CHICAGO 5, CLEVELAND 4
CLEVELAND (AP) - On a night when every pitch felt like the
postseason, the Chicago White Sox seemed ready for October.
Paul Konerko made a diving stop at first with the bases loaded in
the seventh inning and hit a two-run homer Friday night as
Chicago moved a game closer to wrapping up the AL Central with a
5-4 victory over the Indians.
"We've done it all year," Konerko said. "We keep getting tested
and we keep coming through."
In beating the Indians for the fourth straight time at Jacobs
Field, the White Sox increased their lead to 8 1/2 games over
second-place Cleveland. Chicago is 29 games over .500 for the
first time since the end of the 1983 season.
"This was another big step for us," said Konerko, one of the
young White Sox who have never played in the postseason. "It was
like the playoffs, a packed house pulling against us, and we were
able to come out with another win. We're moving closer to a
division title. This couldn't be a better start toward doing it."
Rookie Mark Buehrle (4-1) pitched 1 2/3 innings for the win, and
Bob Howry got out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh with
Konerko's help as the White Sox improved to 8-3 against Cleveland
this year. Keith Foulke pitched the ninth for his 29th save in 34
chances.
While many of the White Sox dressed afterward, starter James
Baldwin sat in his chair rubbing his right shoulder. Baldwin was
chased in the fifth inning and said he still bothered by
discomfort in his shoulder.
"I don't know what it is," said Baldwin, who missed two starts
last month with a tired arm. "That's not an excuse for me to give
up runs, I would never do that. But I'm not 100 percent right
now. Hopefully, they'll find out what it going on."
Manny Ramirez had three RBIs for the Indians, who remained two
games ahead of the Boston Red Sox in the AL wild-card race.
Cleveland might as well forget about winning the division it has
dominated since 1995, because it doesn't look like the White Sox
are going away.
"They scored those fve runs early and we just couldn't get the
big hit to get over the top," Indians manager Charlie Manuel
said. "We had chances, too."
Jose Valentin homered for Chicago, which has led the division
since April 19.
Indians starter Steve Woodard (1-3) failed to get beyond the
fourth inning for the fourth time in his last five starts,
allowing five runs and seven hits in four innings.

HOUSTON 13, CHICAGO 10
CHICAGO (AP) - Houston manager Larry Dierker didn't expect to
need his closer once the Astros opened an 11-run lead.
No one expected the seventh-inning strip, either.
Sammy Sosa hit his major league-leading 47th home run but the
Astros hung on to beat the Chicago Cubs 13-10 Friday behind solo
homers by Roger Cedeno and Raul Chavez.
"It wasn't a very enjoyable win," Dierker said. "Most of the
time, you don't care how you do it if you just win. Today, we
couldn't throw enough strikes in whatever the zone was."
Sosa hit a three-run homer in the seventh off Jose Cabrera, one
batter after a man ran on the field, stripped and stood on the
pitching mound, making an obscene gesture. The players stood and
watched in amusement while the crowd of 34,439 buzzed. Wrigley
Field organist Gary Pressy played "What Kind of Fool Am I?" as
the man, still naked, was escorted off the field through the
stands by security guards.
"He came in and asked the umpire for time out," said Sosa who was
standing on deck. "It was unbelievable."
"It's unfortunate that happened with kids in the stands," Cubs
manager Don Baylor said. "I was not amused. But at least he
wasn't a rally killer."
Cedeno led off a five-run fourth with his sixth homer, a drive
off Kevin Tapani (8-12), who has allowed a career-high 35 this
season.
Chavez hit his first major league home run in the sixth off Steve
Rain. Chris Truby drove in three runs, Mitch Meluskey drove in
two and Julio Lugo had a career-high five hits for the Astros,
who won their fourth straight.
Wade Miller (5-5) won his third straight start, giving up five
runs. five hits and four walks over 5 1/3 innings. Backed by an
11-0 lead, he was chased after giving up three home runs in the
sixth -- a leadoff drive by Ricky Gutierrez, a three-homer by
Damon Buford and a solo homer by Willie Greene.
"There's no way you should be bringing in your closer after being
up by that many," Houston's Jeff Bagwell said.
"We only had one hit in the first five innigs and then we come
back -- that's a good sign," Sosa said. "A lot of people would
give up. We went up there and we were fighting."
Tapani, who lost his third straight decision, gave up seven runs
and 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings. Chicago has lost seven of its last
eight games.

NEW YORK 4, BOSTON 0
BOSTON (AP) - It's been three months since Roger Clemens' last
loss, and he just keeps getting stronger.
Clemens pitched five-hit ball for eight innings, and David
Justice and Derek Jeter drove in two runs each as the New York
Yankees increased their AL East lead over Boston to seven games
with a 4-0 win over the Red Sox on Friday night.
"I'm throwing the way I want to and the way I know I can,"
Clemens said. "I'm healthy and I've got my legs back under me."
The game wound down on a scary note when Boston pitcher Bryce
Florie was hit in the ninth by a liner off the bat of Ryan
Thompson. The ball appeared to hit Florie below the right eye,
and he was taken off the field on a cart with blood streaming
down. Florie was rushed to a local hospital, and team spokesman
Kevin Shea said a report wasn't expected before Saturday.
"I've never seen that, something like that, up close," said Lou
Merloni, who picked up the ball and threw out Thompson at first.
"To hear the sound I heard from third base, it wasn't a good
feeling."
Clemens (12-6) struck out seven, walked two and is 8-0 since
spending 16 days on the disabled list with a strained groin. In
his last three games, he's allowed just one run and 13 hits in 23
innings.
"The last six starts, we've seen the fire in his eyes," New York
manager Joe Torre said of the former Red Sox ace. "It was
apparent he was very determined when he came to the park today."
Dante Bichette, who returned to the AL on Aug. 31 for the first
time since 1992, recognized Clemens as the pitcher who won three
straight ERA titles in Bichette's three full seasons in the AL.
"You put the ball in play off him. That's all you can hope to
do," said Bichette, who went 2-for-4 Friday and is 9-for-20 in
his career against Clemens. "He's everything I remember him
being."
Mariano Rivera pitched a perfect ninth. During the season,
Clemens has left six games with leads his bullpen wasted.
Boston starter Tomo Ohka (3-4) allowed two runs on five hits in 6
13 innings as Boston remained two games behind Cleveland in the
wild-card race.
"The first run, he made a good pitch and the ball fell in for
Justice," Boston catcher Jason Varitek said. "The second run, he
made a mistake by leaving a splitter high."
With one out in the fourth, Jeter was hit by a pitch and took
second when Jose Offerman booted Paul O'Neill's grounder to
second for an error. Jeter advanced on Tino Martinez's flyout and
scored on Justice's single. Justice led off the seventh with his
37th homer of the year, his 16th with the Yankees. Jeter finished
the scoring with a two-run single in the ninth off Florie.

PHILADELPHIA 2, NEW YORK 0
NEW YORK (AP) - Mike Hampton's dugout temper tantrum was the most
visible sign of frustration around the New York Mets. Yet he's
not the only one on edge as the team goes through yet another
September swoon.
Scott Rolen's two-run homer in the eighth inning set Hampton off
as the Philadelphia Phillies snapped an eight-game skid and sent
the Mets deeper into their funk with a 2-0 win Friday night.
"It's frustrating," New York's Todd Zeile said. "You can tell by
our team demeanor. Mike pitched a great game and one unfortunate
pitch beat him. If you get no support, all it takes is one pitch
to beat you."
New York has lost 6-of-7 this month, dredging up memories of
late-season folds the past two seasons, and has fallen behind 3
1/2 games Atlanta in the NL East race. The Mets still lead
Arizona by 4 1/2 games for the wild card. Even a return home and
a matchup with the worst team in the majors couldn't help the
Mets. Bruce Chen and four relievers shut down New York's
struggling offense, and Philadelphia finally broke through
against Hampton with two outs in the eighth.
Hampton (13-9) walked Doug Glanville on a 3-2 pitch before
running the count full to Rolen, who hit a shot into the
left-field bleachers for his 23rd homer.
A disgusted Hampton left the game after walking Pat Burrell. He
threw his glove against the dugout wall, slapped a towel against
the bench and punched the water cooler with his right hand.
"That's just me," said Hampton, who allowed four hits in 7 2/3
innings. "I don't try to please anyone. I show emotion sometimes.
This was one of those cases."
Chen matched zeros with a top starter for the second straight
start. After getting a no-decision in Philadelphia's 1-0,
10-inning loss to Kevin Brown and Los Angeles last Saturday, Chen
pitched 6 1/3 shutout innings to run his scoreless streak to 20
2/3 innings.
"He's pitching great," manager Terry Francona said. "I think he's
a smart enough pitcher to know that if he keeps pitching like
that the wins ae going to come."
Chen allowed eight hits and one walk and pitched out of trouble a
few times, including getting Derek Bell to fly out with runners
on second and third to end the fifth. Chen left with runners on
first and second in the seventh, but Vicente Padilla (4-5) got
Benny Agbayani and Bell to ground out to end the threat.
Jeff Brantley came on with two on and two outs in the eighth and
got Jay Payton to pop out. Brantley finished for his 22nd save in
26 chances.
