CINCINNATI (AP) - The fans were still abuzz over Barry Larkin's
2,000th hit when Dmitri Young gave them a reason to marvel.
Larkin had a milestone double and Young hit an upper-deck grand
slam in the same inning Monday night as the Cincinnati Reds beat
the Philadelphia Phillies 7-4. Young's first career slam
highlighted a six-run third inning off Randy Wolf (9-7) that sent
the Reds to only their second victory in seven games.
Cincinnati had two franchise moments as it batted around for a
7-1 lead. Larkin, the team captain, lined a run-scoring double to
left for his 2,000th hit, then stood at second and waved as the
crowd of 21,558 gave a standing ovation and chanted his first
name.
"It was an emotional thing," Larkin said. "Maybe we fed off that.
It was loud the entire inning."
Larkin became the first major league shortstop to have at least
2,000 hits, 170 homers and 350 stolen bases. He's the fourth
player with 2,000 hits for Cincinnati, joining Pete Rose (3,358),
Dave Concepcion (2,326) and Johnny Bench (2,048).
After Wolf hit Ken Griffey Jr. on the arm with a pitch and walked
Dante Bichette, Young hit a first-pitch slider into the first row
of the upper deck in left -- the 34th red-seat homer in the
stadium's 30-year history.
"Unfortunately, I had to upstage the captain and his 2,000 hits,
and he told me about it in the dugout," said Young, who hadn't
hit a grand slam since high school.
The only other red-seat slam by a Reds player was the first ever
hit into the upper deck -- by Tony Perez on Aug. 11, 1970.
Young also had a single and a double in a free-swinging
performance, hitting the first pitch in each of his first three
at-bats. Young got an intentional walk in the seventh.
Wolf gave up seven runs and seven hits in three innings, matching
the shortest start of his career. He lasted only three innings in
a 10-2 loss at Houston on May 23. In his last three starts, Wolf
has given up 21 runs in 15 1/3 innings. The drubbing Monday left
him puzzled.
"I'd say the only mistake I made was on the pitch to Young," Wolf
said. "It was so frustrating because it seemed like every good
pitch I made, they got a hit on."
Pete Harnisch (5-6) struggled despite the big lead, giving up
nine hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings.
Tomas Perez had three doubles and drove in three runs for the
Phillies, who lost for the seventh time in eight games.

HOUSTON 5, CHICAGO 4
HOUSTON (AP) - What could have been a bad break for Scott Elarton
turned into a lucky bounce.
Elarton won his fifth straight decision and reliever Joe
Slusarski escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth inning Monday
night to give the Houston Astros a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs.
Sammy Sosa hit his major league-leading 43rd home run for the
Cubs, connecting for the fifth time in four games. Despite the
457-foot shot off the lights in left field, Chicago lost its
season-high sixth in a row.
"I was not even close to my good stuff," Elarton said. "I
couldn't throw it where I wanted to. I just had to battle through
it."
In the fifth inning, Elarton tried to field a sharply hit
grounder by Damon Buford. The ball glanced off Elarton's ring
finger and deflected into a double play.
"I was a little scared at first and I didn't want to even look at
it," Elarton said. "It swelled up real quickly. I thought I had
broken it, but it turned out to be just a bruise."
Elarton then struck out the next four batters as he retired eight
hitters in a row overall. Elarton (14-4) allowed three runs and
eight hits in eight innings and left with a 5-3 lead.
"It was a gutty performance," Astros manager Larry Dierker said.
"I knew he just didn't have it from the start. But he kept on
hanging in there and eventually he started throwing pretty well."
Octavio Dotel took over to start the ninth and walked the bases
loaded with no outs. Slusarski got Ricky Gutierrez to ground into
a double play, with one run scoring, and retired Mark Grace on a
fly ball to earn his second save.
"I know when we walk the bases loaded, bad things happen," Cubs
manager Don Baylor said. "We had our chances but we didn't get it
done."
Sosa's solo homer in the fifth made it 3-all. The shot tied for
the longest ever at Enron Field, matching Montreal's Andy Tracy.
"I was running the bases," Sosa said. "I really didn't watch it
go out. I have too much respect for the other team to watch it."
Richard Hidalgo hit his 32nd homer for Houston. Tony Eusebio
extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a third-inning
single.
Kevin Tapani (8-10) gave up five runs on six hits in six innings.

NEW YORK 12, TEXAS 3
NEW YORK (AP) - The biggest contributor to Orlando Hernandez's
first win in 1 1/2 months may have been Texas shortstop Royce
Clayton.
"They're like sharks. You give them a taste of blood, they come
after you," Rangers manager Johnny Oates said Monday after
Clayton's error led to six unearned runs in the third inning of
the New York Yankees' 12-3 win over Texas.
Clay Bellinger led off the inning with an infield single, Luis
Polonia walked and Derek Jeter hit a potential double-play
grounder to shortstop and Clayton bobbled the ball while trying
to throw to second. Texas was ahead 1-0 at the time.
"It's not a play that requires much effort," Clayton said.
Brian Sikorski (1-1) retired Paul O'Neill on a foulout and struck
out Glenallen Hill, then walked Tino Martinez on four pitches,
forcing in the tying run.
Jorge Posada hit a two-run single for a 3-1 lead, and Luis Sojo,
Scott Brosius and Bellinger followed with consecutive RBI
singles.
"I left a couple of pitches up to Posada. For some reason, I
didn't get the ball down," said Sikorski, who beat the Yankees
5-0 last Wednesday in his major league debut.
Posada capped the three-run fourth inning with his 23rd homer,
a two-run drive that made it 9-1. Sikorski allowed nine runs --
just three earned -- and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings, and also
made a throwing error. The difference between this game and last
Wednesday's?
"I think we saw the ball," Posada said. "That game in Texas, it
was a 5 o'clock start and it was tough to see the ball. Today I
think we took a little better approach because it wasn't the
first time we were facing him."
Hernandez (9-10), meanwhile, won his first decision in five
starts since beating the Mets on July 7. Hernandez, who has lost
four consecutive decisions for the first time in his major league
career, allowed three runs and six hits in seven innings.
"I've been saying for the last couple of outings, I feel good,"
he said. "Everyone hates to lose. It's good to win."
Jeter and Hill also homered for New York. Hill has 11 in 56
at-bats since joining the Yankees on July 20.
Rafael Palmeiro hit a solo homer, his 31st, and Rusty Greer hit
his sixth home run to account for the Rangers' first two runs.
The Yankees improved to 8-1 against Texas this year with their
11th win in their last 12 games against the Rangers, including
last year's playoffs.

TAMPA BAY 11, CHICAGO 4
CHICAGO (AP) - Gerald Williams became the 25th player in major
league history to hit 20 home runs from the leadoff spot. He
didn't care.
Williams hit a solo shot in the third inning Monday night as the
Tampa Bay Devil Rays beat the Chicago White Sox 11-4.
"I'm not disrespecting the game," said Williams, the 14th AL
player to accomplish the feat. "Win the World Series -- the other
things, that's not team-oriented."
He knows. He went to the World Series last season with Atlanta.
"There are a lot of guys who evaluate stats," said Williams, who
also hit an RBI single in the fifth. "I'm just a player who wants
to play."
Tanyon Sturtze (5-2), acquired from the White Sox on May 31, won
his third straight start. He allowed one run and five hits in
seven innings with six strikeouts and is 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA in
four starts since joining Tampa Bay.
Felix Martinez hit his second career home run, and Fred McGriff
and Bobby Smith each drove in three runs to lead the Devil Rays.
The White Sox, whose 74-51 record is the best in the AL, have
lost 5-of-9 and are 10-10 in August and 19-19 since the All-Star
break.
Jim Parque (10-5) lost for the third time in four decisions. He
gave up six runs -- three earned -- five hits and five walks in 4
2/3 innings.
"The worst part is I feel like I've let the entire team down, the
organization down," Parque said. "We needed a win today and they
were counting on me. I didn't do it."
White Sox manager Jerry Manuel, who has had to juggle his
rotation because of injuries, was asked if Parque had mechanical,
mental, physical or emotional problems?
"All of the above," Manuel said. "We can ill afford to have this
kind of performance continue."
Parque is 2-3 with a 5.67 ERA after the All-Star break and has
failed to complete five innings in two of his last three starts.
He has walked 17 batters in his last four starts after walking 16
in the previous 10 starts.
The Devil Rays have scored 23 runs in their last two games after
scoring 25 in the previous eight.
"We went through a little bit of a dry period for a while," Tampa
Bay manager Larry Rothschild said. "It's nice to get it going."
