ARIZONA 5, PHILADELPHIA 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Damian Miller won't worry about rest until
the offseason. Miller had a career-high four hits and drove in
two runs, and Armando Reynoso pitched 7 2/3 strong innings as the
Diamondbacks beat Philadelphia 5-1 Wednesday to complete a
three-game sweep.

"It's all right," Miller said about catching a day game after a
night game. "I have all of November, December and January to
rest."

Miller was 7-for-13 in the series as Arizona won its fourth
straight to move within one-half game of first-place San
Francisco in the NL West, pending the outcome of the Giants' game
at Montreal on Wednesday night.

"For him to catch a day game after a night game this time of year
is real admirable," Arizona manager Buck Showalter said. "The job
he did behind the plate is what I take out of it. He makes 150
decisions a game back there. It means more than four at-bats."

Reynoso (10-7) allowed one run and six hits. He struck out seven,
walked one and retired 16 consecutive batters at one point.

Byung-Hyun Kim struck out Scott Rolen to end a first-and-third,
two-out threat in the eighth. Matt Mantei pitched a scoreless
ninth, despite loading the bases.

Mantei injured his rib cage during the inning, but remained in
the game.

"It was nothing too extreme where I couldn't pitch," said Mantei,
who plans to see a doctor when the team returns to Arizona.

The Diamondbacks finished the season 8-1 against the Phillies and
are 16-2 against them over the last two years.

"They really handed it to us," Phillies manager Terry Francona
said. "Some games they barely beat us, and some games they
knocked us around."

The Diamondbacks broke open a 2-1 game with three, two-out runs
in the sixth, capped by Miller's two-run double.

Bruce Chen (6-2) nearly escaped a first-and-third, no-out jam by
getting Matt Williams and Steve Finley to pop out. But Greg
Colbrunn delivered a RBI double to make it 3-1, and Miller
followed with a shot to deep right-center.

Chen, making his seventh start for Philadelphia since coming over
from Atlanta in a trade for Andy Ashby, allowed five runs and
eight hits in seven innings.

CHICAGO 7, BALTIMORE 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Mike Mussina usually has a tough time beating
the Chicago White Sox when he's healthy.

Riddled with flulike symptoms, he didn't have a chance.

Frank Thomas hit his AL-high 37th homer and Jim Parque finally
got his 10th win as Chicago beat Mussina and the Baltimore
Orioles 7-3 Wednesday night.

Mussina (7-13) felt awful before the game but gamely attempted to
pitch anyway. He was finally lifted after giving six runs and
seven hits in only four innings, his shortest stint of the
season.

"He felt terrible starting the game and it just didn't happen for
him," Orioles manager Mike Hargrove said. "We had no choice -- we
had nobody else to start."

Thomas hit a three-run shot in the second inning to put the White
Sox up 6-0. He has two homers and eight RBIs in his last two
games and ranks second in the AL with 111 RBIs.

Parque (10-4) allowed three runs, five hits and two walks in
six-plus innings. The left-hander was 0-2 in five starts since
July 15, including three straight games without a decision.

"Tonight was a step in the right direction," White Sox manager
Jerry Manuel said. "He still needs a lot of pitches to get outs,
and that worries me. But all in all, it was a better effort
tonight."

Bill Simas retired all six batters he faced and Keith Foulke
worked the ninth.

Catcher Brook Fordyce homered for Baltimore, his fifth since
being traded from the White Sox in the July 29 trade that sent
Charles Johnson and Harold Baines to Chicago. But the White Sox
put the Orioles in an early hole by teeing off against Mussina,
who fell to 9-11 lifetime against Chicago. It was the third
straight defeat and sixth in seven starts for Mussina, who
finished second in the Cy Young balloting behind Boston's Pedro
Martinez last year.

Mussina was in trouble from the outset. Ray Durham led off the
first inning with the first of his three singles, Thomas walked
and Magglio Ordonez got an infield hit to load the bases before
Herbert Perry hit a two-run double. Jose Valentin singled in a
run in the second before Thomas hit a 1-2 pitch an estimated 415
feet to dead center.

"The pitch was supposed to be down and away. That was one mistake
that hurt us," Fordyce said. "Mike usually doesn't miss by that
much."

HOUSTON 11, PITTSBURGH 10

HOUSTON (AP) - The number of homers at Enron Field no longer
surprise the Houston Astros.

Houston hit six homers for the second time in four days to take
over the National League home run lead, outlasting the Pittsburgh
Pirates 11-10 Wednesday night.

The Astros have an NL record 18 home runs in the last four games.
Their six on Wednesday gave them 188, three more than the St.
Louis Cardinals this season.

"I think we have more home run hitters in our lineup than St.
Louis does," said Lance Berkman, who hit his 17th in the second
inning. "Especially now that (Mark) McGwire is out of their
lineup. But we have a lot of them and it's a lot of fun to play
on this team. It's fun to watch the other guys hit."

Houston has seven players with double-digit homers, six of them
with 15 or more. While the team has already topped the old club
record, set in 1998, for home runs in a season by 20, Jeff
Bagwell isn't overly impressed.

"I don't think this is the best power-hitting team we've had,"
Bagwell said. "The best was in 1998. We were pretty good in 1994
too.

"We have the makings of a great offensive team here. But the
lineup's never the same. Sometimes we have Daryle Ward in there,
sometimes Lance and sometimes Mitch (Meluskey). It's hard to say
what team we have.

"And the park (new Enron Field) obviously has something to do
with it. This isn't the Astrodome."

The Pirates agree.

"You have to pitch inside to righthanders here," manager Gene
Lamont said. "If you don't, they'll lean out and pull the ball
into those left-field seats. It's so tempting. I think it's
easier here than in Fenway. It's much different when you come to
Houston now. The Astrodome was just the opposite of this park."

The Pirates used a home run to help them come back in the ninth,
nearly completing a nine-run rally. Pittsburgh scored eight runs
in the final two innings and had the tying run at second when the
game ended.

Scott Elarton (13-4) won his fourth straight decision and the
ninth in his last 10. Elarton allowed five runs and eight hits in
7 1/3 innings to improve to 7-1 at Enron Field.

Chris Truby hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning to break a
2-2 tie. Bagwell connected in the fourth and Moises Alou hit his
fifth homer in four games in the fifth.

Dan Serafini (1-2) lasted 4 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs on
six hits, four of them home runs.

TEXAS 5, NEW YORK 0

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Instead of making his scheduled start in
Triple-A on Wednesday night, Brian Sikorski beat the New York
Yankees.

Sikorski pitched into the eighth inning of his major league
debut, allowing just four hits and no runs, as the Texas Rangers
snapped their 10-game losing streak to the Yankees with a 5-0
victory Wednesday night.

"Sometimes you wonder if it is ever going to happen. I was in the
right spot at the right time, I guess, and it worked out for me,"
said Sikorski, who has played pro ball since 1995.

"It was something you dream about as a kid, and all of a sudden
you find yourself out there on the mound."

While Texas was able to snap its losing streak to New York,
Rangers' center fielder Gabe Kapler was unable to extend his
28-game hitting streak. He was 0-for-4, ending the longest
hitting streak in the majors this season.

"Something like this, even if you are having a good time with it,
it takes a toll on you," Kapler said. "I sat in my chair today
before the game, and I was really tired, really mentally tired.
But I'm not one of those guys to say I'm glad it's over because I
would have liked it to go on."

Sikorski was pulled from the game after walking Derek Jeter to
lead off the eighth. Mike Venafro finished the four-hit shutout.

Rusty Greer had a two-run triple and Rafael Palmeiro hit his
first homer in 12 days for Texas, which avoided being swept at
home by the Yankees for the second time this season.

New York's 10-game winning streak over the Rangers had included
the seven previous games this year and three in last year's
playoffs. The Yankees have still won 39 of the last 51 games
between the two teams.

Sikorski, who was 10-9 at Oklahoma and leads the Pacific Coast
League with five complete games, struck out five and walked four
in his 108-pitch effort.

"It was exciting, but you can't enjoy anything until it is over
because you know what's sitting in the other dugout," Texas
manager Johnny Oates said. "The kid kept on coming after then. To
beat that club was a feather in Sikorski's hat. To shut them out,
that was better than expected."

After Jeter led off the Yankees' third inning with a double,
Sikorski retired 13 straight batters before walking Jorge Posada
in the seventh. He then gave up a pinch-hit single to Jose
Canseco, but both runners were left stranded when Luis Polonia
flew out to center.

"Every time we looked in, he pitched out and vice versa," Yankees
manager Joe Torre said. "He kept us on our heels. I give him
credit for not losing his composure."
