CHICAGO 7, TAMPA BAY 0

CHICAGO (AP) - The sellout crowd of 38,926 at Comiskey Park
chanted "M-V-P, M-V-P" after Frank Thomas hit his AL-leading 38th
homer. The Big Hurt didn't oblige them with a curtain call.

"I'm not a ham like that. I always respect my opponents," Thomas
said. "It's about winning for me."

Thomas is doing everything he can to help the Chicago White Sox
win. He homered, doubled and drove in four runs as Mike Sirotka
and the White Sox beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 7-0 Saturday
night.

"To see Frank day in and day out, he's the best right-handed
hitter I've ever seen," White Sox manager Jerry Manuel said.

"Tell Jerry thanks," Thomas said. "He's seen me work overtime.
There's no shortcut to success. Things are working out for me."

Sirotka (11-10) combined with three relievers on a three-hitter
as the White Sox won for the sixth time in nine games.

"The mindset I had was make them hit my pitch," said Sirotka, who
was pulled after 100 pitches.

"He had better command of all his pitches," Manuel said. "It was
a good performance. When he does get in a groove, he stays in it
for a long period of time."

Magglio Ordonez reached 100 RBIs for the second consecutive
season, and fifth time by a White Sox right fielder. He singled
home a run in the first. Thomas hit a three-run homer in the
seventh inning, leaving him three shy of his career high set in
1993.

Thomas also doubled home a run in the third. He has 115 RBIs,
three behind league leader Edgar Martinez of Seattle.

"All I can do is tip my cap to Thomas," said losing pitcher Albie
Lopez. "I went out and did what I have to do."

Sirotka won for the second time in his last six starts, giving up
three hits and five walks and striking out two in six innings.
Bill Simas, Kelly Wunsch and Lorenzo Barcelo each pitched one
inning of relief.

Lopez (10-9), who was coming off back-to-back complete-game wins,
gave up seven runs -- six earned -- on 10 hits and two walks over
6 2/3 innings.

"Albie wasn't as good as he's been but he had good stuff," Tampa
Bay manager Larry Rothschild said. "A lot of those balls weren't
hit hard. Thomas hit the ball hard."

Ray Durham singled to lead off the Chicago first, advanced on
Jose Valentin's bunt single and scored one out later on Ordonez's
single. Thomas hit a double with two outs in the third to score
Valentin, who had singled.

HOUSTON 10, MILWAUKEE 8

HOUSTON (AP) - Jeff Bagwell made No. 300 a meaningful one.
Bagwell homered twice, becoming the first Houston player to reach
300 in a career, and drove in five runs Saturday night as the
Astros beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 10-8.

"This means a lot. I never thought I'd hit one major league home
run, much less 300. To win the game and get 300 at the same time
is really special," Bagwell said.

Bagwell hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the eighth inning.
Julio Lugo walked with two outs and Bagwell connected against
Juan Acevedo (2-5) for his 37th home run.

"I knew I was within two before the game," Bagwell said. "So I
was kind of thinking about it the batting circle. I thought it
would be a nice way to win the game with my 300th home run."

Houston Manager Larry Dierker recognized the drama of the home
run.

"That was the most dramatic one he's hit this year," Dierker
said. "In view of the milestone maybe it's his most dramatic
ever."

Bagwell has 102 RBIs, the fifth straight year he's had at least
100 RBIs. All 300 of his lifetime home runs have come for
Houston.

Bagwell has earned the respect of Milwaukee manager Davey Lopes.

"This is the fifth or sixth year that he's been one of the
dominant players not only in this division, but in the league,"
Lopes said. "He just doesn't get the publicity that the guys who
hit 60 or 70 home runs get."

The Astros won their season-high sixth in a row. Bagwell has six
home runs in his last six games, and a 17-game hitting streak.

Jose Cabrera (2-2) pitched two scoreless innings, striking out
three. Octavio Dotel pitched the ninth for his ninth save in 11
chances.

Moises Alou scored on a single by Chris Truby in the Houston
sixth, and Mitch Meluskey hit an RBI single in the seventh that
made it 8-all.

Milwaukee scored five times in the fifth to take an 8-6 lead.
Jeromy Burnitz singled, Charlie Hayes reached on a catcher's
interference call and both runners advanced on a wild pitch by
Chris Holt.

Ron Belliard hit an RBI single, Henry Blanco doubled home a run,
James Mouton hit a two-run triple and Mark Loretta added an RBI
single.

Burnitz hit a three-run homer, his 24th, in the first. Bagwell
hit a three-run homer to cap Houston's six-run second.

NEW YORK 9, ANAHEIM 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Joe Torre feels the pulse of his team well enough
to know that even one of the most difficult losses during his
tenure in New York wouldn't have any carry-over effect.

David Justice homered twice and the Yankees backed Andy
Pettitte's five-hitter with a record-tying three sacrifice flies
in the third inning of a 9-1 win Saturday over the Anaheim
Angels.

"It doesn't surprise me," Torre said of his team's resiliency
after blowing a five-run lead in the ninth inning Friday. "No
question, the loss last night made it very tough for us to go to
sleep. But we have a lot of confidence."

The Yankees lost at home after leading by at least five runs in
the ninth for only the second time in franchise history.
Anaheim's 9-8 win -- sparked by Darin Erstad's game-saving catch
in the 10th and game-winning homer in the 11th -- was quickly
forgotten as New York scored four runs in the first of Brian
Cooper (4-8).

"That was tough for us to take last night," Pettitte said. "Guys
were still talking about it today. I wanted to go out and get
three quick outs and hoped we would get on the board."

Pettitte (15-6) walked three and struck out six to win his
career-high sixth straight start. The left-hander pitched his
17th career complete game and moved into a tie for second in the
majors for wins -- two behind Toronto's David Wells.

"I'm in a good groove," Pettitte said. "I feel great right now."

The Yankees are an AL-best 29-16 since July 1 to match their
season-high mark of 15 games over .500. Pettitte and an offense
boosted by the additions of Justice, Glenallen Hill and Jose
Canseco have provided much of the difference. After struggling
offensively much of the first half, New York leads the majors
with 229 runs since the All-Star break.

Cooper, recalled from Triple-A Edmonton before the game, gave up
a two-run homer to Luis Sojo and RBI singles to Jorge Posada and
Scott Brosius in the first. Cooper gave up eight runs -- six
earned -- and eight hits in four innings as he lost his fifth
straight start.

"You get into a deficit that big it's tough for an offense to
come back," Anaheim's Mo Vaughn said. "You look up in the third
or fourth inning and its 7-0. You know it's going to be a tough
day, especially with Pettitte pitching the way he was throwing."

Troy Glaus' 36th homer in the eighth was the only run for the
Angels. It was the club-record 193rd homer of the season for
Anaheim.

ST. LOUIS 6, PHILADELPHIA 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) - On a night when he didn't have his best stuff,
Pat Hentgen said he appreciated some clutch support by his
teammates.

"I was lucky tonight," Hentgen said after pitching five innings
and getting the victory in the St. Louis Cardinals' 6-3 win over
the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night.

Hentgen (12-9) allowed one run in the first inning after warming
up twice when the start of the game was delayed by rain for 1:21.

"The rest of the guys could tell I was grinding and I was
battling," Hentgen said. "When you have an outing like that,
you're fortunate to come out with a win," he said.

The Cardinals scored three times in the first. Fernando Vina led
off with a single to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, Edgar
Renteria walked and both runners scored on a double by Shawon
Dunston.

Dunston, who was 5-for-8 lifetime against Omar Daal coming into
the game, scored on a single by Eric Davis to make it 3-1.

Hentgen gave up one run and four hits and worked around five
walks.

"I made 95 pitches in five innings and that was wearing me down,"
he said.

The Phillies have lost six straight, their longest skid since
they dropped six in a row in July 1998. The Cardinals have won
seven of their last nine.

"The season is not over," Phillies manager Terry Francona said.
"Tomorrow, we'll try our best best to do better. A lot of people
are having fun at our expense. And for that, I feel bad for the
players."

Three relievers finished up for the Cardinals. Mike Timlin gave
up a two-run homer to Doug Glanville in the ninth.

Daal (3-14) allowed six runs and nine hits in seven innings,
striking out nine. He is 1-4 since the Phillies acquired him in a
trade for Curt Schilling.

Daal said that except for the home run hit by Renteria, he
pitched a good game.

"I hung one pitch and he got all of it. That's the way this game
goes," he said.

Renteria hit his 14th homer in the seventh after walks to Placido
Polanco and Vina.

The Phillies scored in the first on a single by Bobby Abreu, a
walk to Mike Lieberthal and a two-out single by Travis Lee.
