Now trapped in the ivy on Wrigley's landscape,
These fragments will grow the entire season long,
When playoffs come, Cub fans will realize they were wrong,
Sorry, Chicago, to burst your bubble,
The curse may only end when your stadium is rubble,
On the other hand, Houston, get ready for a wonderful season!
All Star game, division title, and how about one more entertaining
reason,
A World Series title is very much in view,
Chicago wake up, get a clue,
No matter what you (the windy city) try to do,
Houston will win, Chicago will loose.


This light hearted poem has been written in good taste.  I look
forward to the race between all the National League Central teams.
The 2004 season should be fun and entertaining.  Go Astros!

Gates Open At 10 a.m. Saturday.

~ WELCOME to the Wintery "Field of Dreams Today" from snowy Virginia...The email that missed snow while living in Atlanta....We would get one early little snow or ice day in HotLanta and than it was spring...... ~ THIS DAY in 1959 ..Coast to Coast Jet service started in the United States...And thus the bad airline meal was born... ~ Today's Farmer's Alamanac calls fo Sunny and Fair....Now they get it right more than many think...But not today... ~ From The Front Office - Slogans..You have to have one...As you know we call this "America's Email"....With the quotes it simply says that someone - ME - has stated that fact...My baseball mentor Bob Neal taught me to have a slogan and theme every year...Catchy..Something people will remember...In 1978 we started "Pilots Power"...During selected innings the Public Address announcer - One of my many duties - would try to rally the fans when the home team needed to score..."OK FANS IT'S TIME FOR A LITTLE PILOTSSSSSSSSSSS POWERRRRR!!!..And than the charge tape was played...The slogan stuck for the next 10 seasons and believe it or not we did score more runs in those innings...Of course we never used it when we were 8 runs down and had no chance..But the fans did respond....So when I followed my mentor to Auburn,New York with the Houston Astros we were trying to come up with a theme...Bob and I had a house that actually overlooked the ballpark pitchers mound that the city let us use...One night about 2 am I just couldn't sleep..Thinking about a slogan...Than it came to me....I got up and started banging on Bob's door...."Bob..Bob..What county is Geneva(NY) in?" - our closest opponent - He looked at me like I was insane but informed me that it was not ours......Thus AUBURN ASTROS "Cayuga County's ONLY Professional Sports Team" was born...And caught on...We printed it on everything...The newspapers used it...The fans liked it..It did several things...It sounded bold..Even though Cayuga County was not a large county it made us sound Big League...It also included potential fans outside of just Auburn....And it gave the community a sense of pride...It stuck around even after I had left Auburn until they changed their nickname...We also used "The Team of the FingerLakes"......"Come watch the Stars Come Out"..."Come Catch the Rising Stars" and Falson Park -"Oldest Minor League Ballpark in America"..All were good..But the original proved to be the best....Our new baseball team is "Southside Virginia's FIRST Pro Sports Team of the 21st Century"...I like it...It's sad though that ad slogans are not working as well as they use to..I think companies don't stick with what works...NIKE still uses "Just Do It"....Coca Cola is still "The Real Thing"..But Delta..They used "We love to fly and it show" for years..Than they paid some ad agency millions for "We're on top of the World"...Huh....Stay with what brung you..And pound away at it...If it's good it will stick even now in the 21st Century...And that's my word as editor of "America's Emal".... ~ Today's Word..."Temerity"....Audacity.....Boldness....Over confident... ~ From JAY LENO HEADLINES..."Furniture drive for homeless launched".... ~ Today's Cool Site.. www.nasa.gov ....Great coverage of the Mars rovers.... ~ WELCOME back family member ED FERNANDEZ to our group today..Ed fixes all the computer problems at DHL/Airborne Express and helped me so much in my 10 years with the company..Welcome back buddy!!.... ~ We have a Big Birthday to celebrate this week...More later..... ~ Today's Sports Shot...OLIVER KIRK an Olympic Boxer from the USA won 2 gold medals in two different weight classes at the same Olympics.... ~ Today's Health Link...For people with Alzheimer's and their families www.alz.org .... ~ So it's over for Ben and JEN....Does anyone really care????...... ~ I soke with my buddy LORRAINE CRUMMER on Friday and she says hello..Yet another Airborn alumnus..Lorraine I know you will find a new job that will be better than you ever had at AIREX....Good Talking!!..... ~ It's Smowing..PULL THE TARPS....Kind Words can be short and easy to speak...But their echoes are truly endless...That's the Snowy Sunday "Field of Dreams Today"...The Road to a Friend's Home is Never Long...Be Safe...Be Brave...Be Americans...And Never Let Go..."Sic Semper Tyrannis"..Let's Roll!!

"America's Email"....THERE IS NO GREATNESS.....WHERE THERE IS NOT SIMPLCITY......GOODNESS...AND TRUTH.... ~ WELCOME to the Wednesday January 15, 2004 "Field of Dreams Today"...The email that never bets on baseball.... ~ THIS DAY in 1967 ...The First I Super Bowl Game was held...It was not officially called "The Super Bowl" in those days..Most thought it was going to be the NFL destroys the AFL...... ~ Good Call by the MIAMI DOLPHINS in bringing in DAN MARINO to run the football operations..... ~ THE WAT WE Were....At Peninsula we had a stadium built in 1947..And a scoreboard that should have been in a museum....On the surface it looked OK..We painted it every year and had a nice team logo on it..But it was outdated...Not made anymore - including parts....So what do you do when parts go bad...Well first you take the AT BAT parts and paint over that area...Than you take the light that shows what team was up to bat.....Now you are getting low on parts..So you take the extra 10th inning parts....So everything is working now right?? Yes..Until it rains..THAN the 2nd and 3rd inning just disappear....Lights Out....Until it drys up....From "Big League Dreams".... ~ I agree with HOWARD DEAN on somethng...Are you listening Cousin Dan???..He says that General Wesley Clark is a Republican...He's right until a year ago he openly supported President Bush and voted for the last 4 GOP nominees for President...But Bill and Hil encouraged him to enter the contest and he could not oppose a popular incumbent of his own party...... ~ TODAY'S NASA Moment......JUPITER has 16 moons which orbit around it..... ~ DID YOU KNOW That JIM DERRINGTON was the youngest player in the American League to get a hit...The Year was 1956....His age was 16.... ~ The following is the guest editorial piece I had published in "The Courier Record" yesterday...Thanks to our friend BILL COLEBURN.....So Here It Is......

Baseball legend Pete Rose came out with his new book "Prision without bars'' last week. After agreeing to a lifetime suspension from baseball more than a decade ago he now finally admits that he did indeed wager bets on baseball. He bet on the very team he was managing, the Cincinnati Reds. Rose says he only bet on his team to win and never from his stadium office but from his home. This admission comes after years of denial that he ever bet on baseball.

Why now? What makes his timing so special? One reason is probably because he needs the money and this book will sell alot of copies. But the main reason is probably because his normal eligiblity to Baseball's Hall of Fame runs out in 2 years.After that he would have to face the Veterans committee which is much more strick than the normal voting process. Since he must first be reinstated to baseball before he can be nominated to the Hall of Fame he is putting on the all out push to get back in. The question is should he?

There is no doubt that Pete Rose has the stats to be in the Hall of Fame. No player has accomplished so much with determination than Pete Rose. He was not a natural raw talent performer. He had to work for everything he did.I was with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1980 when the Phils won their one and only World Championship. We would have not done that without Pete Rose. I have met Pete Rose. He's a good guy. But does that excuse what he did? Does baseball give Rose a pass and still ban "Shoeless" Joe Jackson? Jackson was a member of the eight "Black Sox" - the name given the Chiacgo White Sox after the baseball betting scandal in 1919. Many of us think he had no or very little part of that scandal. He had an outstanding World Series and it does not appear he threw any game.Yet he was never reinstated or made a member of the Hall.

Baseball rule 21(D) "Betting on ballgames by any player,umpire,club or league official or employee who shall bet any sum whatsovever upon a baseball game which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared PERMANENTLY ineligible" This poster in large letters is in every dugout and locker room in pro baseball. From rookie league minor league baseball to major league baseball. I, like Rose, signed a form every season agreeing that we would never bet on baseball. Some ask why betting in baseball is such a big issue. The fact is that baseball was almost destroyed in 1919 when the Chicago White Sox had eight players that bet and threw the World Series. Had Commissioner Landis not stepped in and acted with the resolve that he did baseball may have died because the public would have never regained faith.And Baseball would have never regained it's integrity.

Pete Rose was betting on his team,the Reds, and managing them. While he may have bet on them to win he still could have made decisions that were based on his gambling. Changing of the lineup. Taking a pitcher out to early or leaving them in to long. Starting a player that is hurt that really should not be playing. All of these and more are possible and probably did factor in. This is totally unacceptable.As manager he had total control of these decisions.As a member of the baseball family these actions strongly offend me.

The American people are a forgiving group. If Pete had admitted his problem a decade ago and started to make ammends he perhaps would be back in baseball. Instead he blamed baseball. He blamed his former friends. He lied to the American public and his former teammates. He disgraced himself and hurt America's pastime.Also why not come out in a public setting and admit this instead of writing a book where he profits from the announcement? Perhaps he should have all the proceeds of the book go to a gambling addiction program. But this is not the case. Even if he does not get back into baseball he will still make money on the book.

I do believe that he has a sickness and that the gambling addiction is a disease. But even so he still must face the actions of that addiction and what he did. To this day he has not.

So should Pete Rose be allowed back into baseball - NO. Should Pete Rose be allowed in the Hall of Fame - NO. I am not saying ever but this is not the time. Rose needs to give back to all the people he lied to. He needs to realize the damage he did to the integrity of baseball. One day he may be ready to again be a part of the baseball family. But I am a part of the baseball family and for now I say no. And that's my Field of Dreams.

2004 Spring Training and Regular Season Schedules

During last evening's Christmas Eve Candlelight/Communion Service we sang "Joy to the World" for the first time this Christmas Season. And since last evening's service all the world seems to be singing "Joy to the World," and rightly so. Christmas is an uplifting celebration of God's grace and peace coming to live with humankind in His Son Jesus. ~ But as a pastor I am aware that Christmas can be painful if we're in the grip of grief or depression, there is little joy to be felt. This joyful season often brings with it painful memories, awareness of a loved one's death, a deep empty space. ~ James Montgomery knew those feelings. James's parents left him in a boy's school at the age 12 while they went as Moravian missionaries to the West Indies. He never saw them again. James suffered from depression and the pain of abandonment throughout his life. As a young man and a newspaper editor, he shared his parent's commitment to the poor and championed the 19th century movement against slavery. He was jailed twice. ~ In December of 1816, at age 45, he was once again in the grip of Christmas depression. He read and pondered the Christmas story in the second chapter of Luke's Gospel. He began deeply yearning for the good news in Bethlehem to come - to the West Indies, to him in England, to all the world. He put pen to paper and wrote, Angels, from the realms of Glory, Wing your flight o'er all the earth. ~ He continued to write. His final verse, not in most hymnals, is a poignant claiming of God's mercy for himself and all those in anguish: Sinners moved by true repentance, Doomed for guilt to endless pains, Justice now revokes the sentence! Mercy calls you, break your chains. Come and worship, Worship Christ, the newborn King. ~ Out of James Montgomery's hurting heart has come one of our most popular Christmas Carols. In the words of another great hymn, Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal." ~ Dear brothers and sisters, today we celebrate how God's mercy came to us powerfully at Bethlehem. John's "Field of Dreams Today" December 23rd "Merry Christmas Email" was truly inspiring. I appreciate how John leaves no doubt in our minds as to what he cherishes in life and what he has been waiting to receive this Christmas. ~ A great deal of our Christmas preparation is spent in waiting. We've all had to wait and we really don't like it and certainly don't appreciate being told to wait. None the less we all, especially the people of God, find ourselves waiting whether we like it or not. And what we are waiting for and fully expecting is Jesus to come any minute now to do something for us we cannot do for ourselves. ~ What are you waiting for this Christmas? We have been taught in Sunday School or by our parents to say, "We are waiting for Jesus" all the while knowing in our hearts Jesus has already come. Sometimes we play out the Christmas Story as if it never happened. Maybe that is why we are so stressed out in our waiting. We want to experience the baby Jesus once more. But the reality is God's Son, the Christ, is already here seeking entrance into the hearts and lives of an obedient people. ~ Maybe what we really need to be waiting for this Christmas are sign's of God's Kingdom in our midst. Christ awakening a new sense of ethics within us, a new sense of selflessness, lifting us out of self-pity, and causing us to care for others more than ourselves. What we are really waiting for this Christmas is new life, a new vision of what life can be like for us in the Christ who has already come. ~ We aren't the only ones waiting. There's someone else waiting, too. It's God. What do you suppose God is waiting for this Christmas? ~ Theologian Helmut Thielicke, has renamed the parable of the prodigal son. He calls it "The Parable of the Waiting Father". The waiting father's steadfast love never gives up on us. He is patiently waiting at home for us wise men and women to wise up, and the shepherd in all of us to wake up, not just to a baby in a manger but to who Jesus really is. ~ The waiting father, who do you suppose he's waiting for this Christmas? ~ I pray in this season called Holy that both you and the waiting father will receive your heart's desire. ~ Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift in Jesus Christ our Lord!

Saddam Hussein terriorized and killed millions of his own people for 4 decades...He tortured virtually at least one member of every Iraq citizen....He stole billions of dollars from his people as they starved....He raped and took as he pleased...He showed his true colors today as he surrendered as a coward in a hole...The United States and our partners have given a great gift to the people of Iraq and the World....We know the hostilities are not over - But we also know that Hussein WILL NEVER rule Iraq or scare another innoncent person or Country again...This moment would not be upon us today had some had had their way in not only the world but this Country...President Bush made a decision that the safety of our country depended on this..He also decided that turning a blind eye on Tyrannts would stop. The World and the United States are tonight a safer place to live...GOOD does WIN over EVIL and those like Saddam have to pay the price....This is one of those days that you will always remember....Just like Pear Harbor....And VJ Day and VE Day...And the Day we landed on the moon....It will be forever part of our lives...Certainly tough times lay ahead..But on this day we can all stand proud that our fantastic Country and military made this day possible...And we can celebrate freedom..... ~ OK So what does Howard Dean run on now??? HMMM...... ~ AT The Movies..."Master and Commander"....Got great reviews...Was good but not great..2 baseballs..... ~ So Dallas shutouts the Redskins for the first time since 1971...Steve Spurrier your days are numbered at Redskins Park...... ~ WE REMEMBER and pray for the families of the men and woman of the US military and the coalition that lost their family members...You are true HEROES!!..... ~ HEY SADDAM..Nice new doo...NOT...Lice and all.... ~ Rounding Third...Let Freedom Ring.....That's the Sunday "Field"...Hope you have a great weekend...Be Safe...Be Proud.....Celebrate being AMERICANS....."Sic Semper Tyrannis"...Let's Roll!!

"The USA's Christmas Email"......THE FRAGRANCE OF WHAT WE GIVE AWAY....STAYS WITH US... ~ WELCOME to the Thursday "Field of Dreams" ...The Email that goes where no man has gone before - ie: "Star Trek"..... ~ "Rose" from "Titanic" is doing her Christmas shopping...What do you get for a guy that has been on the bottom of the North Atlantic for almost 100 years....I know..I plaque that says "I will never let go Jack"......~ WOW the DOW finished above 10,000 for the first time since 2002....Yes we will NEVER forget September 11,2001..But we picked ourselves up and kept this great Country working and growing...We are indeed a blessed nation!!.... ~ I spoke with our assoc editor and good buddy DAN TAUKEN today...Dan great talking with you buddy!!... ~ So we will only give contracts for rebuilding Iraq to countries that are part of the coalition......DAH.....What else do we do..These folks risked their people and shed blood just like us...What other decision could we make??...~ Cousin DAN I agree on that integrity thing...So we agree..YIKES!!.... ~ TODAY'S Christmas tip....For Live trees use water and sugar of course..But also add several ice cubes several times a week..It will help keep the tree fresh..... ~ PULL THE TARPS....It is Not the present you get at Christmas - The Gift is the person who gave it to you..... "America's Email".....HOLIDAY SPIRIT IS ALL AROUND NOW THAT WE ARE IN DECEMBER.....LET US KEEP THIS IN OUR HEART ALL YEAR...NOT JUST FOR ONE MONTH..... ~ WELCOME to the Tuesday "Field of Dreams"....The daily ezine that says what it means...and does what it says.... ~ I spoke with my dear friend STEPHANIE MATTHEWS today in Seattle....As always great chatting Stepphie!!!....Also I heard from my good buddie Anthony Hallmark Esquire - Attorney and fellow Airborne alumnus..... ~ The Way We Were...1978 Winston-Salem, North Carolina...The Peninsula Pilots were in town playing the Winston- Salem Red Sox.....We - The defending Carolina League Champs - were staying at a Best Western..I was sitting at the pool with Field manager JIM SYNDER having a nice chat...And all of a sudden a very large country man came up to us screaming at us "Where is my daughter?".....Well she was a "groupie" and had met one of our players.....I got the signal from Jim to go resolve the problem while I ran from room to room to fix the situation....Sure enough one of our players - a future major leaguer - was "entertaining" the young lady....We quickly got her out of the back of the hotel and was never heard from again...Well until the next trip we made there....From "Big League Dreams"...... ~ MOVIE REVIEW...."Scary Movie 3" Bad....Stupid.....Worthless...0 baseballs out of 4...Don't waste your money folks.... ~ OK I am still missing some addresses for some of you for Christmas cards....So please email me at John@... ...I don't want to miss anyone......Give me your birthday also so I can print it here on your big day...Thanks!!....~ Speaking of Christmas cards I almost sent "Red" a card - YIKES...But I could not think of one nice thing to say to him.....I guess I could have resorted to his ways and lied.....But I just went to the next address..... ~ ONLY 22 shoping Days Left to Christmas,,,, ~ PULL THE TARPS.....People in Glass Houses...Have High heat bills.....That's the Tuesday "Field"...Be Safe...Be Brave...Be Americans...Until tommorow...Sic Semper Tyrannis...Let's Roll!!
