CHICAGO 9, ANAHEIM 8

CHICAGO (AP) - Jose Valentin made the pain go away with one
simple swing. Appearing as a pinch-hitter because a pelvic
inflammation kept him out of the starting lineup, Valentin capped
one of the Chicago White Sox's most remarkable victories in this
most improbable season.

He hit a go-ahead, two-run single to finish a six-run eighth
inning Friday night as the White Sox rallied against one of
baseball's best relievers, Anaheim's Shigetoshi Hasegawa, and
beat the Angels 9-8.

"It only hurts when I run, not when I swing," Valentin said in a
jubilant White Sox clubhouse where the walls rocked with loud
music. "I saw the ball drop in the outfield and all the pain went
away.

"This time of year to win like this is just big. We were down 8-2
and only had three more shots."

Chicago stayed 7 1/2 games ahead of Cleveland in the AL Central.

"We were all watching the scoreboard and we knew Cleveland had
won," White Sox manager Jerry Manuel said. "To come back and win
like that speaks volumes about the club, to overcome what we
overcame."

The White Sox trailed 8-3 entering the eighth before Frank Thomas
hit his 39th homer and Magglio Ordonez followed with his 26th
homer off Al Levine. After Carlos Lee singled, Levine was
replaced by Hasegawa (8-4), who had given up just one earned run
in his previous 34 1/3 innings. He yielded a single to Paul
Konerko, struck out out Harold Baines and then gave up an RBI
single to Charles Johnson that went off third baseman Troy Glaus'
glove and made it 8-6.

Ray Durham followed with an RBI double down the third-base line
to make it 8-7 in what Manuel called the key at-bat of the rally.
Valentin then dropped a soft single to center to score two and
put the White Sox ahead.

"You can't get them all the time. I'm not going to change
anything, other than being a little more patient when they foul a
lot of balls off," Hasegawa said.

The victory went to rookie Matt Ginter (1-0), who pitched a
scoreless eighth in his major league debut. Keith Foulke pitched
the ninth for his 26th save in 31 chances, striking out Mo Vaughn
and Tim Salmon to end the game.

Glaus tied a club record with his 39th homer, a two-run shot to
cap a four-run first. Vaughn hit a grand slam in the fifth as the
Angels jumped out to a big lead they couldn't hold.

The Angels are four games back of Seattle in the AL West.

Glaus tied Reggie Jackson's club mark set in 1982. Darin Erstad
had three hits, giving him 204 and breaking the Angels record of
202 set by Alex Johnson in 1970.

HOUSTON 3, ATLANTA 2

HOUSTON (AP) - The Atlanta Braves aren't used to being in a
pennant race or in a losing stretch late in the season.

Moises Alou homered and drove in two runs as Jose Lima pitched
the Houston Astros past slumping Atlanta 3-2 Friday night, as the
Braves remained behind the New York Mets in the NL East.

"We're beyond frustrated, we were frustrated two weeks ago,"
third baseman Chipper Jones said. "This is bordering on insanity.
We've been slumping for so long."

The Braves lost for the sixth time in seven games against a team
that is going nowhere in the playoffs this season.

"We've had bad slumps before, but it seems like this is one
that's never going to end," Jones said. You just come out and
play every day and hope that today is the day it ends and
eventually, maybe it will be."

The Braves, who have won eight straight division titles, trail
the Mets by a half-game in the NL East.

"We want to win this division, we don't want to go into the
playoffs as the wild card," outfielder Reggie Sanders said. "I
don't see us as panicking. The stats show that we haven't
produced with runners in scoring position but we've still got 27
games left. We've got time to turn it around."

Alou hit his 26th homer of the season in the second inning. The
Astros took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Alou and
a sacrifice fly by Chris Truby off John Burkett (8-6).

"I'm glad we're playing the way we are," Alou said. "We're just
trying to show our fans that we're going to be for real next year
and also show the front off the players they can count on. This
team's got a lot of character."

The Astros have won 12 of their last 17 games.

After Truby's sacrifice fly, Lima singled to load the bases with
two outs. Roger Cedeno took a called third strike to end the
inning.

Lima (6-15) pitched six innings and allowed six hits and two
earned runs. He walked two, both in the first inning, and struck
out two. Lima walked Rafael Furcal to start the game. Furcal
stole a base and later scored on a single by B.J. Surhoff.
Octavio Dotel pitched the ninth for his 11th save in 13 chances.

Sanders hit his seventh homer in the Braves second. Lima leads
the majors in home runs allowed with 40.

Burkett hasn't won a game since July 29, when he beat the Astros
13-5. He is 0-2 in six starts since that victory.

"It seems bad right now but I've seen a lot worse than this,"
Burkett said. "You're talking to a guy who hasn't been with the
Braves his whole career. This is still a great team and I think
we will prove it again. It will turn around."

LOS ANGELES 2, PHILADELPHIA 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Both Ismael Valdes and Los Angeles Dodgers
manager Davey Johnson were encouraged by the right-hander's
strong outing.

"Ismael was outstanding, couldn't have pitched much better,"
Johnson said Friday night after Valdes, who has struggled this
year, held Philadelphia in check for seven innings during the
Dodgers' 2-1 victory over the Phillies.

"He located pitches, was never in trouble, was totally in
control," Johnson said. "That's the Ismael who was our No. 2
(starter) last year."

Valdes gave up just one unearned run -- on his first error of the
season -- but did not get a decision since the game was tied 1-1
when he gave way to a pinch-hitter.

"As long as I pitch and my team wins, that is what is important,"
said Valdes, who struck out six and allowed three hits and one
walk.

Adrian Beltre's two-out solo homer off Chris Brock in the eighth
lifted Los Angeles to the victory.

"It's a great feeling to hit a home run to win the game," said
Beltre, who has raised his average from .251 to .297 since the
All-Star break, also driving in 36 runs over that span to run his
RBIs total to 74.

Mike Fetters (6-2) pitched a 1-2-3 eighth for the Dodgers to get
the win. But he apparently strained a muscle fielding a bunt by
Tomas Perez and making a hurried throw to first for the third
out. Jeff Shaw pitched the ninth for his 23rd save in 30 chances.

Brock (7-7) gave up one hit, Beltre's 15th homer, in one inning.

The Phillies' Randy Wolf battled Valdes on even terms through
seven innings, also giving up one run. Wolf struck out eight and
gave up the one run on six hits and four walks.

"His command was as sharp as we've seen it at times, but to give
up one run through seven against that lineup, I thought he did a
heck of a job," Philadelphia manager Terry Francona said. "You're
not going to have pinpoint command every night, especially a
23-year-old kid.

"But he found a way to get outs when he had to and he started
throwing his breaking ball over the plate."

Marlon Anderson led off with a single to left and, with Perez up
next, Valdes tried to pick off Anderson first base. The ball
sailed far to first baseman Eric Karros' right, caromed off
umpire Kerwin Danley and bounced toward right field, with
Anderson winding up on third. He scored when Perez grounded out
to short.

NEW YORK 4, MINNESOTA 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Orlando Hernandez began September with the
pitching form he usually flashes in October. El Duque allowed
five hits in eight innings and Paul O'Neill, Tino Martinez and
Bernie Williams backed him with home runs Friday night to lead
the New York Yankees over the Minnesota Twins, 4-2.

"That's vintage stuff," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "He seems
to have that confidence we've seen so often."

After losing four straight starts, a slide interrupted by three
weeks on the disabled list with aches in his right elbow and
back, Hernandez has won three in a row, allowing no more than
three runs and six hits.

Hernandez (11-10) struck out six and walked none for the first
time this season, throwing strikes on 72-of-98 pitches.

"It would really add something for us if El Duque continues to
pitch the way he has," Torre said.

Hernandez gave up a run in the fifth on doubles by David Ortiz
and Jacque Jones, and a homer in the seventh to Ortiz.

"Since I returned from the disabled list, I feel good and I'm
recuperating," said Hernandez, who doesn't reveal much to
reporters.

El Duque excels in the postseason, with a career mark of 5-0 and
a 1.02 ERA. Just last month, with Hernandez and David Cone
pitching ineffectively, New York was worried, but Cone has won
three of his last four decisions after losing eight in a row,
giving the Yankees renewed confidence, even though their bullpen
has been unusually shaky.

Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth for his 31st save in 36 chances
as the Yankees won the eighth time in 11 games and maintained
their five-game lead over second-place Boston in the AL East.

Brad Radke (10-14) gave up all four runs and 10 hits in six-plus
innings, dropping to 2-8 against the Yankees in his career.

"It felt like they scored about 30 runs," Radke said. "I just
didn't feel sharp. It could have been the extra two days' rest."

O'Neill hit an opposite-field homer to left in the first, two
batters after Derek Jeter's leadoff single.

Martinez hoered leading off the fourth, his first since Aug. 9
and just his fourth since the All-Star break. He has 12 overall.

Williams homered leading off the fifth, then made a fine diving
catch on Ron Coomer's drive to right-center leading off the
seventh. It turned out to be important, because Ortiz followed
with a homer, just the 103rd this year for the Twins, by far the
major league low.
