For Barry Bonds, the awards and records continue to pile up. Bonds won his second straight MVP award for an unprecendented fifth time. Bonds was chosen unanimously over the Cardinals' Albert Pujols. Bonds, 38, finished the season with a Major League-leading .370 average to become the oldest first-time batting champion in MLB history. AL MVP for Tejada
Miguel Tejada
New Face: Tejada
There was no shortage of material to support naming Oakland A's shortstop Miguel Tejada as the American League Most Valuable Player. Tejada set career highs in batting average (.308), hits (204), RBIs (131), home runs (34), total bases (.336), runs (108) on-base percentage (.354), fielding percentage (.975) and slugging percentage (.508). He hit .325 with 19 homers in the season's second half -- including a dramatic homer off All-Star Eddie Guardado to beat the Twins on Sept. 1, extending Oakland's winning streak to 18 games on the way to an AL-record 20 -- as the A's stormed to the AL West title. And the winner is ... Baseball's West Wing. Miguel Tejada's coronation as AL MVP dropped the curtain on MLB's awards season, over a week-long buffet of honors that confirmed the Major League's 2002 playing field tilted toward the Left Coast. With the Athletics' shortstop joining his Bay Area neighbor, unanimous NL MVP Barry Bonds of the Giants, six of this season's top eight awards have been bestowed on West Division luminaries. Only NL Manager of the Year Tony La Russa, of the Central Division Cardinals, and AL Rookie of the Year Eric Hinske, of the East Division Blue Jays, were able to crack the West stronghold.
