HOUSTON 11, SAN DIEGO 3
HOUSTON (AP) - Roy Oswalt knew he wasn't sharp and needed some
help from his offense. He got plenty.
Jeff Bagwell and Vinny Castilla each hit two of Houston's five
home runs and Oswalt won his sixth straight decision as the
Astros beat the San Diego Padres 11-3 Friday night. Oswalt (8-1)
is 6-0 since moving into the starting rotation and the Astros are
7-0 in the rookie right-hander's starts.
"Actually today, I battled with my control, I wasn't hitting my
spots, but I had good results," Oswalt said. "A lot of times,
(catcher Brad Ausmus) would set up inside and I'd go outside.
"But every day you go out there, and they get runs for you and
play defense, you have confidence."
He allowed six hits over seven innings but tied his career high
with eight strikeouts.
All of the Astros' homers came off Woody Williams (6-7), who set
a franchise record for homers allowed in a game and has now
served up an NL-high 27.
Castilla drove in five runs and Bagwell four. Bagwell, who
homered for the fourth straight game, hit a two-run shot in the
first and a solo homer in the fifth to raise his season total to
24 homers. He also hit an RBI single in the sixth to help the
Astros beat San Diego at Enron Field for the first time in eight
games.
"I know I'm not going to stay on this kind of spurt, but what's
happened in the past is I'll hit consistently for two months or
more," Bagwell said. "I'm happy the way things are going now. I
just want to keep it going."
Castilla hit a two-run homer in the second and a solo shot in the
sixth, giving him nine on the season. Castilla added a two-run
double in the seventh inning.
"I felt great the last couple of weeks, I'm seeing the ball
better," Castilla said. "I'm starting to feel like the way it was
before."
Ausmus hit a solo homer in the fourth inning for Houston.
Williams, who left after Castilla's second homer, allowed 11
hits, seven earned runs and struck out two over five-plus
innings.
"They had a good game plan," Williams said. "You've got to tip
your hat to them. Other than two pitches I threw the ball right
where I wanted. It's one of those things I can't explain."
Phil Nevin hit a two-run homer for San Diego in the sixth inning,
and pinch-hitter Dave Magadan hit a solo shot in the eighth.
Tony Gwynn played an inning of defense for the first time since
May 9, going into right field for the sixth. He singled in the
seventh and left the game for a pinch runner. Gwynn is 4-for-6
since coming off the disabled list July 3.
