CLEVELAND 9, CHICAGO 3
CLEVELAND (AP) - Roberto Alomar swears he's been hitting line
drives all season. It's just that in September, no one's been
catching them.
Alomar went 4-for-5 with three doubles and three RBIs and Dave
Burba was his usual self Saturday, leading the Cleveland Indians
to a 9-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox.
After battling nagging injuries most of the season, Alomar is
healthy and it shows. He's batting .417 this month, and in his
last 18 games he's hitting .381 with four homers and 17 RBIs.
"All I can do is hit it and hope it's not at somebody," said
Alomar, who has raised his average to .290. "That's what's
happening right now."
Cleveland snapped a four-game losing streak at home against
first-place Chicago, which still leads the AL Central by 7 1/2
games. But while the Indians may be too late to catch the White
Sox, they opened a three-game lead over Boston -- 5-3 losers to
New York -- in the AL wild card race.
The Indians also got some bad news. Left fielder Wil Cordero
fractured his right pinky when he was hit with a pitch from Kevin
Beirne in the third, and could be out for the season.
"That's a big loss," Alomar said. "He's been getting a lot of big
hits for us."
Burba (14-6), who began having trouble breathing while warming up
before the game in the humid conditions, allowed two runs and six
hits in 5 2/3 innings to win for the fourth time in five starts.
The right-hander wasn't overpowering, but he kept the White Sox
off balance and pitched at least five innings for the 27th time
in 28 starts.
"I couldn't catch my breath," Burba said, "and I started cramping
up in the fourth inning. But the bottom line is that I battled
through it and gave us a chance to win."
Cleveland's bullpen held the White Sox to one hit over the final
3 1/3 innings.
Russell Branyan added a two-run homer and David Segui went
3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Indians, who roughed up Chicago
rookie starter Jon Garland (3-6).
"I got behind guys and I wasn't able to throw strike," Garland
said. "I don't know if it was my mechanics or what it was. The
last couple of outings been high with my fastball can't get it in
the zone. You leave it over the plate and it just makes them
better hitters."
Frank Thomas drove in two runs for the White Sox, who made two
errors and blew some scoring chances.

HOUSTON 14, CHICAGO 4
CHICAGO (AP) - Eight-year-old T.J. Bogar picked the perfect day
to watch his dad play.
With his son serving as the Houston bat boy, Tim Bogar hit two
home runs Saturday. Richard Hidalgo and Lance Berkman also
connected twice, part of a team-record seven homers that powered
the Astros over the Chicago Cubs 14-4.
Bogar, who makes his offseason home in Normal, Ill., and had
about 25 friends and family members in attendance, hit a two-run
homer in the first and a three-run shot in the fourth.
Bogar's five RBIs were a career high. He matched a personal best
with four hits.
"It was nice to do that with my son here," said Bogar. "We played
catch and I let him experience Wrigley Field the way he should."
It's the 14th time in ML history a team has had three players hit
two home runs each in a game, most recently accomplished April 21
when Anaheim did it at Tampa Bay.
"When every fourth guy comes up and hits a home run, it makes it
easier," Houston manager Larry Dierker said.
Daryle Ward added a solo shot for the Astros, who lead the NL
with 220 home runs. Houston had posted four six-homer games this
year.
"It was beautiful," Hidalgo said. "Everyone was swinging at good
pitches. If you swing at good pitches, you'll hit it good."
It was only the fifth time in Cubs history they have served up
seven in a game, and first since July 12, 1996, against St.
Louis.
"We give up seven home runs a day when the wind's blowing out,"
Cubs manager Don Baylor said, over-exaggerating the totals. "If
you can't pitch in this ballpark (when the wind's blowing out),
that's the kind of game you'll have."
Sammy Sosa raised his NL-leading RBI total to 130 with a single.
But Chicago lost for the eighth time in nine games and was
mathematically eliminated in the NL Central.
Chris Holt (7-14) allowed four runs and nine hits in 6 2/3
innings, pitching despite slight back spasms that started when he
was warming up.
Ruben Quevedo (2-8) lst his third straight game. He was tagged
for nie runs on 10 hits -- including four homers -- in 3 2/3
innings.
Julio Lugo singled to lead off the Astros first and Bogar
followed a home run. Hidalgo's homer made it 4-0 in the third.

NEW YORK 5, BOSTON 3
BOSTON (AP) - Pedro Martinez has finally met his match. His name
is Andy Pettitte.
For the second time in three months, Pettitte beat baseball's ERA
leader and two-time Cy Young award winner in Fenway Park,
pitching the New York Yankees to a 5-3 win over the Boston Red
Sox on Saturday.
"It's nice to beat Boston," Pettitte said. "It doesn't matter
who's pitching for the other team. That's really a non-issue."
But Pettitte (18-7) had to be sharp, knowing the Yankees weren't
likely to score much against Martinez (16-5), who entered the
game with a 1.66 ERA. Helped by Scott Brosius' three-run homer in
the seventh, Pettitte left after eight innings with a 3-1 lead.
"Andy is really the story," Brosius said. "I know he's got to be
thinking coming in he's got to pitch real well. To shut them down
and keep us in the game was a key."
Jose Canseco's two-run homer off Tim Wakefield in the ninth --
his 14th of the season and 445th of his career -- gave New York a
necessary cushion when Boston scored two in the bottom of the
inning off Mariano Rivera on a double by Dante Bichette, a triple
by Troy O'Leary and a double by Jason Varitek.
On June 20, Pettitte pitched 7 2/3 innings in a 3-0 win over
Boston when homers hurt Martinez again. He allowed solo shots to
Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams and Paul O'Neill. On Saturday,
Martinez left after seven innings and 119 pitches, his ERA rising
to 1.74.
"The last time he pitched good against me, too," Martinez said
after Boston dropped its second straight game of the series.
"Roger Clemens, who pitched yesterday (is) one of the best in the
game, and Andy Pettitte's right there. You can't expect a lot" of
offense.
Pettitte didn't give the Red Sox much. The only run he allowed
came in the third on a single by Jose Offerman and a double by
Carl Everett. Pettitte struck out six and allowed one walk and
six hits.
Pettitte improved to 9-1 in his last 10 starts one day after
Clemens went to 8-0 in the past three months with a 4-0
victory.Boston managed 14 hits in the two games and fell eight
games
behind first-place New York in the AL East and three behind
Cleveland in the wild-card race.
In four games against New York this season, Martinez is 1-2 and
has allowed seven runs, six scoring on homers. Pettitte is 2-0
against Boston, allowing one run in 15 2/3 innings.
On Saturday, Martinez's pitch count was getting high, reaching 93
through six innings, when Tino Martinez led off the seventh with
a single. Pedro Martinez retired the next two batters, then went
to consecutive 3-2 counts for the first time in the game.
Jorge Posada, who struck out in his first two at-bats, walked.
Brosius homered over the left-field wall on a 3-2 pitch.

PHILADELPHIA 6, NEW YORK 3
NEW YORK (AP) - The only thing the New York Mets are hitting hard
right now is their equipment.
A night after Mike Hampton took on the water cooler, Turk Wendell
took out his frustration on his glove, throwing it into the
stands in disgust as the Mets lost meekly again, 6-3 to the
Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.
"How many rows deep did it go in?" Wendell (7-5) asked. "Make the
X Games on that one. It was definitely my longest toss."
Robert Person (8-5) and five relievers combined on a six-hitter,
sending New York to its 15th loss in 17 September games dating to
last year.
New York, which seemed a lock for the playoffs 10 days ago, is
1-7 this September and saw its wild card lead cut to 3 1/2 games
over Arizona.
"It comes to be a pride thing," said Mike Piazza, one the Mets
whose average is dropping along with the temperature. "It's
embarrassing and it's frustrating. You can't win every game. If
you lose, you lose with dignity, but you want to feel you're out
there doing your job. Obviously, we're not."
Todd Zeile, celebrating his 35th birthday, was part of the
meltdown, drawing a line in the dirt with his bat for plate
umpire Travis Katzenmeier, who called him out on strikes in the
seventh.
Edgardo Alfonzo, with just eight errors coming in, helped the
Phillies by missing a pair of grounders in the seventh -- one
ruled a hit, the other an error. The crowd of 42,324 turned on
New York, booing the sloppy display.
"We've just got to battle out of this," Mets manager Bobby
Valentine said. "We have to pull some magic. I'm supposed to find
a way out of it."
Since pounding the Diamondbacks' Randy Johnson on Aug. 25, the
Mets' bats seem to be infected with a team-wide virus: They have
just 34 runs in 13 games and are hitting .198 (81-for-409).
Philadelphia came to New York with the worst record in the major
leagues, losers of eight straight, scoring 16 runs in the skid.
But the Mets scored just three runs in the first two games of the
series, reminiscentof the 1998 slide that caused them to miss
the playoffs and the one last year that nearly cost them a
postseason spot.
Person improved to 3-0 against the Mets in his career, allowing
one run and three hits in six innings.
"We're in a position to do some damage to potential playoffs
teams, just like last year," he said.
