start looking at potential HF players. Assuming there's a lot of interest from college players, how do we deal with 30+ players? And what about players who definitely won't be in town or on Humpfreeze? We kicked around the ideas of: A) a really huge team, with emphasis on getting to know the newbies; and B) splitting into two teams to get more playing time. Either way, this is clearly a happy-go-fun-time tourney, so let's definitely NOT concern ourselves with pulling the best players and cutting the rest. Girls, we'd appreciate yall sending out some feelers to gauge interest in this tourney. We'll talk to the college guys as well.
SUMMER TOURNAMENTS: We all agreed that we should attend both Potlatch (July 3-5) and GRUB (July 18-19). This might be tough financially for some, and we can't reasonably expect the same 12-16 players at both tournaments. But I love the enthusiasm. From what I've seen and heard, Potlatch is more party-focused, while GRUB is more tourney-focused. In any case, start saving and planning to keep those weekends free. Other tournaments, and their assumed dates:
Green Chile Fest (March 7-8)
St. Pat's Hat (March 21-22)
One Love One Beach (April 11-12)
Daweena — open only (May 2-3)
Poultry Days (June 13-14)
Hats Hops & Hucks (July 18-19)
Wildwood (July 25-26)
Atomic Blast (July 25-26)
Ski Town Classic (Aug. 8-9)
Durango (Aug. 28-29)
Savage 7s (Sept. 5-6).
PRACTICES: League will take place on a weekday (I think), so we'll shoot for having once-a-week HF practices on Saturdays while league is going on. Once June hits, we'll go to two HF practices a week. Wednesday and Saturday sounded like the ideal option. The girls reminded us that they'll have practice on Tuesdays and Fridays come September. But we all to remind ourselves that come September, HF practices are crucial. That's why we've been playing all summer. If HF takes away from college practices, so be it. In September, HF is Priority No. 1.
JERSEYS: Again, Jaffe's the man. Cricket's gonna help with the design. Can't remember specifics (Are we getting a dark and a light? What about other accessories, like shorts?) We got friends in high places, that is to say in the jersey-producing industry, so we can theoretically get a damn good deal. Let's shoot to have these ready by July. For input, talk to Jaffe.
NEXT GET-TOGETHER: Let's go to the bowling alley or the pool hall or at the very least, hold a barbecue if the weather's nice. Let's also start working on recruiting. We've done enough brainstorming to last us a while, so let's start getting the word out. I'm talking about Jee, Flaimy, Kerry, Allie, Paula, Booboo, Shimoni, Mason, Johnny, Josh, etc. Let's do it before spring break: How about March 4th, 9th or 10th?
