MONTREAL 5, HOUSTON 4

MONTREAL (AP) - The Montreal Expos will take their wins any way
they can get them.

Dustin Hermanson took a shutout into the ninth inning for the
second straight start, and Jose Vidro hit his 21st homer as the
Expos barely snapped a nine-game home losing streak with a 5-4
win over the Houston Astros on Saturday night.

"I'm just glad we got a win," Hermanson said. "The wins have been
hard to come by lately and it's good to get another one."

Hermanson (10-11), who came within one strike of pitching a
shutout in his last start, allowed eight hits and one walk before
leaving after Moises Alou's one-out RBI single in the ninth.

"Actually, when it was 1-0, I thought I was home," Hermanson
said. "I wanted to go out there and have that game, but the way
things turned out, there were two hits right there. They did the
job they had to to keep their team in it and keep that ninth
inning rolling, and they got me out of there."

Steve Kline came in and gave up an infield single to pinch-hitter
Chris Truby and Tony Eusebio followed with a three-run double.
Kline then retired Tim Bogar and pinch-hitter Mitch Meluskey for
his 14th save. The Expos stopped a four-game losing streak.

Eusebio had two hits to extend his career-best hitting streak to
22 games, one short of the team record.

Vidro homered off Jose Lima (5-15) in the fourth to break Mike
Lansing's 1997 team record for home runs by a second baseman.
Vidro's homer was the 39th allowed by Lima, who gave up just five
hits in seven innings.

"I tried to stay away, because you don't want a guy to beat you
with your best stuff," Lima said. "He's a great hitter. It was a
fastball over the plate. I tried to throw a two-seam fastball and
it came up on me, and he hit it out."

Montreal added four runs in the eighth off reliever Marc Valdes
on Milton Bradley's RBI double, Vidro's run-scoring single,
Vladimir Guerrero's RBI triple and an RBI single by Geoff Blum.

"I thought it was going to be good enough for Hermanson, the way
he was pitching," Vidro said. "Maybe he got tired or they got to
him, you've got to give credit to them, too. Hermanson was
dominant the whole game and then in the ninth they were able to
get some hits. I thought when we scored four in the eighth it was
going to be good enough."

The Expos won for just the second time in their last 15 games at
Olympic Stadium. Montreal has won just 7-of-31 overall. Hermanson
gave up three runs and struck out seven.

NEW YORK 10, OAKLAND 6

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Orlando Hernandez didn't look happy. He
had to feel better than the Oakland Athletics though.

Clay Bellinger hit his first two career triples and drove in
three runs to help Hernandez win his second straight start as the
New York Yankees defeated the A's 10-6 on Saturday.

"I'm not obligated to be happy," Hernandez said through an
interpreter. "But I'm pleased because we won."

Hernandez (10-10), who had lost four straight decisions before
winning his last two, struck out a season-high 11 in seven
innings. He gave up three runs, five hits and three walks. He
threw a season-high 134 pitches.

"I've just prepared myself for this," Hernandez said. "I'm
healthy now. I'll be OK."

Mark Mulder (7-10) allowed six runs and 10 hits in two-plus
innings, his shortest outing of the year. He walked one and
struck out one as he lost for the eighth time in 10 decisions
since June 30.

"I just made bad pitches all day," Mulder said. "I'm the one who
made the mistakes, and they took advantage of me."

Bernie Williams, who missed the previous seven games with a
strained right rib cage, singled in the first inning to score
Derek Jeter. Tino Martinez added a two-run single in the inning.

"It was nice having Bernie out there," Yankees' manager Joe Torre
said. "He was sort of a stabilizing force for us. He held things
together."

Luis Sojo had an RBI single in the second and Jose Canseco hit
his 12th homer leading off the third. It was the 443rd homer of
his career, which moves him into sole possession of 23rd place on
the career list.

Jorge Posada doubled home Martinez to make it 6-0 and end
Mulder's day.

"We gave up too many runs too early," A's manager Art Howe said.
"They jumped on us. (Mulder) didn't make good pitches."

Bellinger tripled home two runs and Jeter added a sacrifice fly
in the fifth against reliever Omar Olivares. Bellinger was also
credited with a triple when Terrence Long lost his fly ball in
the sun in the seventh, scoring Scott Brosius.

Eric Chavez hit his 19th homer, a two-run shot off Hernandez in
the third, and Frank Menechino hit a three-run homer in the ninth
off Mike Stanton. Mariano Rivera got one out for his 28th save in
33 chances.

PHILADELPHIA 5, SAN FRANCISCO 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - It wasn't easy, but Randy Wolf is finally a
10-game winner. The left-hander threw 135 pitches over six
innings and notched his first victory since July 30 as the
Philadelphia Phillies beat the San Francisco Giants for the first
time in 10 tries, 5-2 Saturday.

"It felt like I was running into a 30 mph wind with a parachute
on," Wolf said. "I had a lot of things go the right way in this
game or it could have been a different story. My command wasn't
exactly there."

It was the Phillies' first victory over the Giants since June 2,
1999.

Wolf (10-7) gave up two runs on eight hits and struck out seven.
He walked five.

"It was a tremendously gutsy performance," said Philadelphia
manager Terry Francona, who watched his team post just its 12th
win in its last 37 games. "He always has a great outlook on
things. He really loves to pitch. It's real noticeable and you
could see that today."

Scott Rolen went 2-for-4 with a two-run triple and raised his
club-high RBI total to 71. Pat Burrell had a two-run double for
the Phillies, who scored all five of their runs with two outs.

Vicente Padilla pitched two perfect innings and has retired his
last 14 batters in a row over his last three appearances. Jeff
Brantley got the final three outs for his 20th save in 24
opportunities.

"Vicente was real crisp," Francona said. "That was the best
velocity we've seen from him since he came over here. He's
exciting to watch."

Phillies pitchers retired the final 12 Giants batters.

Philadelphia pushed across three runs to take a 3-0 lead in the
third inning off Kirk Rueter (8-9). With two outs, Burrell hit a
two-run double and Brian Hunter looped an RBI single. The Giants
cut the deficit to 3-1 in the fourth on Barry Bonds' sacrifice
fly. Philadelphia came back with two runs in its half of the
fourth to make the score 5-1. Rolen's liner was played into a
two-run triple when right fielder Ellis Burks lost the ball in
the sunlight.

"It was tough to see out there for the first four innings," San
Francisco manager Dusty Baker said. "Ellis just didn't see it.
Unfortunately, that turns into a big play."

Rueter failed to pitch past the fifth inning for his third
straight start. He worked four innings, allowing five runs on 10
hits.

SEATTLE 11, CHICAGO 5

SEATTLE (AP) - Joe Oliver knows better than any of Seattle's
players what Lou Piniella has been going through the past two
weeks because he was with the Mariners' manager in 1990 in
Cincinnati when the Reds won it all.

"It hasn't been fun for him," Oliver said after Seattle finally
found some offensive pop Saturday night in an 11-5 victory over
the Chicago White Sox for just their second win in 13 games. "Lou
wants to win this thing as much as anybody in this clubhouse."

Alex Rodriguez homered and Mike Cameron had three RBIs as Seattle
scored 10 runs in a game for the first time since Aug. 8. The
Mariners were held to four singles in a 4-1 loss to the White Sox
on Friday.

"We played like a first-place team is supposed to play," Piniella
said. "Let's hope we can build on it and get back on track."

Seattle, snapping a six-game losing streak at home, increased its
lead to 2 1/2 games over second-place Oakland in the AL West. The
Athletics lost to the New York Yankees 10-6 Saturday.

"You know they're eventually going to break out of the thing they
are going through right now," Chicago manager Jerry Manuel said.
"They are too good a club to continue to lose 11 out of 12
ballgames."

John Halama (11-6) gave up a single to Frank Thomas with two out
in the first inning and then retired 16 straight batters before
Tony Graffanino opened the seventh with a single.

Trailing 7-0, Chicago scored five runs in the seventh on a
two-run double by Paul Konerko, an RBI single by Herbert Perry
and a two-run single by Charles Johnson. After the game, Piniella
wasn't happy with Halama and Halama wasn't happy with Piniella.

"He got in trouble in the seventh and couldn't get out of it,"
Piniella said. "I was hoping he'd go deeper in the ballgame."

Halama, unhappy about not making a start in 10 days, said: "It's
not that easy. In fact, it's hard. I tried to go out and do the
best I could, but being in the bullpen is not the same as being
out on the mound."

The Mariners took a 3-0 lead after Rocky Biddle got two outs in
the fourth. Edgar Martinez, John Olerud and Carlos Guillen
singled with Martinez scoring from third on Guillen's hit. After
Cameron walked to load the bases, Oliver had a two-run single.
Seattle made it 5-0 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Al Martin
and Rodriguez's team-leading 32nd homer and added two more runs
in the sixth. Raul Ibanez homered in the eighth to make it 11-5.

Halama allowed five runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings. Biddle
gave up seven runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.
