*** Boston ace probably headed to DL for 3rd year in a row

BOSTON (AP) - Even after beating Tampa Bay for the 11th straight
time, the Boston Red Sox were in no mood to celebrate -- Pedro
Martinez is hurting once again. Red Sox manager Jimy Williams
said Martinez is likely headed for the disabled list for the
third straight year. He was pulled from Tuesday night's 7-6 win
over the Devil Rays after allowing four runs in less than five
innings. "We haven't done it yet officially, but there's a pretty
good chance," Williams said. Williams said Martinez will undergo
tests Wednesday for pain in his right shoulder. The three-time Cy
Young winner wasn't available for comment. Martinez has been
sidelined at midseason each of the last three years. Pitching
coach Joe Kerrigan said he was frustrated because the Red Sox
tried to pace Martinez specifically to avoid another breakdown.
"We did everything in our power to keep this from happening
again," he said.

*** Braves return to old bait and tackle to reel in Phillies

(AP) - The Atlanta Braves are nearly back on top in the NL East.
They've rallied using a very familiar formula -- strong pitching.
John Burkett worked eight innings, and the bullpen finished off
first-place Philadelphia with three scoreless frames as Atlanta
won its fifth straight game, beating the Phillies 4-1 Tuesday
night. The second-place Braves pulled within a half-game of the
slumping Phillies. The Braves are 15-8 in June and have gained 7
1/2 games on Philadelphia during the span. The Phillies are 8-14
since June 1. "To close the gap this fast, it just shows you how
good this club is playing right now," said Rico Brogna, a former
Phillie who hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the 11th inning.
"We've been getting great pitching. That's always been the case
with Atlanta." Burkett allowed one run and three hits, lowering
his NL-best ERA to 2.35. He struck out seven and walked one.

EXTRA BASES

There's another team in the NL East mix. Brad Penny threw one-hit
ball for eight innings, striking out a team-record 13 as Florida
beat Montreal 3-0. Penny, who also had a pair of hits and scored
a run, retired the first 10 batters. Penny broke the Marlins'
regular-season record of 12 strikeouts set by Bobby Witt in 1995.
Livan Hernandez struck out 15 for Florida in the 1997 NL playoffs
against Atlanta. Florida is 2 1/2 games behind the Phillies. In
other NL action, Alex Ochoa led off the game with a homer, then
scored the go-ahead run on a ninth-inning throwing error by
reliever Gene Stechschulte as Cincinnati beat St. Louis 10-9. Ken
Griffey Jr. homered for the Reds. Jon Lieber won for the sixth
time in seven starts, allowing two runs in 7 1/2 innings as the
Chicago Cubs beat the New York Mets 4-2, and Houston hit five
homers to win its fourth straight, 10-7 over Arizona.

In the AL, Brent Mayne, a stranger in the ballpark he called home
for six years, didn't waste any time reintroducing himself. Mayne
went 3-for-4 and tied a career high with four RBIs in his return
to Kauffman Stadium, helping Kansas City beat Detroit 12-5. "It's
not deja vu at all. Everything's different," said Mayne, who was
the Royals' first-round draft pick in 1989 and caught for the
Royals from 1990-95. Mayne was acquired from Colorado on Sunday.
Denny Hocking came on as a pinch-hitter and delivered a two-out,
two-run triple to cap a four-run rally in the ninth and lift
Minnesota to a 7-6 win over the Chicago White Sox. The Twins
improved to 7-0 against Chicago this season. Mike Cameron broke
open a close game with a three-run homer in the sixth as Seattle
beat Oakland 7-3, and Texas scored seven runs on six hits, an
error and a sac fly in the 11th to beat Anaheim 8-1.

*** Batista takes oh-fer in first appearance against Blue Jays

TORONTO (AP) - Tony Batista was back at SkyDome on Tuesday night
for the first time since the Toronto Blue Jays waived him, and he
harbored no ill feelings toward his former team. "I'm just glad
they gave me a chance to play, so thanks Toronto," said Batista,
who was claimed on waivers by the Baltimore Orioles on Monday.
"Baltimore is giving me a new chance." Batista, an AL All-Star
last season, started at third base for the Orioles on Tuesday
night and batted seventh. Cal Ripken Jr., who played third
Monday, was not in the starting lineup. "What are we going to
talk about?" Batista asked reporters before the game. "It was a
difficult situation." Batista went 0-for-3 in a 3-1 Baltimore
loss. He grounded into an inning-ending double play in the
seventh. Batista, 27, had a breakthrough season last year when he
hit 41 home runs and had 114 RBIs. This season, he was batting
just .207 with 13 home runs and 45 RBIs when he was waived.

*** Rocker gets save in return to Yankee Stadium

NEW YORK (AP) - New uniform, same old John Rocker. In his first
game in New York with his new team, Rocker pitched a perfect
ninth inning, got a save, then cursed at reporters after the
Cleveland Indians rallied to beat the Yankees 5-3 Tuesday night.
Rocker, acquired by Cleveland from Atlanta on Friday, relieved to
start the ninth. The controversial closer, who bashed New
Yorkers, immigrants, homosexuals and others two years ago,
followed right-hander Bob Wickman's perfect eighth and was booed
loudly for a full 10 seconds even before he sprinted out of the
left-field bullpen, like a bull charging into a ring. He
efficiently got his second AL save in 13 pitches. Rocker, who has
retired all six batters he's faced for Cleveland, striking out
four, didn't want to discuss the game. "Sorry guys, I've got
important stuff to do," he said, then muttered a curse toward the
media as he walked away from his stall.

*** Bucs manager ejected for stealing first

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon was
ejected from Tuesday night's game against Milwaukee for violating
one of baseball's cardinal rules -- trying to steal first base.
McClendon, angered when Jason Kendall was called out at first on
a grounder into the hole at short in the seventh inning, yanked
first base from its moorings and carried it into the dugout in
protest. "I told him (First base umpire Rick Reed) he wasn't
using it, so I thought I'd take it," said McClendon. After
McClendon handed his lineup card to bench coach Bill Virdon and
whipped the base down the dugout runway, Reed signaled to the
ground crew to bring in a replacement bag so the game could
continue. The Pirates went on to win 7-6 in 12 innings as their
leader sat in the clubhouse. The ejection was the second this
season for McClendon, the Pirates' rookie manager. It was
McClendon's first stolen base since 1992.

*** Florie ready to return -- will it be with Red Sox?

BOSTON (AP) - Bryce Florie insists he's ready to return to the
majors, more than nine months after the Boston reliever was hit
in the face by a line drive. But his comeback may not happen with
the Red Sox. The Red Sox offered Florie a 19-day rehabilitation
assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday. The pitcher,
however, said he'd probably reject the stint. "It's something I
think would be a great thing, to come back here and pitch in
Boston," Florie added. "It doesn't look like it's going to
happen." Florie has been undergoing rehabilitation since being
hit in the right eye Sept. 8 by a liner from Ryan Thompson of the
New York Yankees. Florie had surgery to repair broken facial
bones and got contact lenses to correct his vision, which was
impaired after the injury. Earlier Tuesday, Florie was cleared to
play by doctors. He learned of the team's decision in a meeting
with manager Jimy Williams and assistant general manger Mike
Port.

*** Nuxhall standing by criticism of Larkin

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Cincinnati Reds broadcaster Joe Nuxhall, who
criticized the play of shortstop Barry Larkin last weekend, stood
by his words on Tuesday. During Saturday's game at Houston,
Nuxhall had this reaction when Larkin couldn't throw out the
Astros' Julio Lugo, who got an infield hit: "The first pitch is
swung on and it's bounced to Larkin. He fields, throws and ... I
hate to say it, Barry is losing it, folks. It hurts to say that,
but Barry Larkin makes that play anytime. Not anymore." On
Monday, before the Reds played the St. Louis Cardinals, Nuxhall
wasn't backing down. "It's just what I saw," Nuxhall said. "I
know I was critical, but it's my opinion." Larkin, 37, signed a
three-year, $27 million contract extension last year. He has been
slowed by a strained right groin, returning to the lineup on June
15. "I am not the player that I was before I incurred my injury,"
Larkin said.

*** Ankiel strikes out 14, walks none in minor league outing

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) - Rick Ankiel, trying to regain his
major league form, struck out 14 and walked none in six innings
Tuesday night for the Johnson City Cardinals of the Appalachian
League. Ankiel, the wild left-hander who was sent down by the St.
Louis Cardinals, allowed only two hits. He left with a two-run
lead, but Johnson City lost 3-2 to Princeton. "I felt like I had
good gas tonight," Ankiel said. "I threw the ball well and
executed my pitches." Ankiel, 21, was plagued with wildness in
last year's playoffs, and the problem carried over to this
season. Many of his pitches sailed to the backstop, forcing the
Cardinals to send him to the minors. He didn't throw any wild
pitches Tuesday in his second straight solid outing for Johnson
City. Before being demoted, Ankiel was 1-2 with a 7.13 ERA in six
starts for St. Louis. Last year as a rookie, Ankiel was 11-7 with
194 strikeouts and a team-best 3.50 ERA.

*** Payton returns to Mets

CHICAGO (AP) - Jay Payton is a self-described "nut" about his
hitting, so much so he wrote down every little thing he was doing
at the plate before he got hurt. Now that he's back, he's hoping
to pick up right where he left off before going on the disabled
list May 8 with a strained right hamstring. "Before I got hurt, I
was swinging the bat as well as I've ever swung it, so I just
tried to revert back," said Payton, who rejoined the Mets on
Tuesday and played center field against the Chicago Cubs. He went
1-for-4 in the Mets' 4-2 loss. "I jotted down just about
everything I was doing, just so I'd have it down on paper," he
said. "I went back to that, tried to do everything I was doing
before." Payton was hitting .315 with three homers and 12 RBIs
when he got hurt. Payton didn't seem to lose anything with the
time off, hitting .375 with seven runs scored and three doubles
in four rehab games at Single-A St. Lucie.

*** Blue Jays disable Bush

TORONTO (AP) - The Toronto Blue Jays placed second baseman Homer
Bush on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained right
hamstring. Bush, who won't return until after the All-Star break,
injured the hamstring while running to first in Monday's game.
"It's probably going to be seven to 10 days, but I want to error
on the side of safety," Toronto manager Buck Martinez said. Bush
hit .372 in 34 games. He missed 36 games earlier this season with
ligament damage in his left thumb. "He's had a horrible first
half of the season with injuries. He was playing so well. It's a
big loss for our team," Martinez said. Losing Bush comes at a bad
time for the Blue Jays, who lost third baseman Tony Batista on
waivers to the Baltimore Orioles on Monday. Jeff Frye, who
entered Tuesday's game hitting .192, is supposed to platoon with
Chris Woodward at third, but he'll play second. Woodward, batting
.191., will play third.

*** Cordero activated by Indians, Riske optioned

NEW YORK (AP) - Wil Cordero was activated from the disabled list
on Tuesday by the Cleveland Indians, who optioned right-hander
David Riske to Triple-A Buffalo. Cordero was placed on the DL
with an injured left hand last Wednesday, a move retroactive to
June 11. He is hitting .314 this season with three homers and 13
RBIs in 121 at-bats. Cleveland manager Charlie Manuel said
Cordero would be on the bench for now. "I'll let him do some
hitting, especially when we get back home," Manuel said Tuesday
before a 5-3 win against the Yankees in which Cordero didn't
play. Riske, recalled from Buffalo on June 22, pitched 2 2/3
scoreless innings Monday. Manuel was impressed by Riske. "He's
going to be a good big league pitcher," Manuel said. Reliever
Paul Shuey, on the DL with a strained right elbow, will start a
rehabilitation assignment in Double-A Wednesday. Manuel said
Shuey, who got hurt while swinging a bat, could be activated as
early as Friday.

*** Expos recall right-hander Thurman

MIAMI (AP) - The Montreal Expos activated pitcher Mike Thurman
from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday and sent him to the
mound in a start against the Florida Marlins. Thurman (3-5), who
took the loss in the Marlins' 3-0 win, allowed seven hits and two
runs over five innings. He had two strikeouts and walked one.
Thurman, who was injured May 23, missed 30 games with a hairline
fracture to his right thumb. The injury occurred when he was hit
by a pitch thrown by New York's Al Leiter. The right-hander was
recalled from his injury rehabilitation assignment with Single-A
Jupiter. Montreal made room on the roster Monday by optioning
left-hander Matt Blank to Triple-A Ottawa.

*** Cubs recall Brown, option Zuleta to Triple-A

CHICAGO (AP) - Roosevelt Brown's bat has earned him another stint
with the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs recalled the outfielder from
Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday morning and optioned infielder Julio
Zuleta. Brown was in the Cubs lineup against New York, about 12
hours after finishing a 12-inning game in Iowa. He went 1-for-4
with a double as the Cubs topped the Mets 4-2. "I got home at 1
a.m. and was up about 6 a.m.," Brown said. "So it was kind of
rough, but it's the life we lead." Brown was hitting .341 with 13
homers and 48 RBIs at Iowa. He also was named to the Triple-A
All-Star team. Brown was on the Cubs' Opening Day roster, but was
sent down April 25 after going 1-for-9 in eight games. He's hit
.287 with four homers and 24 RBIs in 86 games with the Cubs the
past three years. Told to work on his defense in Iowa, Brown said
he showed up early for extra work every day. Primarily a left
fielder, he also got some work in center.

*** Garces on DL, Kim called up by Red Sox

BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Red Sox placed reliever Rich Garces on
the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a pulled right hamstring,
and called up Sun Woo Kim from Triple-A Pawtucket. Garces allowed
two home runs in one inning in Monday's 12-8 win over the Tampa
Bay Devil Rays. Manager Jimy Williams said Garces' hamstring had
been bothering him for several days. Garces is 3-0 with a 3.03
ERA in 31 games this year. He has 28 strikeouts in 35 2/3
innings. Kim was 4-5 with a 5.74 ERA in 13 games for Pawtucket.

*** Oakland calls up Myers; places Valdez on DL

SEATTLE (AP) - The Oakland Athletics called up catcher Greg Myers
from Triple-A Sacramento of the Pacific Coast League on Tuesday,
and placed first baseman-outfielder Mario Valdez on the 60-day
disabled list with a broken bone in his right hand. Valdez, 26,
broke his hand while swinging a bat in the clubhouse in Oakland
before a game with Texas. He will sidelined for the rest of the
season. Valdez played 32 games with the A's, hitting .278 with
one home run and eight RBIs. Myers, 35, was signed to a minor
league contract by the A's on Sunday after being released by
Baltimore on June 14. He hit .270 with four home runs and 18 RBIs
in 25 games with the Orioles. In a pinch-hitter's role Tuesday
night, he walked for Ramon Hernandez in Oakland's 7-3 loss to
Seattle. Myers has played for six teams in his major league
career and is a .254 career hitter with 59 homers and 308 RBIs in
875 games.

*** Rangers sell Sikorski's contract to Japan

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers sold the contract of
right-hander Brian Sikorski to the Chiba Lotte Marines of the
Japanese Pacific League on Tuesday for an undisclosed sum.
Sikorski, who spent this season with Triple-A Oklahoma of the
Pacific Coast League, will join Chiba Lotte later this week. The
26-year-old Sikorski went 6-4 with a 3.61 ERA in 14 starts at
Oklahoma this season before going on the disabled list with a
bruised right forearm on June 15.

*** Puckett, Branca, Thomson honorary All-Star captains

NEW YORK (AP) - Hall of Fame newcomer Kirby Puckett, along with
Bobby Thomson and Ralph Branca, will serve as honorary captains
for the All-Star Game at Safeco Field next month. Puckett will be
on the AL side. The former Minnesota outfielder was elected to
the Hall last January and will be inducted at Cooperstown, N.Y.,
on Aug. 5. Puckett played in 10 straight All-Star Games and was
MVP of the 1993 event in Baltimore. Thomson and Branca will be NL
co-captains for the game July 10 in Seattle. This season marks
the 50th anniversary of "The Shot Heard 'Round the World," the
playoff home run Thomson hit off Branca to lift the New York
Giants over the Brooklyn Dodgers for the 1951 NL pennant. Branca
and Thomson both were three-time NL All-Stars.

*** In Barry's shadow, Kent regains MVP form

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Barry Bonds looms so large these days that
opponents seem to have forgotten about the hitter standing right
behind him -- even though he's the NL MVP.

Concealed in the wake of Bonds' record-setting home run binge,
Jeff Kent is back in top form. The Giants, with both of their
superstars in full stride, won 9-of-13 games to establish their
presence in the playoff race.

After a slow early season due to impatience and position
shuffles, Kent went on a 13-game hitting streak, and entered
Tuesday night's game hitting .436 (17-for-39) in his last 11
games with two homers and 10 RBIs.

Yet opponents still would rather face Kent than Bonds, whose 39
homers have taken the spotlight away from Kent again.

"I'm glad to be forgotten," Kent said. "I've always been in
Barry's shadow. Barry has always been recognized as the San
Francisco Giant. That doesn't bother me at all.

"What bothers me is that San Francisco doesn't have a World
Series championship. Hopefully, we can all, along with Barry,
achieve that."

Kent went 4-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs on Monday night,
providing practically all of the offense as the Giants overcame a
late flight back from St. Louis and a strong performance by Chan
Ho Park to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-2.

1917 - Catcher Hank Gowdy of the Braves became the first player
to enter military service in World War I.

1939 - The Brooklyn Dodgers and the Boston Braves played a
23-inning, 2-2 tie. Whit Wyatt pitched the first 16 innings for
the Dodgers. Both clubs played a 26-inning tie in 1920 at the
same Braves Field.

1958 - Billy Pierce of the White Sox retired 26 straight
Washington batters before pinch-hitter Ed Fitzgerald doubled just
inside the right-field line for the only hit. Pierce then struck
out Albie Pearson on three pitches and beat the Senators 3-0.

1973 - David Clyde, a $125,000, 18-year-old bonus baby with the
Rangers, pitched five innings, struck out eight and allowed one
hit in his first major league start. Texas beat Minnesota 4-3
before 35,698 fans -- the Rangers' first home sellout at
Arlington Stadium.

1980 - Jerry Reuss of the Dodgers pitched a no-hitter against San
Francisco in an 8-0 victory at Candlestick Park. The only player
to reach base was Jack Clark in the first inning on a throwing
error by shortstop Bill Russell.

1986 - San Francisco rookie Robby Thompson set a major league
record when he was caught stealing four times in the Giants' 7-6,
12-inning victory over Cincinnati. Catcher Bo Diaz threw out
Thompson in the fourth, sixth, ninth and 11th innings.

1993 - Anthony Young of the New York Mets set a major league
record by losing his 24th straight decision, 5-3 to the St. Louis
Cardinals.

1999 - Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 27th homer and robbed Juan
Gonzalez of a three-run shot with an over-the-fence catch as the
Seattle Mariners beat Texas 5-2 in the final game at the
Kingdome.
