BALTIMORE 8, CHICAGO 5
CHICAGO (AP) - Ken Hill's debut for the Chicago White Sox was a
short one. He didn't give their beleaguered starting rotation the
lift it needed Thursday because he didn't make it past the third
inning.
Baltimore jumped on the veteran right-hander for six runs and
five hits in 2 1/3 innings and Brook Fordyce had three RBIs
against his former team as the Orioles beat the White Sox 8-5.
"Actually, I felt pretty good. The stuff was there, but I got
behind guys and that did me in," said Hill, making his first
start since Aug. 2, just before he was released by the Anaheim
Angels.
"It's been a while," he said. "I haven't been out there in three
weeks and it's a matter of getting comfortable."
Hill (5-8) was signed to a minor league contract by the White
Sox, whose pitching staff has two starters, Cal Eldred and Jon
Garland, on the disabled list while another, James Baldwin, has a
tired arm. Hill was added to the roster before Thursday's game
"I want to prove to these guys I can do what they got me for.
That's to help and that's what I want to do," said Hill, bothered
by an arthritic elbow and strained rib cage muscle.
Manager Jerry Manuel wouldn't commit to giving Hill another
start, saying his status would be discussed as the team made a
trip to Seattle for the start of a crucial six-game West Coast
trip.
Hill walked four Thursday and when he threw the ball over the
plate, it got hit.
"He had good velocity on his pitches. It was just
uncharacteristic for him to be erratic," Manuel said.
Fordyce, traded from the White Sox to the Orioles last month, hit
a two-run single and a sacrifice fly. Doing it against his former
team, he said, was no big deal.
"I just go out there and play," said Fordyce, who's had hits in
15 of his 19 games with the Orioles. "I just had some situations
where I could knock some runs in and it worked out. That's all it
was."
Jose Mercedes (9-5) allowed six hits in 6 2/3 innings. He held
the White Sox without a hit until Carlos Lee's one-out single in
the fifth.
Charles Johnson, traded to the White Sox in the deal that
included Fordyce, had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth.
It marked the first earned run allowed by rookie reliever Ryan
Kohlmeier, who had made 10 appearances spanning 12 innings.

CINCINNATI 8, PHILADELPHIA 3
CINCINNATI (AP) - The majors' first matchup of 14-game losers
since 1992 turned on little things instead of big hits. Omar Daal
and the Philadelphia Phillies did way too many of them wrong.
Daal stumbled on the bases, let a popup drop in front of him and
became the first 15-game loser in the majors as the Cincinnati
Reds beat the Phillies 8-3 Thursday.
Sean Casey had a pair of sacrifice flies off Daal (3-15) and the
Reds scored two more runs on grounders, overcoming a two-run
first inning off Steve Parris (8-14). An error made two of the
Reds' runs unearned and compounded Daal's woes.
Casey added a two-run homer in the eighth off Jason Boyd to seal
Daal's fate.
"Mentally I'm good," Daal said. "I've been in this game long
enough to know how it is. This is a bad year for me. Everybody
goes through it."
Tell Parris about it.
"Omar had 14 losses, I had 14 losses, so we were even going in,"
Parris said. "We're both having bad years, though I personally
don't feel I've pitched bad enough for 14 losses."
The Reds won for only the third time in 10 games and finished
another discouraging homestand at 3-4.
The last time two pitchers with at least 14 losses faced each
other was Oct. 1, 1992, when Milwaukee's Bill Wegman (12-14)
threw a 10-inning complete game to beat Seattle's Erik Hanson
(8-17) in the Kingdome 7-2.
Daal didn't get much help from a defense that turned 10 double
plays during the four-game series. Shortstop Alex Arias let
Benito Santiago's potential double-play grounder bounce off him
for an error in the third, setting up a pair of unearned runs.
Daal had a few misplays of his own. He and catcher Tom Prince
looked at each other while Dante Bichette's popup dropped between
them midway to the mound in the second inning for a single.
Daal also got thrown out at third to undercut a rally in the
fourth. He singled with one out and rounded second too far after
Bobby Abreu singled to center. Daal stood indecisively until
Brian Hunter threw into second, then stumbled as he belatedly
headed for an easy out at third.
Daal gave up eight hits and five runs -- three earned -- in six
innings. Parris, a victim of poor run support much of the season
(2.4 per game), gave up nine hits and two runs in 6 2/3 innings.

NEW YORK 8, TEXAS 7
NEW YORK (AP) - Glenallen Hill isn't just hitting home runs, he's
crushing the ball with Mark McGwire-like proficiency.
Just weeks after joining the New York Yankees, he's become their
biggest attraction, no easy feat on a team that's won three of
the last four World Series. Even teammates have altered their
routines.
"Everybody's looking at his at-bats. They don't want to miss
them," catcher Jorge Posada said after Hill homered for the 12th
time in 68 at-bats since joining the Yankees, a two-run drive
that helped New York beat the Texas Rangers 8-7 Thursday.
With 10 homers in August, Hill leads the American League. Not bad
for a guy who got just 233 at-bats with the Chicago Cubs before
the July 20 trade that sent him to the Yankees.
"He's incredible. It doesn't matter if it's a fastball, changeup
or whatever," said Andy Pettitte, who won his seventh straight
start. "He's making this ballpark look like Enron Field with the
Astros, or Coors Field."
Hill, who went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and extended his hitting
streak to 13 games, is hitting .429 since joining the Yankees and
has driven in 23 runs in 21 games.
Hill crushed a changeup from Matt Perisho (2-7) in the fourth
inning, and it ricocheted like a pool ball off the black front of
the bleachers.
"If I keep talking about it, I'm sure I'll go 0-for-30," Hill
said very quietly in the Yankees clubhouse as players dressed for
a six-game road trip.
Pettitte (16-6), second to Toronto's David Wells (18-5) in wins
among AL pitchers, is also living a charmed life. He allowed a
season-high seven runs -- five earned -- and 10 hits in six-plus
innings, but New York has backed him with seven or more runs in
15 of 25 starts, including seven in a row.
"You don't get too many wins when you give up seven runs," said
Pettitte, seeking his first 20-win season since 1996. "A couple
of years ago, I think I was down to the bottom of the league in
run support."
Perisho got hammered for eight runs -- his season high -- and
eight hits in three-plus innings, losing to Pettitte for the
second time in an 11-day span.
"I make a good pitch, I give up a single," Perisho said. "I make
a bad pitch, I give up a home run."
