CHICAGO 8, OAKLAND 3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Chicago White Sox, who have lost some
steam in the second half of the season, are showing signs of
heating up again.

Getting another well-pitched game, this time from starter Mike
Sirotka and reliever Bobby Howry, the White Sox downed Oakland
8-3 Wednesday to win 2-of-3 in the matchup of two of the AL's
highest-scoring teams. Chicago pitchers gave up just six runs in
the three games against the Athletics, who have scored 746 runs
to a league-high 807 by the White Sox.

"Another good performance by our pitchers; we got real solid
efforts back-to-back," White Sox manager Jerry Manuel said.
"Sirotka is one of the guys that if he gets hot down the stretch
can help us win some games."

James Baldwin combined with relievers to blank the Athletics 3-0
in the second game of the series after Oakland's Tim Hudson threw
a one-hitter in the Athletics' 3-0 win in the opener. Chicago is
just 24-22 since the All-Star break, but remains well ahead in
the AL Central.

"I think it's just been a matter of holding the fort," said
Sirotka. "When we get Jon (Garland) and Cal (Eldred) back, it
will stabilize our pitching and give our offense some support."

Sirotka (13-10) pitched seven strong innings and Jose Valentin
put Chicago in front with a two-run single in the seventh.
Sirotka limited Oakland to two runs and six hits, including a
solo homer by Eric Chavez in the fourth inning.

The White Sox scored four times in the ninth to break the game
open. Oakland had closed to 4-3 on Jason Giambi's RBI double off
reliever Kelly Wunsch in the eighth, but Howry replaced Wunsch
and retired the next three batters to preserve the lead. Howry
got six outs for his sixth save.

Chicago stretched the lead in the ninth, when Oakland's Jason
Isringhausen hit Magglio Ordonez with a pitch with the bases
loaded, then walked Harold Baines to force in another run. The
White Sox scored two more on Carlos Lee's RBI grounder, with
Ordonez coming home on shortstop Miguel Tejada's throwing error.

Kevin Appier (12-10) limited the White Sox to one run through six
innings and the Athletics were up 2-1 when the right-hander ran
into trouble in the seventh. Appier allowed four runs and seven
hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked two.

"Appier pitched well; he deserved better," Oakland manager Art
Howe said. "We were right in the game but then they broke it
open. At the same time, Sirotka pitched well. All three games
were well-pitched by both clubs."

Oakland is 22-24 since the All-Star break.

COLORADO 5, PHILADELPHIA 4 (11)

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Rookie Ben Petrick saved his manager Buddy
Bell from having another sticky situation.

Out of available position players and his bullpen down to just
two pitchers, Petrick hit a solo homer in the 11th inning and the
Colorado Rockies, helped by Todd Helton's three-run double, beat
the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 Wednesday night.

"We just wanted to get this thing over with and Ben came through
in a huge spot," said Bell, who was back in the dugout after
serving a two-game suspension.

Bell didn't want to experience another site that occurred eight
days earlier, when catcher Brent Mayne was called into the game
to pitch. Bell used pitcher Brian Bohanon as a pinch-hitter in
the 11th on Wednesday.

"Mayner wasn't available tonight, to hit or pitch," Bell said,
laughing, of the first non-pitcher to win a game since 1968 when
he pitched a scoreless inning against Atlanta.

Helton went 1-for-4 with a walk. His batting average dropped a
point to .395. Petrick connected with two outs for his third
homer of the season off Wayne Gomes (4-6). Doug Glanville had
four hits and drove in two runs for Philadelphia. Bobby Abreu hit
a two-run homer, his 22nd, for the Phillies.

The win allowed Colorado to finish its road trip at 5-1 and moved
the club three games over .500 at 68-65. Gabe White (9-1) pitched
two innings to pick up the win. Jose Jimenez, who pitched 2 1/3
innings on Tuesday, got three outs for his 18th save.

"We really didn't want to use Jose, but when Benny hit the homer
I felt I had to give him the ball," Bell said.

Jimenez took his allotted amount of pitches when he reached the
mound. Then, Jimenez got some more warmup pitches when shortstop
Neifi Perez had something in his eye. As the trainer was working
on Perez, Phillies manager Terry Francona erupted at home plate
umpire Rob Drake and was tossed from the game.

"(Jose) wasn't ready, we knew that," Francona said. "I don't
blame them for trying to stall, I'd do the same thing, but the
umpire has to step in there. Perez took ground balls, then all of
a sudden got something in his eye. I was saying they can't do
that."

Colorado rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the sixth inning against
starter Kent Bottenfield. He had retired 15-of-16 batters in the
first five innings, but loaded the bases before Helton delivered
a double to the left-center field gap to tie it at 4.

"Kent pitched a great game outside of that one inning," Francona
said. "You can't make a mistake, especially a high fastball, to
Todd Helton. He'll hurt you."

NEW YORK 1, HOUSTON 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Rick Reed and the New York Mets sweated one out.

On a humid night, Reed combined with two relievers on a
three-hitter to make a first-inning run stand up, and the Mets
beat the Houston Astros 1-0 Wednesday to hold on to their share
of the NL East lead. Reed (9-4) didn't allow a hit until Bill
Spiers singled with one out in the fifth, winning for the fifth
time in his last seven decisions.

"The baseball purist gets a lot of pleasure, joy and excitement,"
Mets manager Bobby Valentine said of one-run games. "A manager
feels of a lot of joy when it's over and he has the one run."

Mets catcher Mike Piazza decided early to go with Reed's
fastball, and the pitcher dominated.

"He's been a lot more aggressive this year, using both sides of
the plate, challenging guys," Piazza said. "He's not nearly as
tentative in a big situation. With (Moises) Alou and (Jeff)
Bagwell tonight, we were charging them. It's as much attitude as
making good pitches."

Reed gave up three hits in seven innings, struck out six and
walked two. The Mets got him the run when Benny Agbayani scored
on Chris Holt's wild pitch to Piazza.

"I was watching Piazza a lot," Astros manager Larry Dierker said,
"and when he went inside -- boom! -- the pitch went inside. And
when he went outside -- boom! -- the pitch went outside. I don't
think Reed threw more than five or six pitches over the middle of
the plate. You're going to beat a guy with control like that? You
have to hit practically every mistake, and we didn't do that."

Reed felt dizzy in the third, probably due to the humidity. He
went into the clubhouse, drank some fluids and took a bite from a
candy bar. By the seventh, Valentine thought about pulling him,
but Reed persuaded pitching coach Dave Wallace to leave him in.

"Our eyes had him as out of gas," Valentine said. "His velocity
dropped. His location went from below the belt to the belt up,
Rick just said, 'I'm here to do it. I can do it.'"

New York, a major league-best 31-16 since the All-Star break,
took 2-of-3 from Houston despite scoring six runs in the series.

Holt (6-13), who dropped to 0-3 in his career against the Mets,
walked Agbayani in the first and gave up a single to Darryl
Hamilton. Agbayani advanced when Edgardo Alfonzo bounced into a
double play and came home when Holt bounced a wild curveball to
Piazza. New York only advanced one more runner past second.

Turk Wendell pitched a 1-2-3 eighth, and Armando Benitez struck
out the side in the ninth for his 36th save in 40 chances.

NEW YORK 5, SEATTLE 4

SEATTLE (AP) - David Cone is getting closer to where he wants to
be. Cone pitched 5 2/3 strong innings and Luis Sojo hit a two-run
double as the New York Yankees bounced back from a tough loss by
beating the Seattle Mariners, 5-4, Wednesday night.

One night after being beaten on Edgar Martinez's grand slam in
the eighth inning, the Yankees increased their lead in the AL
East back to five games over Boston.

"I feel good about the way I'm throwing," said Cone (4-11), who
endured a career-worst eight-game losing streak this season. "I'm
definitely on the right track.

Cone was taken out by manager Joe Torre after giving up a two-out
single to Joe Oliver in the sixth. He allowed one run, five hits
and four walks, while striking out six.

"I had good stuff tonight," said Cone, who finished 3-1 in August
after going 0-8 from May-July. "I really was happy with the way I
pitched out of the stretch."

Seattle lost for the 14th time in 17 games, but remained 2 1/2
games ahead of Oakland in the AL West.

But the Mariners almost posted another dramatic comeback. Mark
McLemore's two-run homer off Dwight Gooden in the eighth cut New
York's lead to 5-3. Then Seattle mounted a rally off Yankees
closer Mariano Rivera.

Alex Rodriguez led off the with a walk and went to third on Edgar
Martinez's single. Martinez is 9-for-11 in his career off Rivera.

Al Martin struck out, Mike Cameron hit into an RBI groundout and
Raul Ibanez grounded out to end the game. Rivera got five outs
for his 30th save in 35 chances.

Seattle manager Lou Piniella was upset with starter Aaron Sele
(13-10), who lasted just 3 2/3 innings.

"You would like to think your starters could hold the other team
down early and give your offense a chance," he said.

Sele, who lost his career-worst fourth straight start, allowed
four runs, six hits and three walks.

The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the first on a double by Jorge
Posada, a wild pitch by Sele and Paul O'Neill's sacrifice fly.

They made it 4-0 in the fourth. Bernie Williams singled, David
Justice walked and Tino Martinez hit an RBI double. After Sele
hit Glenallen Hill with a pitch, Sojo doubled to right to score
two.

Sojo, playing for the injured Chuck Knoblauch, has hit in
18-of-21 games since rejoining the Yankees in a trade from
Pittsburgh Aug. 7.
