ANAHEIM 9, NEW YORK 8 (11)
NEW YORK (AP) - Roger Clemens called it one of the greatest
catches he's ever seen. Mike Scioscia simply said it was
incredible.
Darin Erstad had trouble describing his spectacular, game-saving
grab in the 10th inning.
"It was just one of those things," said Erstad, who followed his
highlight-reel grab with a game-winning homer in the 11th inning
of the Anaheim Angels' 9-8 win over the New York Yankees on
Friday night. "You just react and let your ability take over."
Erstad took over a game that appeared lost to the Angels when
they entered the ninth trailing 8-3 to Clemens. But Mo Vaughn's
three-run homer capped an amazing rally that was only
overshadowed by Erstad's extra-inning brilliance.
The Yankees appeared to have won the game in the 10th before
Erstad took it right from them. With runners on second and third
and two outs, Jorge Posada was at the plate. With two strikes,
Erstad took a few steps in and toward the foul line to guard
against a bloop hit. That only made the play even more difficult
when Posada hit a drive to the gap in left-center that should
have ended the game.
"I thought it split the gap when he hit it," Scioscia said. "All
I can say is incredible."
Erstad got a good break, and made a full-extension dive, catching
the ball after it appeared to have gone past him for a
game-winning hit.
"Posada smoked that ball," Erstad said. "I've taken some pretty
interesting routes on the ball this season. But I took a good
route on that one."
With one out in the 11th, Erstad hit a high fly off Mike Stanton
(2-2) that just cleared the right-field wall for his 21st homer
and major league-leading 189th hit.
"I don't know what was better, his offense or defense," Vaughn
said.
It was the first time in 12 years the Yankees wasted a five-run,
ninth-inning lead, since Detroit overcame a 6-1 deficit to win
7-6 on June 21, 1988.
Shigetoshi Hasegawa (8-2) pitched three innings of one-hit ball
for the win, extending his scoreless streak to 22 innings.
Glenallen Hill homered twice for the Yankees, who were 138-4 when
leading after eight innings the past two seasons.

CHICAGO 5, TAMPA BAY 2
CHICAGO (AP) - Rookie Jon Garland was lucky. The Chicago White
Sox were luckier.
Garland survived a line drive that struck his right arm near his
elbow to win for the first time in four starts Friday night,
leading the White Sox to a 5-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil
Rays.
The White Sox, who have been relying on rookie starters, signed
just-released veteran Ken Hill on Friday to bolster their
rotation. With Cal Eldred still sidelined indefinitely and James
Baldwin resting a tired arm, Chicago could not afford to lose
another starter.
"It's just a bruise, basically on the forearm near the elbow but
not the elbow," manager Jerry Manuel said. "Obviously, the way he
reacted was scary to see. A lot of things went through his head,
like shock."
Garland (3-4) was struck in the sixth inning by Fred McGriff's
line drive and fell to the ground immediately, clutching his arm.
X-rays were negative and the team said he sustained a bruise. His
status was day-to-day.
"I looked and wasn't sure if he broke something, but they said
it's just a bruise," McGriff said. "The guy's got a lot of
talent, so hopefully he can continue to pitch."
Garland gave up one run on a solo homer by Gerald Williams, four
hits and one walk in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out four.
Jose Valentin and Chris Singleton each hit two-run homers and
Carlos Lee added a solo shot for the White Sox, who won for the
fifth time in eight games. Valentin set a club record for homers
by a shortstop, hitting his 21st in the first inning to break the
old mark of 20 set in 1964 by Ron Hansen. Singleton hit his ninth
homer in the fifth, and both blasts came after failed bunt
attempts.
"When you're getting 20 homers from your shortstop, you can't
help but have a good year as a team," McGriff said. "Jose's home
run was huge. Things are just going right for them."
Lee led off the bottom of the seventh with his 21st home run.
"Ball's juiced, bat's juiced, fans are juiced," said loser Bryan
Rekar (4-8), a native of Oak Lawn, Ill., a Chicago suburb, who
had about 70 family and friends on hand.
Rekar gave up five runs on eight hits and one walk in seven
innings. He struck out four.
Chicago's Mark Buehrle pitched one inning of relief, Bob Howry
went 1 1/3 innings and Keith Foulke worked the ninth for his 22nd
save in 26 opportunities.

HOUSTON 5, MILWAUKEE 4
HOUSTON (AP) - Wade Miller admits he was getting a little tired
in the seventh inning, and Astros manager Larry Dierker knows
why.
"It didn't really look like a pitcher pitching a no-hitter,"
Astros manager Larry Dierker said after Miller took a no-hit bid
into the seventh and Houston hung on to beat the Milwaukee
Brewers 5-4 Friday night. "He was scattering it around and wasn't
ahead in the count much.
Geoff Jenkins' leadoff homer in the seventh was the first hit off
Miller (2-4), a drive off the screen on the right-field foul
pole.
"I guess I did get tired in the seventh," said Miller, who threw
115 pitches and was removed later in the inning. "I didn't
realize I had that many pitches. I think I had a lot of 10-pitch
at bats."
In the first six innings, Miller struck out five and allowed only
three runners: two on walks and one on an error. He retired 11 in
a row from the second through the fifth innings. But he couldn't
get anyone out in the seventh, leaving after the home run, two
singles and a walk.
Miller, who won for the first time in five starts since July 22,
wound up allowing two runs and three his in six-plus innings. He
has gone eight innings only once in 13 starts.
"When you get ahead on the count, nine times out of 10 you're
going to get guys out," said Charlie Hayes, who got one of the
hits off Miller. "When he was ahead in the count, he got us out.
Toward the end, he wasn't getting ahead and that's when we
scored."
Brewers manager Davey Lopes said his team partly caused Miller's
success.
"He had a good fastball but not an overpowering one," Lopes said.
"He didn't use hardly any breaking balls. He had a high pitch
count and it would have been more if we had been more
disciplined."
Octavio Dotel got six outs for his eighth save in 10 chances as
the Astros matched their longest winning streak of the season at
five. Roger Cedeno, playing for the first time in 75 games since
breaking his hand May 26, was 3-for-5 with three runs and one
RBI.
Jimmy Haynes (10-11) allowed three runs and eight hits in five
innings, dropping to 1-4 in seven starts since the All-Star
break. The Brewers, who got just six hits, had won their previous
three games.

ST. LOUIS 7, PHILADELPHIA 6
ST. LOUIS (AP) - After the St. Louis Cardinals climbed back from
a six-run deficit to tie the game, Carlos Hernandez figured his
job was easy. Hernandez's run-scoring single in the ninth capped
the comeback in a 7-6 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on
Friday night.
"I had a feeling," said Hernandez, who's 7-for-24 with four RBIs
since joining the Cardinals at the trade deadline. "When we tied
this game, I knew we were going to take it. It's a great attitude
we've got."
Philadelphia, which has lost five straight, led 6-0 in the sixth.
Phillies pitchers walked 12, including six in five shutout
innings by starter Robert Person, and relievers walked two
batters with the bases loaded in a three-run seventh.
"I don't think we're a very confident group right now," Phillies
manager Terry Francona said. "It tears your insides out when you
outplay a team and end up losing."
Fernando Tatis doubled off Wayne Gomes and scored on Edgar
Renteria's groundout in the sixth for the first Cardinals' run.
Jim Edmonds and Tatis each walked with the bases loaded in the
Cardinals' four-walk seventh, with Ray Lankford adding a
sacrifice fly.
J.D. Drew, who walked his first four times up, tied it with a
two-run single in the eighth off Vicente Padilla. His hit, which
followed a fielding error by third baseman Scott Rolen and a
walk, was the first by the Cardinals in 10 at-bats with runners
in scoring position.
Chris Brock (6-6) walked Lankford with one out in the ninth,
pinch-hitter Eric Davis singled and Hernandez hit an 0-2 pitch
over left fielder Kevin Sefcik, who was playing in.
Hernandez said all three pitches were high fastballs.
"The third one, I was right on it," he said. "He did me a big
favor."
Brock said he was trying to strike out Hernandez.
"I threw the pitch I wanted to throw," Brock said. "Obviously, it
wasn't high enough."
Hernandez knew he had the game-winner as soon as he got the ball
in the air.
"If he catches that ball, we score anyway," Hernandez said. "My
first reaction was, game over."
Jason Christiansen (3-8) got the last two outs in the ninth as
the NL Central leaders won their third straight and fifth in six
games. It was the Cardinals' third win in 47 games when trailing
after seven innings.
