ARIZONA 4, PHILADELPHIA 3 (11)

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Matt Williams has regained his run-producing
stroke.

"He was the bus driver," Arizona's Luis Gonzalez shouted as
Williams, who drove in three runs, walked to his locker Monday
night after the Diamondbacks beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3
in 11 innings.

"It's all right. I've been sitting in the back seat all year,"
Williams said.

Arizona remained one game behind San Francisco in the NL West.
The Giants beat the New York Mets 11-1.

"We check the scoreboard now that we're not in first place," said
Randy Johnson, who allowed two runs -- one earned -- and five
hits in six innings. "When you're in first place, you don't check
it because you control your destiny."

Johnson had 10 of Arizona's 16 strikeouts but walked four. He is
winless in five starts.

Arizona took the lead for good when Jay Bell led off the 11th
with a double off Jeff Brantley (1-7), took third on a groundout
by Gonzalez and scored on Williams' single.

Dan Plesac (2-0) pitched a perfect 10th, and Matt Mantei got his
10th save in 12 chances with a perfect 11th.

"Matt (Williams) has really started to swing the bat well in the
last week for us," Arizona manager Buck Showalter said. "He means
so much to us, in the field, just his presence."

Williams, who missed the first 43 games with a fractured bone in
his foot, is 14-for-40 (.350) in his last nine games.

"The last couple games, I've been doing my job better," Williams
said. "I haven't been doing it consistently."

Doug Glanville tied the game at 3-3 with a homer leading off the
seventh on the first pitch thrown by reliever Russ Springer.

Ed Vosberg and Vicente Padilla combined for four shutout innings
in relief. Vosberg didn't allow a hit in 2 2/3 innings. Padilla,
acquired from Philadelphia in the Curt Schilling deal, allowed
one hit in 1 1/3 innings.

After walking Glanville leading off the first, Johnson struck out
six consecutive batters. He also struck out the side in the
fourth.

"It was good to get him out of the game," Phillies manager Terry
Francona said. "We just didn't do the job against the other
pitchers."

BALTIMORE 8, CHICAGO 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - He leads all Baltimore Orioles pitchers with
eight wins, is the only starter with a winning record and is
unbeaten in six starts since July 8.

Jose Mercedes, who started the season in the minor leagues, is
pitching better than Mike Mussina and everyone else in the
Orioles' starting rotation. Mercedes allowed one run in eight
innings to win his fifth straight decision, and Jerry Hairston
and Luis Matos homered as the Orioles defeated the Chicago White
Sox 8-2 Monday night.

Mercedes (8-4) allowed seven hits, struck out five and walked
three against the team that leads the majors in runs. It was the
fifth time in six starts that the right-hander has pitched at
least seven innings, and Baltimore has won all six of those
games.

"When you're feeling good, everything goes good," Mercedes said.
"Everything was working -- my changeup, fastball and slider. I
guess all the hard work has paid off."

Hairston's leadoff homer sparked a four-run first inning against
Mike Sirotka (10-10), and Matos' first major league home run, a
three-run shot, made it 7-0 in the third.

Magglio Ordonez had three hits and an RBI for the White Sox, who
own the best record in the AL (70-48) but are only 15-15 since
the All-Star break. After the game, manager Jerry Manuel held a
closed-door meeting. The White Sox made two errors, were sloppy
in the field and appeared sluggish in losing for the sixth time
in 11 games.

"We talked about the lack of intensity that I think we need to
get back. We seem somewhat lacking," Ordonez said. "I'd just like
to see it be somewhat comparable to where we are."

Sirotka (10-10) gave up four earned runs, eight hits and five
walks in 3 2/3 innings. He's yielded 21 homers this year compared
to 24 all last season. But Chicago would have been hard-pressed
to win even if Sirotka was much sharper.

"The Orioles jumped on him right away, but we still need to hit
the ball and play good defense behind him," Manuel said.

Mercedes' gem was a stark contrast from his last appearance
against the White Sox on April 27, he allowed four runs in 1 2/3
innings.

"There was definitely something different from the last time we
saw him," said Chicago's Paul Konerko, who went 0-for-4. "He was
throwing harder and he was more over the top. He was throwing
real hard and that can make those off-speed pitches even better.
He was more deceiving."

HOUSTON 16, PITTSBURGH 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Chris Holt remembered what it was like to get hit
in the face with a line drive, and it might have made him a
better pitcher Monday night.

Holt didn't allow a hit for six innings and finished with a
five-hitter as the Houston Astros routed the Pittsburgh Pirates
16-2. Holt pitched for the first time since Aug. 4, when
Montreal's Peter Bergeron hit a line drive off his cheek. Holt
missed one start because of a black eye and facial swelling.

"I was a little timid at first," said Holt, whose left eye is
still black and filled with blood in the lower right corner. "It
was good that I had a couple of hits back at me.

"It definitely made a difference for me pitching. Now I
definitely am anticipating them hitting it back at me more. I
used to fall off to the side more after I threw, and now I'm
staying in the middle more. I think that helped my pitching."

Holt, who had lost 6-of-7 decisions since July 14, pitched his
third complete game of the season, striking out five and walking
four. He was helped by double plays in the second and third
innings after a hit batter and a walk.

"Holt did a great job," manager Larry Dierker said. "To be able
to go out there after what happened in his last start and having
10 days off, was something you wouldn't think he'd be a candidate
to go all the way after all that."

The Pirates were equally impressed with Holt, who has a 1.11 ERA
in seven career appearances against them.

"Holt had real good stuff," manager Gene Lamont said. "Against us
he always has good stuff it seems. And at times, it seems against
us he has shown he can be a powerful pitcher."

Brian Giles broke up the no-hit bid when he led off the seventh
with a ball that went off the glove of shortstop Tim Bogar behind
second. Second baseman Julio Lugo then picked up the ball and
threw to first, but it wasn't in time and Bogar hit his glove in
disgust.

Moises Alou had two home runs for the second straight game as
Houston, which has scored 30 runs in its last two games, had 19
hits for the second straight day. Tony Eusebio and Bogar each
went 4-for-5, both tying their career highs for hits.

Jose Silva (7-7) lost his third straight decision, giving up nine
runs, nine hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings. Pittsburgh has
lost 6-of-8 and 10-of-13.

Pittsburgh got its runs in the ninth on Enrique Wilson's
sacrifice fly and Alex Ramirez's run-scoring single.

NEW YORK 7, TEXAS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Andy Pettitte keeps taking advantage of
the offensive support he's getting from the New York Yankees.

Pettitte pitched seven strong innings before tiring in the
eighth, getting his fifth straight win as the New York Yankees
continued their dominance over Texas with a 7-3 victory Monday
night. New York has averaged 7.4 runs in Pettitte's 23 starts.

Pettitte (14-6) allowed just four hits while shutting out Texas
the first seven innings, but the Rangers started the eighth with
three straight singles, the third by Chad Curtis driving home a
run. Pettitte was pulled after he hit Rusty Greer to load the
bases with no outs.

"The guys scored runs for me and I got in a good rhythm," said
Pettitte, whose 14 wins matched Texas' Rick Helling for
second-most in the AL. "I felt in so much control, then there are
a couple of groundballs that get through and a blooper over
shortstop. All of a sudden it's tense."

But not too tense for the Yankees, who have won nine straight
against the Rangers, including all six this season and a
three-game sweep in the first round of last year's playoffs. New
York has won 39-of-49 between the teams since the opening game of
the 1996 playoffs.

Jorge Posada and Derek Jeter both hit long two-run homers for the
Yankees.

Despite the shaky ending, Pettitte has allowed just 10 earned
runs over the 35 2/3 innings he has pitched during his five-game
winning streak. He struck out three and walked one.

"He was terrific. He's done a nice, quiet job of really settling
this pitching staff," manager Joe Torre said. "He's in a zone
right know. He knows what to do."

New York led 2-0 after just two batters were up. Jeter was hit on
the leg by a pitch and Posada followed with his 22nd homer of the
season, a 424-foot blast to left.

"I've been working all week throwing the slider into right-handed
hitters. It was a good pitch and I didn't think he could do
anything with it," said Matt Perisho, who lost his fifth straight
decision.

Jeter, who had a leadoff double in the fifth, hit a 412-foot
homer to left-center when the Yankees scored three runs in the
sixth. Tino Martinez led off the inning with a double and scored
on Scott Brosius' single before Jeter's 11th homer of the season.
Brosius added an RBI double in the eighth.

Perisho (2-5), 0-5 in 10 starts since a win June 17 at Tampa Bay,
struck out eight in six innings. He allowed eight hits and walked
three.
