ATLANTA 8, HOUSTON 6

HOUSTON (AP) - Greg Maddux is getting used to pitching after
giving up five runs in the first inning. Maddux got hammered in
the first inning for the second straight start, but the Atlanta
Braves rallied to beat the Houston Astros, 8-6, Saturday night to
move back into first place in the NL East.

"Sometimes this game makes you look better than you are and
sometimes it make you look worse than you are," said Maddux, who
gave up five runs in the first for the fourth time in his career
and second consecutive start. "After the first inning, I just
figured you take your medicine and see how long you can last."

The win, combined with the Mets' 2-1 loss to St. Louis earlier in
the day, lifted the Braves back into first place in the NL East
by a half game.

"Two starts like that wouldn't happen in a billion years to a guy
like him," manager Bobby Cox said. "But it happened and that just
shows you how crazy a game this is.

"It also shows you how tough he is to hang in there and keep his
composure."

Maddux (15-8) gave up five runs in the first inning, but settled
down and lasted 7 1/3 innings. Maddux, who lost five of his
previous eight starts, allowed six runs on 10 hits, struck out
eight and walked only one.

Pinch-hitter Bobby Bonilla hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the
eighth inning off reliever Octavio Dotel. It was Dotel's third
blown save in 14 opportunities.

"If you put Dotel in that situation, he'd probably get him out
eight out of 10 times," manager Larry Dierker said. "He had him
where he wanted him at first when it was 0-2 but then he got
himself into a position (2-2) where he had to throw a strike."

John Rocker pitched a perfect ninth for his 18th save in 20
chances.

Scott Elarton (15-5), who won 11 of his previous 12 decisions,
allowed seven runs, seven hits and six walks in 7 2/3 innings. He
struck out eight.

Moises Alou hit a career-high three doubles, drove in two runs
and scored two for Houston.

In the first inning, Andruw Jones' 31st home run clared the
tracks high above left field and would have gone out if the Enron
Field roof was retracted. Jordan's bases-loaded double to the
right-field corner then drove in Chipper Jones and B.J. Surhoff
for a 3-0 lead.

Houston answered with five runs in the bottom of the first as
Richard Hidalgo's broken bat single to left drove in Bill Spiers
from third. Alou then doubled to left center to drive in Jeff
Bagwell and Hidalgo, tying the score 3-3. Mitch Meluskey's 12th
home run drove in Alou and gave Houston a 5-3 lead.

CHICAGO 13, ANAHEIM 6

CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago White Sox wanted Charles Johnson for
his defensive presence in their push to the postseason. That's
why they traded for him. And now, they're getting much more,
another lift for their already potent offense.

Johnson had a career-high seven RBIs Saturday night, hitting a
three-run homer, a three-run double and an RBI single to lead a
13-6 win over Anaheim, as the White Sox increased their AL
Central lead to 8 1/2 games.

"I'm getting used to my environment here," Johnson said.

"When you come in as a catcher, it's tough because there is a lot
of focus on me trying to work with the staff and learn a lot of
these guys. I'm trying to plug away and get my hits and keep my
average up because if I do, the home runs take care of
themselves."

Johnson is batting .310 with four homers and 20 RBIs in 24 games
with the White Sox since he was acquired from Baltimore along
with Harold Baines for Brook Fordyce on July 29.

And in this his best offensive season overall, he's hitting .297
with career highs in homers (25) and RBIs (75).

Johnson doubled to clear the bases in a four-run second and hit
his 25th homer in the seventh to ward off an Angels comeback.

Jim Parque (11-6) got his first win since Aug. 16 and appeared to
be breezing with a two-hit shutout and 10-0 lead after Chicago
scored five in the fifth. But he was removed after walking the
first three batters to start the sixth.

Mark Buehrle relieved, and after Ron Gant's run-scoring fielder's
choice grounder and Ray Durham's error for dropping a throw,
Garret Anderson hit his 32nd homer, a three-run shot.

The Angels loaded the bases off Buehrle with no outs in the
seventh on a single and two more walks before Kelly Wunsch got
out of the inning, allowing just a sacrifice fly to Mo Vaughn
that made it 10-6.

Johnson's homer off Bryan Ward followed singles by Paul Konerko
and Jeff Abbott.

"We didn't give ourselves a real chance," Angels manager Mike
Scioscia said. "We had five hits. We were don 4-0 and still had
confidence. But down 10-0, the chances are remote you'll get
back."

The White Sox took advantage of Kent Mercker's wildness to score
four times in the second, then broke away with a five-run fifth.

Mercker (1-3) gave up four runs and two hits in two innings and
left with a strained rotator cuff.

"He could miss a start, best case," Scioscia said, adding Mercker
might need an MRI.

LOS ANGELES 1, PHILADELPHIA 0 (10)

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Tom Goodwin finally made a contribution for
the Los Angeles Dodgers. Goodwin, who has struggled since coming
to Los Angeles at the trade deadline, hit a two-out RBI single in
the 10th inning that lifted the Dodgers to a 1-0 victory over the
Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night.

Goodwin, acquired from Colorado for Todd Hollandsworth and a pair
of minor leaguers, drove in only five runs, stole four bases and
hit .235 while striking out 22 times in 98 at-bats coming into
Saturday.

"I'm not in it for high moments. I'm not trying to come over here
and be some savior. I'm just trying to help the team win any way
I can," Goodwin said.

"Just because you don't get hits all the time, you might go out
and play great defense to help the team win. But it's not going
to be read about in the papers or talked about on TV. So I don't
get caught up in that. I just go out and play."

The Dodgers' 10th victory in 13 games put them eight games over
.500, equaling a season best, and gave them five consecutive home
victories for the first time this season.

Jeff Branson doubled with one out in the 10th against Vicente
Padilla (3-4). Dave Hansen advanced Branson with a grounder to
first base and Goodwin drove Padilla's next pitch to center.

Branson's key hit quickly got the fans back on his side -- two
innings after he was booed by the crowd of 37,244 for popping up
an attempted sacrifice bunt.

Matt Herges (9-3) earned the victory with a perfect 10th. The
30-year-old rookie right-hander has recorded all of his victories
in relief and all of his losses as a starter.

Kevin Brown matched zeros with Bruce Chen through the first seven
innings before being replaced by Antonio Osuna. The Dodgers
right-hander has allowed fewer than two earned runs in 12 of his
28 starts, but is only 5-1 in those games.

Chen tied a career high with eight strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings
and walked one. The 23-year-old left-hander, who joined
Philadelphia on July 12 in a trade that sent AndyAshby to
Atlanta, has allowed only one run over 17 1/3 innings in his last
two starts -- after surrendering nine earned runs in 13 innings
during his previous two outings.

"He's been very impressive since he's been here, and he's been
real tough these last two starts," Phillies pitching coach Galen
Cisco said.

"He's gotten his breaking ball over a little bit better and he's
changed speeds well with his curveball. Tonight he had a good
fastball, good location and stayed ahead of the hitters for the
most part. And if he keeps improving, he's going to be a good
pitcher for a long time."

NEW YORK 13, MINNESOTA 4 (7 1/2, RAIN)

NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Yankees are playing like the Bronx
Bombers once again. Scott Brosius, Paul O'Neill and Jorge Posada
homered as New York pounded Eric Milton for eight runs in a 13-4
rain-shortened victory over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday.

"We have power right down the lineup," manager Joe Torre said
after the Yankees won for the ninth time in 12 games. "We really
have some thumpers now."

Not even two spectacular catches by Minnesota center fielder
Torii Hunter could slow down the Yankees' offense, which leads
the majors with 319 runs since the All-Star break.

New York scored five in the third inning despite Hunter's
tumbling catch on the warning track with the bases loaded. The
Yankees added three in the fourth on O'Neill's 17th homer, and
five in the sixth, highlighted by Posada's 25th homer, to move a
season-high six games ahead of Boston in the AL East.

"This team is starting to click right now," starter Denny Neagle
said. "We're hitting on all cylinders. We're getting good
defense, and obviously the guys are hitting the ball well."

The game was called after a 38-minute rain delay in the eighth
inning with streaks of lightning, heavy thunder and a downpour
sending 47,438 fans scrambling for cover on Old Timers Day.

Neagle (5-4), who allowed seven runs in the first innings of his
last two starts, pitched a perfect opening frame. But he wasn't
very effective after that, allowing four runs and eight hits in 5
1/3 innings.

"I'm trying to make the perfect pitch," Neagle said. "Every time
there's a guy on base I start tinkering. My problems right now
are more mental than physical."

Not that it mattered on this day.

The Yankees have won three World Series titles in the past four
years based mostly on pitching, not the prodigious power that
made them baseball's most successful franchise.

But it's been a revived offense in the second half that has
helped New York open up ground in the AL East. The Yankees led
the league with 45 homers in August nd already have six in the
first two games in September. After hitting only 100 homers in
the first 83 games, New York has 74 in 49 games since the
All-Star break.

Jay Canizaro had an RBI single in the third and a two-run homer
in the fifth for Minnesota.

Milton (12-8), who won twice this year against his former team,
allowed eight runs -- six earned -- and seven hits in four
innings.

Jason Grimsley got seven outs for his first save since July 17,
1999, and third of his career.
