CHICAGO 8, BALTIMORE 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Their starting rotation is hurting, so the Chicago
White Sox turned to the bullpen. Reliever Sean Lowe came off the
disabled list and made his first start of the season, lasting 4
1/3 innings. When he faltered, rookie Lorenzo Barcelo picked him
up.

Barcelo (1-1) allowed just two hits in 3 1/3 strong innings for
his first major league victory as the White Sox beat the
Baltimore Orioles, 8-4, Wednesday night.

"I wanted that first major league win, I was looking forward to
that," said Barcelo. "They told me that if Sean left the mound to
be ready and if something happens, you'll be in the game."

Lowe came off the DL where he'd been since Aug. 1 with an
inflamed right shoulder. When he was activated, Jon Garland went
on the DL, joining fellow starter Cal Eldred.

"I wasn't expecting to start. I just thought I would be
activated," Lowe said. "It was the best news I've had in a long
time. You always want to be out there and our hitters made it
easy."

Lowe made his first start since May 31, 1998 when he was with the
Cardinals and just the sixth of his major league career in 116
appearances, giving up five hits and three runs.

Baltimore hit four solo homers, three off Lowe, but the Orioles
made two big errors and their pitchers walked nine batters.

John Parrish (2-2), who beat Chicago six days ago at Camden Yards
despite walking eight, still couldn't find the plate Wednesday
night.

He walked five and committed a throwing error, giving up five
runs in 1 2/3 innings. He walked Ray Durham and Tony Graffanino
to start the first and after a double steal, Magglio Ordonez hit
a two-run double and Carlos Lee followed with an RBI single to
make it 3-0.

Paul Konerko singled in the second and made it to third when
Parrish picked up Chris Singleton's bunt and threw it into center
field. Charles Johnson walked to load the bases and after Durham
hit into a double play, Parrish walked Graffanino to reload the
bases.

Frank Thomas hit an RBI single and then Ordonez drew a
bases-loaded walk to finish Parrish and make it 5-0.

"We didn't pitch well," Baltimore manager Mike Hargrove said. "We
walked too many hitters. They swing the bats well, but we were
our own worst enemy. John's release point was all over the place
and the harder he tried, the worse it got."

CHICAGO 15, HOUSTON 5

HOUSTON (AP) - The last time Chicago's Ruben Quevedo and
Houston's Wade Miller took the mound, Quevedo was hit hard and
Miller pitched six hitless innings.

This time, Quevedo held the Astros hitless for 5 2/3 innings and
Miller was pounded for 12 runs as the Cubs stopped a seven-game
losing streak with a 15-5 victory Wednesday night.

"The difference was my location, I was able to throw for
strikes," Quevedo said. "Last time was just a bad start. That
game was over and I didn't think about it anymore. This just
proves that when you throw it where you want it you can pitch at
any level. I'm a young guy. I'm just learning how to pitch in the
big leagues."

Quevedo (2-5), making his eighth major league start, didn't allow
a hit until Julio Lugo's sixth-inning homer. The 21-year-old
right-hander wound up allowing five runs -- three earned -- and
four hits in eight innings. On Aug. 18, he allowed nine runs in
three innings against Arizona.

"The last outing I think he would rather forget," Chicago manager
Don Baylor. "But this outing he had good control and good
command."

The 12 runs off Miller (2-5) tied the Astros record set by Jose
Lima against the Cubs on April 26. Miller lasted 4 2/3 innings,
allowing 12 hits and eight earned runs. In his previous start,
Miller, who held Milwaukee hitless for six innings.

"I didn't have the control I had the last time," he said, "and
things got out of hand in a hurry."

Joe Girardi had four hits, Gary Matthews Jr. had three and Mark
Grace hit a three-run double as Chicago stopped a season-high,
seven-game losing streak. Rondell White had two hits and drove in
a run, making him 8-for-14 with five RBIs in the series.

"We stunk," Astros manager Larry Dierker said. "That guy wasn't
exactly Kevin Brown out there, but he had a no-hitter going in
the sixth inning."

Sammy Sosa put the Cubs ahead with an RBI single in the first,
then robbed Lugo of a home run in the bottom half with a leaping
catch against the right-field wall.

Houston, which tied its season high by making four errors, helped
Chicago with a pair of errors as the Cubs took a 6-0 lead: Jeff
Bagwell dropped a throw to first by shortstop Tim Bogar, and
catcher Mitch Meluskey made a throwing error.

"They got to Wade so fast I didn't have time to get anybody
warmed up," Dierker said. "We had four errors and we had a couple
more that probably have been scored errors. This was one we
weren't destined to win from the beginning."

NEW YORK 10, TEXAS 9

NEW YORK (AP) - After a wild eight innings left the Rangers and
Yankees tied at 9, a pair of potential double-play grounders --
one turned and one not -- decided a back-and-forth game.

Tino Martinez hit a game-winning single after Texas failed to
turn a double play in the ninth, and New York won 10-9 Wednesday
night after blowing a three-run lead in the eighth.

"This was a very big win for us," manager Joe Torre said. "To be
able to pull it out was a big emotional lift. Hopefully we'll be
able to carry it over until tomorrow."

Luis Polonia led off the ninth with a single against Tim Crabtree
(2-7) and went to second on Jose Vizcaino's single. Jose Canseco
hit into a fielder's choice, beating out a double play when Luis
Alicea's throw pulled Frank Catalanotto off the bag at first.

"I thought for sure we were going to win that game," Alicea said.
"But you can't give them that many outs. They'll make you pay."

Left-hander Mike Venafro came on, and Martinez grounded a single
just inside the first-base bag. The Yankees poured out of the
dugout in jubilation and the crowd that booed its team in the
eighth inning celebrated.

"We should have won it earlier," Martinez said. "It was good to
come back to win it for the bullpen and get them off the hook."

Mariano Rivera (7-3) escaped a shaky ninth for the win. With
runners on first and second, second baseman Vizcaino started a
neat double play, going to his knees to stop Gabe Kapler's
grounder up the middle. Rivera retired Pedro Valdes to get out of
the inning.

Jorge Posada, who made a key error in Texas' five-run eighth,
went 3-for-4 with a game-tying homer in the eighth and five RBIs.

The Yankees kept up their dominance of the Rangers, winning for
the 41st time in 54 games since losing Game 1 of the 1996
division series. The Yankees swept Texas out of the playoffs the
past two seasons.

The Rangers likely won't be making a return trip to the
postseason. Their 68th loss in 115 games already surpasses last
year's total by one. Texas gave up 17 hits and nine walks, and
allowed 10 or more runs for the 22nd time this season, breaking
the franchise record set in 1998.

"There's enough blame for all of us to go around," manager Johnny
Oates said. "There were some plays we didn't make, some plays we
didn't even get to. It's tough to win that way."

PHILADELPHIA 4, CINCINNATI 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Even when they do exactly what they want, the
Cincinnati Reds can't get the result they want. Mike Lieberthal's
eighth-inning homer started a three-run rally that swept the
Philadelphia Phillies over the Cincinnati Reds, 4-3, Wednesday
night.

The Phillies got consecutive wins for the first time since Aug.
8-9 by overcoming a 3-1 deficit against Scott Sullivan and
All-Star closer Danny Graves (10-4), who made good pitches that
got bad results.

"One inning you think we're right on top of things," Graves said.
"Then the next, everything hits the fan. It's just one of those
things."

Pinch-hitter Benito Santiago's bases-loaded single in the seventh
off Robert Person put the Reds up 3-1, but Lieberthal's 15th
homer, a drive off Sullivan, started the Phillies' comeback.

"He made a mistake and it kind of got things going," said
Lieberthal, who broke an 0-for-13 slump with his homer.

After Travis Lee singled, Graves came on looking to get a
double-play grounder with his sinker. He walked Rob Ducey and
then got Marlon Anderson to hit that hoped-for grounder up the
middle.

It went under Graves' glove and barely eluded diving shortstop
Barry Larkin, tying the game at 3. Tomas Perez hit another
grounder -- this one too soft for anything but a forceout at
second that allowed Ducey to score.

"If I could field the ground ball, we'd be all right," said
Graves, who blew a save for the fourth time in 25 chances. "I
thought I had it. I was down on both knees and had my glove down.
I can't explain it. They did exactly what I wanted them to do.
They hit it right back at me."

Chris Brock (7-6) retired the only batter he faced to close out
the seventh and get in line for the win. Vicente Padilla got two
outs for his first career save.

Before the game, Ken Griffey Jr. stopped Hall of Fame broadcaster
Marty Brennaman and took issue with his criticism. Brennaman
criticized Griffey on the air Sunday for jogging to first base on
a hit that could have been stretched to a double.

During their heated conversation, Brennaman said he'll continue
to point out when Griffey fails to hustle. Griffey went 0-for-4,
ending his eight-game hitting streak and dropping his average to
.257.

Griffey, for the second straight night, did not speak with
reporters after the game.
