PHILLIES SIGN TERRY ADAMS

The Phillies have come to terms with free agent starting pitcher
Terry Adams on a three-year contract with a total value, including
incentive bonuses, of $19.5 million, Phillies Vice President and
General Manager Ed Wade announced today.

Adams’ contract with the Phillies carries one guaranteed season with
options for 2003 and 2004 that Adams can vest through performance.

In 2002, Adams will receive a base salary of $2,700,000 that, with
bonuses, can increase to $4,800,000.  The 2003 season carries a
base salary of $5,400,000 that could increase to $6,600,000, and
the 2004 base salary is $7,500,000 that could escalate to $8,100,000.

The 28-year-old spent last season with Los Angeles as both a starter
and reliever.  He appeared in 43 games - 22 starts - and finished the
season 12-8 with a 4.33 ERA, reaching career highs in wins, innings
(166.1) and strikeouts (141).

Before the 2001 season, Adams had never started a game in the major
leagues.  He made 363 relief appearances in the big leagues before
his first career start, June 5 at Arizona.  Pitching in the rotation,
Adams was 10-6 with a 4.16 ERA.  In his final five starts of the season,
he posted a 3.12 ERA and pitched a career-high eight innings in
two of those starts.

Originally selected by the Cubs in the fourth round of the June, 1991
draft, Adams has a career record of 37-43 with a 4.04 ERA in 385
games in his seven-year major league career with Chicago and
Los Angeles.

To make room for Adams on the 40-man roster, the Phillies have
designated LHP Thomas Jacquez for assignment.
