CHICAGO 4, SEATTLE 1
SEATTLE (AP) - The Chicago White Sox are still proving
themselves.
Mike Sirotka beat Seattle for the second time this month and
Herbert Perry had three RBIs as the White Sox beat the slumping
Mariners 4-1 Friday night. Sirotka (12-10) limited the Mariners
to three hits in seven-plus innings, including an RBI single by
Dan Wilson in the second.
"This is our test," Sirotka said. "Every game is critical. I
don't think anybody in here doubts what's at stake."
"That was a huge night for Mike to give us that," White Sox
manager Jerry Manuel said. "He pretty much dominated the middle
of their lineup. He really had good stuff."
The left-hander didn't give up a hit after the second, striking
out five, walking four and committing a balk. He was replaced by
Bobby Howry after walking Wilson to lead off the eighth.
"I had good command down in the strike zone and got a lot of
ground balls," said Sirotka, who got Alex Rodriguez to hit into a
double play in the first and John Olerud to hit into a double
play in the seventh. "This has got to be fun. You wait your whole
life to get to this point."
Seattle lost its third straight and for the 11th time in 12
games. The Mariners, who led the AL West by seven games on Aug.
11, watched their lead over Oakland dwindle to 1 1/2 games. The
Athletics beat the New York Yankees 8-1 Friday night. The
Mariners lost their sixth straight at Safeco Field despite not
making an error for the first time in eight games.
Chicago closer Keith Foulke came on with the bases loaded and one
out in the ninth. He struck out Mike Cameron and pinch-hitter
Stan Javier for his 23rd save in 28 chances.
Aaron Sele (13-9) dropped his third straight decision during the
Mariners' August slide, which began after Seattle returned from
winning 3-of-4 in Chicago. Sele gave up four runs and nine hits
in 7 1/3 innings, including three runs in a 28-pitch first.
After Ray Durham grounded out, Jose Valentin doubled off left
fielder Rickey Henderson's glove and Sele walked Frank Thomas.
Magglio Ordonez lined out for the second out before Carlos Lee
singled to score Valentin from third. Sele walked Paul Konerko to
load the bases before Perry hit a two-run single to center.
Sele, who walked two and struck out five, said his walk to Thomas
in the first was the key to the big inning.
"I got behind on him and put him on," Sele said. "You aren't
going to come back from a 2-0, 3-0 count and give him a cookie to
hit. It was an unintentional intentional."

HOUSTON 3, MONTREAL 1
MONTREAL (AP) - Without his strongest stuff, Chris Holt knew he
could count on his shortstop. Holt pitched 7 1/3 strong innings
and Richard Hidalgo went 3-for-5 with a two-run single to lead
the Houston Astros to a 3-1 win over the struggling Montreal
Expos on Friday night.
Astros catcher Tony Eusebio went 2-for-4, singling in the second
to extend his career-best hitting streak to 21 games.
Holt (6-12) allowed one run and seven hits to win his second
straight decision. He struck out four and walked none.
"I didn't have my best game tonight," Holt said. "I had a good
sinker and got a lot of groundballs."
Holt credited shortstop Tim Bogar's defense as a key factor in
the win, Houston's ninth in its last 11 games.
"It helps me out when Bogie knows me out there," Holt said. "He
plays up the middle and we decided that we'll give up the chopper
between short and third to get it up the middle, because with a
lot of lefties, they did hit it up the middle. Bogie made good
plays and the defense played well."
Octavio Dotel pitched the ninth and got Vladimir Guerrero --
pinch hitting for his first appearance in four games -- to fly
out for his 10th save.
Montreal has lost four straight overall and nine straight at
Olympic Stadium. The Expos have won just twice in their last 15
games and have lost 24-of-30.
Expos manager Felipe Alou dismissed a report on the CNN/SI Web
site that he said he might be fired at the end of the season.
"They can say anything they want," Alou said. "There's only one
person that can fire me, and it's not CNN -- It's not Mr. (Ted)
Turner. It might be someone else."
The report was particularly upsetting to Alou's son, Moises, who
was hitless in three at-bats for Houston.
"That would be stupid," Moises Alou said. "It tells you how bad
this game is. There's no loyalty. My dad saved that franchise for
the last eight years. You talk about the team leaving next year.
That probably would have happened five years ago. In this game,
people don't appreciate what you do."
Felipe Lira (3-4) allowed five hits and three runs -- two earned
-- over five innings in his second start since joining the Expos'
rotation.
Lira walked Roger Cedeno to lead off the third. Julio Lugo hit a
grounder to third baseman Geoff Blum, whose throw was dropped by
second baseman Jose Vidro for an error. Jeff Bagwell singled to
load the bases and Hidalgo followed with a two-run single to put
Houston ahead 2-0. Bagwell, who advanced to third on Hidalgo's
single, scored the Astros third run of the inning on Alou's
sacrifice fly.

OAKLAND 8, NEW YORK 1
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Kevin Appier feels a little better about
facing the New York Yankees.
Appier, who had his worst outing of the year in Yankee Stadium
earlier this month, came back with one of his best on Friday
night, leading the Oakland Athletics to an 8-1 victory over New
York. Appier (12-9) gave up four hits and an unearned run in
eight innings. He struck out eight and walked four.
Appier (12-9) won for the fourth time in five decisions following
a season-high five-game losing streak. The only loss was to the
Yankees on Aug. 9, when he gave up 10 runs in 3 2/3 innings.
"This certainly made it sweeter considering what happened last
time," Appier said. "That got really ugly. It was bad stuff and
bad mechanics."
Eric Chavez and Ben Grieve each drove in three runs to support
Appier. Chavez hit a three-run double and Grieve had a two-run
single during a five-run third inning against David Cone (3-11).
Grieve later homered off reliever Randy Choate.
"The offense was awesome and they scored early," Appier said.
"That was definitely helpful."
Cone gave up six runs, five hits and three walks in three
innings. He had been 2-0 in his previous four starts, allowing a
total of seven runs in 23 innings.
"If you can't establish your fastball in and out, this team will
make you throw pitches they can handle," Cone said. "It all
centers around the fastball. It seemed like I was in a jam from
the start."
Cone defeated the A's on Aug. 10, ending his eight-game losing
streak and a stretch in which he went 15 starts without a win.
"This is just a bad outing," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "We
stayed with him all season and it as finally paying off. I'm just
going to dismiss this as a bad game and wait until he pitches
again."
Matt Stairs gave the A's a 1-0 lead when he hit his 18th homer of
the season in the second. The drive hit the facade of the
right-field bleachers. The Athletics scored for five runs in the
third, helped by Cone's wildness.
New York scored an unearned run in the seventh. Tino Martinez hit
an infield single and advanced to second when Appier threw the
ball away at first. After going to third on a wild pitch,
Martinez scored on Jorge Posada's infield grounder. Glenallen
Hill went 0-for-4, stopping his 13-game hitting streak for the
Yankees.

SAN FRANCISCO 16, PHILADELPHIA 3
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Russ Ortiz earned his fifth victory, but he
wanted to talk hitting. Who could blame him?
Ortiz, who entered the game batting .182, had a career-high three
hits and scored twice as the San Francisco Giants pounded out 21
hits in a 16-3 rout over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday
night. Ortiz was 3-for-3 with a walk. He singled in three
consecutive innings and knocked in a run.
"I hadn't hit a ball hard all year until tonight," said Ortiz,
who raised his average to .234. "I finally did it on my first
hit. That felt incredible. The other two singles were just hit in
the spots.
"It's fun to hit, but I'm not exactly a good hitter."
The Giants, winners of 9-of-11, extended their lead to 3 1/2
games over Arizona in the NL West, their biggest edge this year.
San Francisco has won nine straight against Philadelphia.
Marvin Bernard had four hits and two RBIs and Rich Aurilia drove
in three runs for the Giants. Armando Rios hit a two-run homer in
the eighth.
"Everything was contagious," said Bernard, who raised his
lifetime average at Veterans Stadium to .376. "Even Russ got in
on it.
"We were talking about this place before the game, everybody
seems to hit well here."
San Francisco's outburst was more than enough for Ortiz (10-10).
The right-hander allowed two runs and six hits in six innings
with four walks and five strikeouts. In his last five wins, the
Giants have outscored their opponents, 50-9.
"I don't know what it is lately, but we've been able to hit
double figures (in runs) a lot when I'm pitching," Ortiz said.
"That makes my job a lot easier."
San Francisco scored six runs in the first two innings to chase
Kent Bottenfield (1-2). The Giants had 12 runs on 16 hits through
five innings. And, it could have been worse as the team left 11
baserunners stranded during that span. After pitching his first
complete game of the season and first career shutout five days
earlier, Bottenfield lasted just two innings in his shortest
outing of the year.
"His feelings might be hurt, but Kent is OK," Phillies manager
Terry Francona said. "It just wasn't his night.
"We were in deep counts on every single hitter all night long."
