BRAVES AGREE ON SIX-YEAR EXTENSION WITH CHIPPER JONES
ATLANTA (AP) - Finally announcing a deal that had been rumored
for weeks, NL MVP Chipper Jones and the Atlanta Braves agreed
Thursday on a six-year contract said to be worth $90 million.
Jones, 28, had been eligible to become a free agent after this
season. He has played his entire career in Atlanta after being
selected by the Braves with the first pick of the 1990 amateur
draft. The deal, which contains two club options that could make
it worth $120 million for eight seasons, would be the
fourth-richest package in baseball, trailing only Cincinnati
outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. ($116.5 million for nine years) Los
Angeles pitcher Kevin Brown ($105 million for seven years) and
New York Mets catcher Mike Piazza ($91 million for seven years).
Last year, he became the first major-leaguer to hit .300 (.319)
with 100 runs (116), 40 doubles (41), 40 homers (45), 100 RBIs
(110), 100 walks (126) and 20 stolen bases (25).

ORIOLES' WIN OVER WHITE SOX A BIG HIT
(AP) - John Parrish walked eight batters, and after the game
everyone was talking about the erratic pitching of the other guy.
That's because James Baldwin tied an AL record by hitting four
batters with pitches. Jeff Conine homered to back an effective
but uneven performance by Parrish, and the Baltimore Orioles took
advantage of Baldwin's uncharacteristic wildness Thursday in a
5-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Baldwin, who was unbeaten
in six starts since July 8, had hit only two batters in 154
innings. But he plunked two in the third inning, one in the fifth
and another in the sixth. "I've never hit that many guys in one
game. I just lost control out there today," he said. Jerry
Hairston, who was hit twice, chased Baldwin with a two-run single
in the sixth that put Baltimore up 5-1. Conine led off the inning
with his 11th homer, the first since June 29.
EXTRA BASES
In other AL action, Boston had plenty of offense but little to
show for it. Then Mike Lansing entered the game in the eighth
inning. His pinch-hit double drove in two runs, then he won the
game and sent the fans into a frenzy with another two-run double
in the ninth as the Red Sox beat Texas, 8-7. Boston had plenty of
chances earlier but stranded runners in scoring position in each
of the first seven innings and left 13 men on through eight. Then
manager Jimy Williams went to his bench, and for the second
straight night, it gave the Red Sox a win. Denny Neagle scattered
nine hits in 6 2/3 innings, and Glenallen Hill, David Justice and
Luis Sojo homered to lead the New York Yankees over Anaheim, 6-1.
Elsewhere, despite three strikeouts, for Twin David McCarty drove
in two runs and scored another to lead Kansas City over
Minnesota, 8-4.
In the NL, Barry Bonds hit his 36th homer and Bobby Estalella hit
a three-run homer to lead San Francisco over Montreal, 5-4, for a
three-game sweep. Shawn Estes won his seventh straight decision,
allowing three runs and five hits in 7 1/3 inning with six
strikeouts and three walks. The Giants have won four straight
after losing the first three games of their road trip against the
New York Mets. San Francisco leads second-place Arizona by 1 1/2
games in the NL West. Elsewhere, Turk Wendell struck out a
career-high six in four innings, his longest relief appearance
since September 1997, while Todd Zeile, Benny Agbayani, Robin
Ventura and Mike Bordick each homered as the Mets ripped
Colorado, 13-2. Ventura, Zeile and Bordick each had three RBIs
for New York. The Rockies' Todd Helton was 1-for 2 with a walk,
raising his major league-leading average to .397.
METS' HAMPTON LEAVES GAME WITH BROKEN RIB
NEW YORK (AP) - Mike Hampton left the New York Mets' game against
the Colorado Rockies in the third inning Thursday with a broken
rib. The Mets said X-rays revealed the small stress fracture on
the right side and said Hampton was day to day. "I cringed when I
saw him come out," Mets manager Bobby Valentine said. "We are
optimistic that he'll be OK." Hampton grounded out for the final
out of the third and opened with fourth by walking Todd Helton on
a 3-1 count. Hampton threw a ball to Jeffrey Hammonds, and Mets
pitching coaching Dave Wallace and the team's training staff went
to the mound. Hampton then left the game. Hampton, 12-7, has won
his last four decisions. The left-hander, acquired from Houston
in December, was making his 26th start. Hampton allowed two hits
and struck out four as the Mets built a 5-0 lead. He threw 40
pitches, 24 for strikes. The Mets easily topped the Rockies,
13-2.
ELBOW IMPROVES FOR YANKEES' KNOBLAUCH
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Chuck Knoblauch's sore right elbow is showing
signs of improvement. "It's getting better," the New York Yankees
second baseman said Thursday after working out at the team's
development center. "I've thrown some and haven't had any bad
reactions. It's going good." Knoblauch's right elbow has bothered
him for the past month. An MRI in early August confirmed an
earlier diagnosis that Knoblauch has tendinitis and inflammation
in the elbow. He is eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list
Friday. "I don't know how many more days," Knoblauch said.
"That's a little bit up to me, but it's up to these guys to give
me the go ahead." Knoblauch, who said he will be back this
season, fielded grounders, took batting practice and had a
throwing session.

ARBITRATOR TO HEAR BELTRAN CASE STARTING AUG. 23
NEW YORK (AP) - The players' association filed a default notice
against the Kansas City Royals for failing to give reigning AL
Rookie of the Year Carlos Beltran a full paycheck, and the
grievance was scheduled to be heard starting Aug. 23. Lawyers for
the union and the commissioner's office agreed to the date
Thursday. Shyam Das, baseball's independent arbitrator, will hear
arguments Aug. 23-24 in Kansas City, Mo. The union filed a
grievance last Friday, a day after Beltran was suspended without
pay for refusing to report to Royals' Florida training complex
for rehabilitation. The team said the suspension would last for
30 days or until he reports, whichever is shorter. Beltran makes
$350,000 this season, and each day of the suspension would cost
him $1,923. Kansas City said it has the right to decide Beltran's
medical treatment, citing a provision in each player's contract.

TWINS WILL PITCH CASE FOR OUTDOOR BASEBALL ON TUESDAY
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The Minnesota Twins will learn Tuesday whether
they have the go-ahead from the Metrodome to play some games
outdoors next month. The Twins wanted the Metropolitan Sports
Facilities Commission to meet before then. But the state's open
meetings law doesn't allow it, said Bill Lester, executive
director of the commission, which owns and operates the dome,
home to the Twins and Vikings since 1982. Lester said a meeting
to vote yes or no on the proposal was set for Tuesday at the
commission's offices inside the Metrodome. The proposal is
designed to drum up public support for a new outdoor ballpark for
the Twins. Even if the Twins receive consent from the commission,
they face major barriers in getting their wish to play the Sept.
18-20 series against Texas at a temporary 25,000-seat ballpark
that would be erected near the Mall of America.

SWEEP LEAVES CLEVELAND TIRED, INDIANS REELING
CLEVELAND (AP) - It was nearly 2:30 a.m. ET Thursday by the time
the Oakland Athletics rallied for three runs in the ninth inning
to beat the Cleveland Indians and sweep a crucial three-game
series. Many Indians fans had gone to bed long before the A's
mounted their comeback from a 5-1 deficit. The Indians didn't
return from their six-game West Coast road trip until 8:30 a.m.,
and adding insult to injury, the team's bus got caught up in
morning rush-hour traffic as it approached downtown Cleveland.
These days the wild-card standings are just as congested. After
taking 2-of-3 games in Seattle, the Indians were swept in
Oakland, going 2-4 on the important trip. Cleveland is three
games behind the A's in the wild-card race, and the Indians are
behind Boston, too, in the battle for the final playoff spot. And
right behind the Indians are the Anaheim Angels and Toronto Blue
Jays.

STRAWBERRY RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL
NEW YORK (AP) - New York Yankees outfielder Darryl Strawberry was
released from Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center on Wednesday,
nine days after a second round of surgery for cancer. On Aug. 7,
doctors removed an "isolated tumor mass" near Strawberry's left
kidney. He previously underwent surgery for colon cancer in
October 1998. Strawberry, 38, was suspended in February for
testing positive for drugs and had hoped to have his suspension
reduced and rejoin the Yankees this season.
ASTROS RELIEVER POWELL RETURNS TO DL
HOUSTON (AP) - The Houston Astros placed pitcher Jay Powell on
the disabled list Thursday for inflammation in his right shoulder
and planned to recall right-hander Jason Green from Triple-A New
Orleans. Powell was on the disabled list two previous times this
season with right shoulder tendinitis, causing him to miss 57
games. Astros doctors recommended arthroscopic surgery. Powell
planned to seek a second opinion. He is 1-1 with a 5.67 ERA in 29
relief appearances this season.
THIS DATE IN BASEBALL (AP)
1915 - Boston opened Braves Field with a 3-1 victory over the St.
Louis Cardinals.
1956 - The Cincinnati Reds hit eight home runs and the Milwaukee
Braves added two to set a National League record for home runs by
two clubs in a nine-inning night game. Bob Thurman's three homers
and double led the Reds in the 13-4 rout.
1960 - Lew Burdette of the Milwaukee Braves pitched a no-hitter,
beating the Philadelphia Phillies, 1-0.
1965 - Hank Aaron of Milwaukee hit Curt Simmons' pitch on top of
the pavilion roof at Sportman's Park in St. Louis for an apparent
home run. However, umpire Chris Pelekoudas called him out for
being out of the batter's box when he connected. The Braves won
the game, 6-2.
1982 - The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Chicago Cubs, 2-1, in a
21-inning game. It was the second-longest game in Cubs history
and took two days to complete.
1982 - Pete Rose of the Philadelphia Phillies made his 13,941st
plate appearance in a 5-3 triumph over the Houston Astros to move
into first place on the career list, ahead of Hank Aaron.
1995 - Tom Henke became the seventh pitcher to reach 300 career
saves, surviving a rally by the Atlanta Braves in the ninth
inning of the St. Louis Cardinals' 4-3 victory.
Today's birthdays: Albie Lopez 29, Bobby Higginson 30.
