CHICAGO 13, ANAHEIM 12

CHICAGO (AP) - After beating Anaheim ace reliever Shigetoshi
Hasegawa once this weekend, the Chicago White Sox were confident
they could do it again.

Frank Thomas hit his 40th homer and drove in four runs as the
White Sox needed to rally late against Hasegawa despite scoring
nine runs in the first inning of a 13-12 win over the Angels
Sunday.

"When you've gone through the bullpen in the first game, then it
feels comfortable when you do it again in the third game of the
series," Chicago manager Jerry Manuel said after the team's fifth
straight win. "We have some guys who are very clutch performers."

Chicago led 9-4 after one before coming back from a 12-11 deficit
in the eighth against Hasegawa (8-5). Carlos Lee doubled with one
out and scored on Herbert Perry's triple to tie the game. Paul
Konerko hit a sacrifice fly to right to go ahead 13-12.

"It was pretty much like a heavyweight fight," Manuel said. "I
thought we had them with a rope-a-dope or whatever we were doing
out there."

Hasegawa, who couldn't hold an 8-5 lead Friday, blew his second
save in the series. Hasegawa entered the series having given up
just one earned run in his previous 34 1-3 innings

"How can you discount this team we just played?" said Anaheim's
Tim Salmon. "They battle you every step, up and down the lineup.
They never say die."

Kelly Wunsch (5-3) pitched two innings for the win. Keith Foulke
pitched the ninth for his 27th save in 32 opportunities.

Thomas hit an RBI double and a two-run double in the first as the
White Sox scored nine runs off Ramon Ortiz, who retired only two
batters in the shortest outing in his 22-start career. Thomas
added a solo shot in the sixth to draw Chicago within 11-10. It
is the fourth 40-homer season for Thomas. He is one shy of his
career high of 41 set in 1993.

Troy Glaus set an Angels record by hitting his 40th home run, one
of five homers by Anaheim. Salmon and Scott Spiezio each hit
three-run homers and Darrin Erstad hit a pair of solo shots.
Salon homered in the sixth, his 32nd, off rookie Matt Ginter to
put the Angels ahead 10-9. One out later, Glaus followed with his
40th off Ginter to break the club mark of 39 set by Reggie
Jackson in 1982.

"That's not what I'm thinking about, individual records," Glaus
said. "I've never thought about hitting 40 home runs. Every time
you lose, you could have done more."

HOUSTON 9, ATLANTA 3

HOUSTON (AP) - Hitting has always come easy to Mitch Meluskey.

Houston's rookie catcher homered twice and Wade Miller won for
the third time in his last four decisions as the Astros beat the
Atlanta Braves 9-3 Sunday.

"Mitch is just a natural hitter," manager Larry Dierker said. "He
was a little rusty after coming off the disabled list (Aug. 18)
but he has found his stroke again."

Meluskey led off the fourth with a homer off Andy Ashby (8-12)
and hit a two-run shot in the eighth for his first career
multihomer game. Meluskey has three homers in the last two games.

"Hitting definitely is the part of my game that comes the
easiest," said Meluskey, who had three hits to raise his average
to .301. "But I still have to work on it every day. And I'm
disappointed with the way I'm hitting right-handed (.146) this
year. That's something I have to work on for next year."

Before he missed two weeks in early August with a sprained right
shoulder, he was a leading candidate for NL Rookie of the Year
and hopes he still has a shot. His two homers gave him 14 to move
back into the rookie lead ahead of the Phillies' Pat Burrell and
the Mets' Jay Payton. He's tied with Burrell for the lead in RBI
with 58 each.

The Braves have lost 5-of-7 and 8-of-11, but still hold a
half-game lead in the NL East over the New York Mets, who lost
4-3 in 11 innings to St. Louis.

"There's no panic in this club," manager Bobby Cox said. "I think
the day off tomorrow may help us. Maybe it'll break things up a
little for us."

Miller (4-5) gave up two runs, nine hits and three walks in seven
innings. He struck out seven.

Ashby, who lost his fourth straight decision, gave up five runs
and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings. He did not walk or strike out a
batter. Ashby left his last start Tuesday after six innings
against the Reds with a blood blister on the middle finger of his
pitching hand.

B.J. Surhoff led off the second inning for Atlanta with a triple
and scored on Javy Lopez's groundout for a 1-0 ead. Keith
Lockhart's RBI single in the fourth made it 2-0. Meluskey's first
homer started a five-run fourth inning for Houston. Jeff Bagwell,
Lance Berkman and Moises Alou followed with singles to tie it at
2.

Richard Hidalgo added an RBI double, Chris Truby had a
run-scoring groundout, and Bill Spiers had an RBI infield single
to knock out Ashby. Truby's sacrifice fly made it 6-2 in the
fifth. Spiers singled to center, driving in Julio Lugo in the
eighth and Meluskey followed with his 14th homer.

LOS ANGELES 6, PHILADELPHIA 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Chan Ho Park's season is similar to that of
the Los Angeles Dodgers in general -- too little, too late.

Park won his fourth consecutive start Sunday night, allowing two
hits over eight innings as the Dodgers completed a three-game
sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-1. Los Angeles has won
11-of-14 and a season-best six straight at home, but remains
seven games behind San Francisco in the NL West and 6 1/2 out of
a wild-card spot.

"You should try to get these kind of winning streaks when it
really counts -- a lot earlier in the season, so that you can put
pressure on teams," said left fielder Gary Sheffield, who had two
run-scoring singles. "If we were playing like this a lot earlier,
we'd probably be one or two games ahead or behind, and then take
our chances from there. But right now, we've got a lot of work
cut out for us."

So does Park (15-8), who has to win his five remaining starts to
become the Dodgers' first 20-game winner since Ramon Martinez in
1990. Park has not allowed more than two earned runs in seven
straight and is 5-1 with a 1.69 ERA during that span.

"Since I've been here, he's been a second-half pitcher,"
Sheffield said. "But that's something we need from April on --
and that's something every guy in this room has to concentrate on
coming out of spring training."

The Phillies' only hits off Park were Scott Rolen's two-out
single in the first inning and Tomas Perez's leadoff single in
the eighth. The right-hander struck out six, tied a season high
with seven walks and induced three double-play grounders, while
matching his career high in victories.

Park, still looking for his first complete game shutout after 136
career starts, came out after 131 pitches. He has left three
games this season without allowing a run, pitching at least seven
innings each time.

"We knew the first couple of innings it was going to be tough to
see," Phillies manager Terry Francona said of the twilight
starting time. "We've only seen him pitch god. He's always been
tough on us."

Adrian Beltre and Shawn Green hit solo homers for the Dodgers.

The Phillies have lost five straight. They've scored the fewest
runs in the majors, and until the ninth, had not scored since the
fourth Friday night. Mike Lieberthal scored in the ninth when
Marlon Anderson's dribbler up the first-base line was mishandled
by reliever Terry Adams. Anderson was credited with an RBI.

Jeff Shaw retired Kevin Jordan with the bases loaded and two outs
for his 24th save in 31 chances. Robert Person (7-5) was charged
with four runs and five hits in six innings.

MINNESOTA 2, NEW YORK 1 (10)

NEW YORK (AP) - Rookie Matt Kinney and boyhood idol Roger Clemens
both pitched well enough to win. Instead, Torii Hunter stole it
with his legs -- and help from reliever Mariano Rivera.

Hunter drew a two-out walk, swiped second on Rivera's mental
lapse and scored on pinch-hitter Denny Hocking's single in the
10th inning to lift the Minnesota Twins over the New York Yankees
2-1 Sunday.

"We beat ourselves with that play," Yankees manager Joe Torre
said.

The Twins stopped a four-game losing streak and ended New York's
three-game winning string. The Yankees had five hits, the Twins
four, and there was a 54-minute rain delay in the middle of the
eighth.

After Hunter walked, he broke for second with Rivera (7-4) still
in the set position. But Rivera did not notice until it was too
late, and then threw to first baseman Tino Martinez, who had no
play.

"There was a lot of crowd noise, the dirt on the mound was muddy
and I decided I was going," Hunter said. "I was counting -- one
thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three -- and going
on three no matter what.

"When I started, I could hear Tino yelling for him to throw the
ball. But he was just holding it. I don't know what he was
thinking," he said. "After I got three or four steps, I knew I
had it stolen."

It was only Hunter's third stolen base in five tries.

"No, I didn't see him. I take my eyes off him," Rivera said.
"Tino yell for me to throw. I was on my way to first, I couldn't
do anything. If I go to second, it's a balk."

After an intentional walk to Jacque Jones, Hocking delivered his
team-high seventh pinch-hit in 20 tries.

Eddie Guardado (5-3) pitched 2 1/3 innings and LaTroy Hawkins got
two outs for his 10th save.

Hunter, who made two sensational catches in center field during
Saturday's 13-4 loss, tracked down Bernie Williams' fly with
runners on first and second to end it. Martinez homered in the
Yankees second and almost won it in the ninth, lining a drive off
the top of the right-field wall or a single.

Clemens allowed three hits in eight innings, striking out eight
and walking one. Kinney, who grew up in Maine following Clemens,
gave up just two hits in six innings. He worked around five walks
without rattling and struck out four.
