Which player is the leading contender at the All-Star break for the NL MVP award?

Sports - Houston Astros vs. San Diego Padres - 07/14/2001

SAN DIEGO 8, HOUSTON 6

HOUSTON (AP) - San Diego manager Bruce Bochy was shocked when Damian Jackson hit a broken-bat grand slam.

Jackson's sixth-inning shot helped the Padres rally from three runs down to beat the Houston Astros 8-6 Saturday night. Jackson's home run was only his second of the season and the 18th of his three-year major league career.

"That doesn't happen very often. I saw Larry Walker hit one and I saw (Ryan) Klesko hit one, but not with the bat shattered like that," Bochy said. "I was shocked. I didn't know he had that kind of power, but he hit it in the right spot down the line."

"Home runs aren't my thing. I concentrate on average and using the whole field," Jackson said. "I hit that one right on the barrel. I knew I hit it good but I never dreamed it would go out. It didn't vibrate or anything. It felt good."

Jackson believes that the bat may have been cracked in an earlier at-bat and he didn't notice it. The bat broke in half, with the barrel landing near third base. The grand slam barely cleared the fence down the left field line, near the 315-foot sign in hitter-friendly Enron Park.

"What are you going to do. They built it and we play here. That's the way it goes," Houston's Lance Berkman said. "It was weird, but sometimes you hit the ball right and the bat breaks, 315 is not very far away."

Losing pitcher Wade Miller (11-4) wasn't thinking of a home run when he saw the barrel of the bat fly past him.

"I didn't think he hit it that good when I saw the bat fly by. That pretty much tells you about left field here, a broken bat grand slam," Miller said.

Mark Kotsay continued to hit well against the Astros, going 2-for-5 with a two-run homer. He's 18-for-38 (.471) against Houston this season.

Kevin Jarvis (6-7) went five innings and won his third straight decision despite giving up five runs on seven hits. He struck out two and walked four. Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his 20th save in 22 opportunities.

Miller lost for the first time at home this season. He went six innings and allowed all eight runs on six hits while striking out five. It was Miller's first loss in his last seven outings, which include four wins and two no-decisions.

Berkman hit a two-run homer, his 26th of the season, to make it 3-0 in the third. Phil Nevin's 23rd home run, a solo shot, put the Padres on the board in the fourth, and Kotsay's seventh homer tied the game at 3 in the fifth. The Padres went ahead on D'Angelo Jimenez's RBI single to right in the sixth. Jarvis then walked for the second time, loading the bases, before Jackson hit his grand slam with two outs.
