CHICAGO 13, TEXAS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Look out, Cleveland. The Chicago White Sox's
high-powered offense is in high gear. Frank Thomas hit his
AL-leading 41st home run, and the Chicago White Sox spoiled Scott
Sheldon's adventure at all nine positions with a 13-1 romp over
the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night.

Charles Johnson, Greg Norton and Magglio Ordonez also homered for
the AL Central-leading White Sox. Chicago scored seven runs in
the first inning, sending Rick Helling (14-11) to the shortest
start of his career.

"We had to get going early," said Thomas, who tied his career
high in homers. "We'd love to win the division, but Cleveland's
not backing down. It should be an interesting weekend this
weekend."

The only bright spot for the Rangers -- or maybe it was comic
relief -- came from Sheldon, who became just the third player
ever to play all nine spots in one game. He joined Bert
Campaneris (Sept. 8, 1965) and Cesar Tovar (Sept. 22, 1968) as
true utility players.

Sheldon, who plays mostly shortstop and third base, entered the
game in the fourth inning at catcher. By the eighth, he was
pitching and he struck out the only batter he faced, Jeff Liefer.

"I had a blast," said Sheldon, who played eight positions in a
spring training game. "It went by so fast, but there are so many
memories I'll take from this."

The White Sox aren't worried as much about memories as they are
about victories in these last few weeks. With their division lead
down to 6 1/2 games, the White Sox head to Cleveland this weekend
for a series with the second-place Indians.

While his teammates were knocking in runs, Kip Wells (5-7) kept
the Rangers in check with one of his best games ever.

Making his first start since being recalled from Triple-A
Charlotte, Wells gave up one unearned run and four hits in seven
innings. He struck out four and walked only one.

Mike Lamb drove in Texas' run with grounder in the third.

After Helling walked Jose Valentin in the first inning, Thomas
homered to left. He also hit 1 homers in 1993, the year he won
his first MVP award.

The smoke from the fireworks hadn't even cleared when Ordonez
homered, giving the White Sox a 3-0 lead. Chicago then loaded the
bases with a single by Carlos Lee and walks to Paul Konerko and
Norton, and Chris Singleton hit a two-run single.

After Johnson lined out, Ray Durham hit a two-run single to
center, giving the White Sox a 7-0 run and chasing Helling.

Helling gave up a whopping seven runs -- two of them homers -- in
just 2/3 of an inning. He gave up five hits, walked three and
threw 41 pitches.

HOUSTON 13, FLORIDA 5

HOUSTON (AP) - Chris Truby is making his case to start at third
base for the Houston Astros next season.

"He's done nothing to make us think he can't do it," manager
Larry Dierker said Wednesday night after Truby went 3-for-5 with
a two-run homer and a triple in a 13-5 rout of the Florida
Marlins.

"But," Dierker said, "this is a game that until you establish
yourself for two or three years, you always withhold your
judgment on whether a guy has made it. But he certainly looks
good right now."

Truby has been up from the minors since Ken Caminiti had wrist
surgery June 16. Truby is hitting .272 with eight homers and 38
RBIs.

"In the beginning, I was hitting a lot of line drives and I knew
I wasn't going to stay up here doing that," he said. "But I have
been able to add some power lately and that should help."

The Marlins were managed by third-base coach Fredi Gonzalez
because manager John Boles went to Chicago to be with his ailing
father.

Jesus Sanchez (8-10) was knocked out in the fifth when the Astros
got seven runs on five hits, including three straight doubles.

"I think he got behind on the count then," Gonzalez said of
Sanchez. "Then he tried to challenge those guys. He was pretty
good until then. They hit some rockets."

Jose Lima (7-15) allowed five runs and seven hits in eight
innings, striking out six and improving to 6-2 in 12 starts since
July 9. But he gave up homers to Preston Wilson and pinch-hitter
Chris Clapinski. Lima has allowed 42 homers, four short of Robin
Roberts' NL record, set in 1956, and eight short of the major
league record Bert Blyleven set with Minnesota in 1986.

Truby put Houston ahead with an RBI triple in the first but
Derrek Lee's run-scoring single tied it in the fourth. Moises
Alou's 27th homer again gave Houston the lead in the bottom half,
but Wilson's 25th homer, a three-run drive, gave Florida a 4-2
lead in the fifth. Houston took a 6-4 lead in the big bottom half
when Julio Lugo and Jeff Bagwell hit consecutive two-ru doubles.
Richard Hidalgo followed with an RBI double that chased Sanchez,
and Truby hit a two-run homer off Manny Aybar that made it 9-4.

Hidalgo added a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Clapinski hit his
first major league homer in the seventh. Houston added three runs
in the eighth off Brad Looper in the eighth and Bagwell's second
double, Hidalgo's sacrifice fly and Alou's RBI groundout.

KANSAS CITY 3, NEW YORK 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The New York Yankees gave Mariano Rivera
the night off and it cost them.

Carlos Febles doubled home the tying run off Mike Stanton and
scored on Johnny Damon's fourth single of the night as the Kansas
City Royals rallied in the ninth inning to beat the Yankees 3-2
Wednesday night.

Yankees manager Joe Torre said "nothing's wrong" with Rivera.

"We just wanted to give him the extra day off," Torre said. "He's
been working hard."

Rivera, who has converted 32 of 37 save chances, has been less
effective than usual lately. Left-handed hitters, who frequently
watch their bats break on his inside pitches, have been able to
bloop balls over the infield.

Stanton (2-3) has been completely ineffective, incurring the
wrath of New York owner George Steinbrenner. Stanton has blown
his last four save chances, this time costing the Yankees a
chance to increase their AL East lead to a season-high seven
games over second-place Boston.

"It can't get a whole lot worse," Stanton said. "Joe shows
confidence in putting me out in the ninth inning, and I can't
come through. I failed. There's no excuse. It just can't keep
going like this."

With the Yankees leading 2-1 and one out in the ninth,
pinch-hitter Dave McCarty singled. Pinch-runner Luis Ordaz scored
on Febles' double, and Damon followed with the game-winning
single to center. Damon said the Royals didn't take Torre's
decision to send out Stanton as a lack of respect for them.

"Rivera probably just needed the night off, and he deserves it,"
Damon said. "He's the best closer in baseball. They've got a
comfortable enough lead over Boston. Stanton would be the 'A' guy
on a lot of teams."

Brian Meadows (4-2) pitched his second complete game of the
season for the Royals. He gave up nine hits, struck out three and
walked one.

Chuck Knoblauch returned to the Yankees lineup and went 0-for-4
in his first game since going on the disabled list Aug. 3 with
tendinitis in his right elbow. The second baseman was
misake-free recording two assists in a solid performance.

New York's Orlando Hernandez pitched shutout ball into the eighth
inning, helping himself by starting two double plays. The blown
save by Stanton denied El Duque his fifth straight win.

SAN FRANCISCO 5, PHILADELPHIA 4

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Ellis Burks and Aaron Fultz are adding to
the list of heroes in the San Francisco Giants' clubhouse.

Burks hit an infield single in the eighth inning and the Giants
defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 Wednesday night for their
eighth straight win.

Fultz (4-2) pitched two scoreless innings as the Giants took a
season-high 7 1/2-game lead in the NL West and matched their
longest winning string of the year.

"We're getting a different hero every time," said Burks. "That's
the sign of a good team. This is the time of the year you want to
be in there and making the most of it."

Philadelphia lost its eighth in a row.

Vicente Padilla (3-5) walked the bases loaded and Burks hit a
ball into the hole. Third baseman Scott Rolen fielded the ball,
but had no chance to get an out as Marvin Benard came home with
the go-ahead run.

"They just don't make mistakes and they take advantage of your
mistakes," said Philadelphia starter Randy Wolf. "They're a darn
good team. We just couldn't get anything going."

Fultz struck out a career-high five for the victory. Alan Embree
recorded the final two outs for his second save.

"We depend on everybody here and they've responded," said Giants
manager Dusty Baker. "Fultzie was the most rested guy and Embree
has been throwing the ball great. We were trying to stay away
from (closer Robb) Nen."

Calvin Murray set the tone in the first when he robbed Pat
Burrell of extra bases with two runners on with a running,
over-the-shoulder catch at the warning track in center field to
end the inning.

"That was one heck of a play, one of the best I've seen all
year," said Phillies manager Terry Francona.

Murray said he felt like he had a chance at it the whole time
despite playing shallow.

"I just had to get back there and throw my glove up," he said.
"Everybody gets attention for their offense, but it's nice to
save runs too. That's part of winning."

The Giants took a 4-0 lead in the first against Wolf. Murray was
hit by apitch and eventually scored on a single by Barry Bonds.
With two outs, Burks singled and Russ Davis followed with his
eighth homer of the season, a three-run shot over the left-field
fence.
