ANAHEIM 5, NEW YORK 4

NEW YORK (AP) - The Anaheim Angels couldn't touch David Cone. But
Mo Vaughn was confident his team could come back against the New
York Yankees' bullpen.

Kevin Stocker blooped a tiebreaking single and the Angels, shut
out on two hits for six innings by Cone, rallied against the
Yankees' relievers for a 5-4 win Sunday.

Vaughn drew a leadoff walk to start a four-run seventh inning and
then doubled home an insurance run in the eighth.

On Friday night, Vaughn hit a tying, three-run homer with two
outs in the ninth in a game the Angels won in the 11th.

"This is not how you like to do it, but you have to keep plugging
away," Vaughn said. "We've got a lot of young starting pitchers,
and sometimes you're going to get behind. You have to keep
playing."

The Angels erased a late 3-0 deficit, prompting booing from the
crowd of 50,048 on Whitey Ford Day. No doubt, many fans wanted to
see Cone continue.

"I made the decision and I was happy with the six innings and
turned it over to the bullpen," Yankees manager Joe Torre said.
"We didn't do it today or the other night. It was a tough
weekend."

Said Cone: "If you're asking if I wanted to stay in the game, the
answer is yes. I tried to lobby to stay in the game."

Tim Salmon hit a two-run homer and Adam Kennedy and Stocker had
RBI singles as the Angels scored four times in the seventh
against Mike Stanton, Jeff Nelson and Randy Choate for a 4-3
lead. Vaughn hit an RBI double in the eighth off Dwight Gooden.

"This team doesn't quit," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.
"They've got a tremendous bullpen over there. Teams don't get to
them very often, let alone twice in a series."

Matt Wise (2-1), who beat David Wells in Toronto last Tuesday for
his first major league victory, gave up three runs in six
innings.

Shigetoshi Hasegawa pitched the ninth for his sixth save. He has
not allowed a run in 23 straight innings, spanning 14
appearances. He got Paul O'Neill to fly out with two runners on
to preserve the win.

Cone turned in his third straight strong performance, giving up
just two singles to Orlando Palmeiro and a walk. He struck out
the side to start the game and fanned six overall, retired the
first nine batters and did not permit a runner past second base.

Stanton walked Vaughn to start the seventh and Salmon hit his
28th homer. Nelson (7-3) took over with one out and walked Troy
Glaus. Glaus stole second and Kennedy hit a tying single with two
outs.

MILWAUKEE 6, HOUSTON 5

HOUSTON (AP) - The Milwaukee Brewers had such an odd winning
rally that even they weren't sure how they won the game.

Henry Blanco doubled in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning as
the Milwaukee Brewers snapped the Houston Astros' six-game
winning streak with a 6-5 win Sunday.

Charlie Hayes singled with one out in the ninth off Wayne
Franklin, who was relieved by Jose Cabrera (2-3). Rafael Belliard
followed with a grounder between first and second. The ball hit
Hayes, who was ruled out on the play, and Belliard reached on a
single.

"I thought the baseball gods were against us then," Brewers
manager Davey Lopes said. "When (Hayes) got hit, I was about to
blow my brains out. I thought somebody doesn't want us to win
this game."

Blanco, who went 3-for-5, then doubled to right center to score
Belliard with the go-ahead run. Hitting just .226, he was just
glad Lopes didn't pinch hit for him.

"I was ready to go," Blanco said. "It made me feel good that he
didn't pinch hit in that situation."

"That was a big hit by Henry," Lopes said. "He had a good day at
the plate. That was probably his best day offensively. His hits
were big."

Curtis Leskanic (4-3) pitched two hitless innings for the win.

"When I came in the clubhouse somebody asked me how we won and I
said, 'I don't know,'" Lopes said.

Neither did the rest of the Brewers.

"It was just a freak play and it kept us from having men on first
and third," Milwaukee's Geoff Jenkins said. "If they had ended up
winning, it would have really been lousy."

Manager Larry Dierker criticized his defense which allowed one
run on an error Bill Spiers error in the fifth inning. Center
fielder Richard Hidalgo also bobbled Blanco's double momentarily
or he might have had a close play at home on Belliard.

"If we had made the plays defensively, we still could have won
the game," Dierker said. "If you have to use your relief pitchers
every day, you can't expect them to be sharp."

Jeff Bagwell hit his 38th homer and ninth in the past 10 games
for Houston. Hidalgo added his 31st homer, a solo shot in the
second inning.

Geoff Jenkins tied his career high with four hits for Milwaukee.
He had an RBI double in the third and a run-scoring single in the
sixth.

Trailing 4-2 in the seventh, Houston scored three runs to take
the lead.

PHILADELPHIA 6, ST. LOUIS 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Kent Bottenfield looked like the 18-game winner
the St. Louis Cardinals traded to get Jim Edmonds instead of the
struggling pitcher he's been since leaving town.

Facing his former team for the first time, Bottenfield threw a
five-hitter for his first career shutout in the Philadelphia
Phillies' 6-0 victory Sunday.

"I'd like to say it was a lot of fun," Bottenfield said. "It's a
lot of fun now. It was pretty stressful from the time I stepped
on the field until now."

Bottenfield (1-0), traded to Anaheim in the Edmonds deal in
spring training, struck out five and walked four as the Phillies
snapped their season-worst six-game losing streak. He won for the
first time in four starts since being traded from Anaheim to
Philadelphia. Bottenfield's only other complete game came Aug.
10, 1993, against Los Angeles.

His last shutout came with Triple-A Toledo in 1995, although
Bottenfield joked that it was in high school.

"You'll take one anytime in this league," Bottenfield said. "But
it was nice to know I could overcome emotion and put it aside
finally and just pitch my game. I think the outcome was proof
that I did a pretty decent job of that."

His former manager didn't hold back the compliments.

"We saw him win 18 games, so he pitched like that for us, too,"
Tony La Russa said. "We knew what we were up against."

Bottenfield, 18-7 for the Cardinals last year, was 7-8 with a
5.71 ERA with Anaheim.

The Phillies were outscored 47-26 during their losing streak, the
team's longest since they dropped seven in a row from July
30-Aug. 5, 1998. They're 8-23 against the first-place teams in
the NL and finished 2-7 against the Central Division-leading
Cardinals.

They're 7-17 since former ace Curt Schilling was traded to
Arizona.

Pat Burrell and Mike Lieberthal had two-run doubles in the first
and second and Bobby Abreu, who reached base his first four
trips, had a two-run single in the fifth. Burrell's double came
with the bases loaded, making him 7-for-8 in that situation with
three homers and 19 RBIs.

Rookie Britt Reames, who replaced the injured Andy Benes in the
rotation, threw 100 pitches in four innings for the Cardinals in
his major league debut. Reames (0-1) allowed four runs, four hits
and six walks with five strikeouts.

Benes, on the disabled list with cartilage damage in his right
knee, missed the first turn by a Cardinals starter all season.

TAMPA BAY 12, CHICAGO 11

CHICAGO (AP) - The Tampa Bay Devil Rays barely survived a long,
wild day against the Chicago White Sox. Jason Tyner's RBI double
in the ninth inning capped Tampa Bay's rally from a four-run
deficit and gave the Devil Rays a 12-11 win over the Chicago
White Sox on Sunday.

"We needed that, especially after the beginning of the game,"
said Roberto Hernandez, who survived a scary ninth to pick up his
22nd save in 28 chances. "You can't give an inch to (the White
Sox). They'll take a yard."

The Devil Rays, who led 6-2 before battling back from a 10-6
hole, tied the game at 11 when Bobby Smith led off the ninth
inning against Keith Foulke (3-1) with his fourth homer.

"Bad pitch and I got hurt," Foulke said.

Aubrey Huff followed with a single. Pinch-runner Felix Martinez
advanced to second on a sacrifice and scored on Tyner's double to
the gap in left center. Foulke blew his fifth save in 27 chances.

Smith made a key defensive play came with two on and two out in
the bottom of the ninth. He knocked down Frank Thomas' single
behind second base to load the bases for Magglio Ordonez.
Hernandez then took advantage of the late afternoon sun and
shadows to strike out Ordonez and end the game.

"As a defensive player, I always think I can get everything,"
said Smith, playing his second game since being activated from
the DL. "(Thomas) hit it pretty hard but I was able to knock it
down."

Hernandez's duel with Ordonez was another key as the White Sox
outfielder fouled off 10 pitches.

"I don't know if it was a classic ninth inning but it got the job
done," Hernandez said. "I think my teammates were a little more
nervous than I was."

With the game tied at 10 in the eighth, Jose Valentin and Frank
Thomas each drew walks against Esteban Yan (6-8). Valentin scored
on a wild pitch by Yan to give the White Sox an 11-10 lead.

Greg Vaughn and Steve Cox drove in three runs apiece, and Mike
DiFelice hit a solo homer for Tampa Bay.

Valentin went 3-for-4 with four runs and three RBIs, Ordonez
drove in three runs and Herbert Perry hit a three-run homer for
Chicago, which had won six of nine.

The White Sox took a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI singles by
Valentin and Ordonez.

The Devil Rays then scored six runs in the second off Rocky
Biddle, highlighted by Cox's three-run double. Tyner had a
sacrifice fly, and Vaughn and Ozzie Guillen had RBI singles in
the inning.
