PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Matt Williams is hitting and the Arizona
Diamondbacks are winning.

Williams homered, doubled and drove in five runs as the
Diamondbacks beat the Philadelphia Phillies 11-6 Tuesday night.

"Can we win without Matt in the lineup? Sure. Does having him in
the lineup and producing make that easier? Yes," Arizona manager
Buck Showalter said.

It was Arizona's third win in a row, just the third streak of its
kind for Diamondbacks since May 4.

Williams hit a two-run homer in the fourth and added a three-run
double in the ninth. He has eight RBIs in two days against
Philadelphia.

"I'm trying to do what I can," said Williams, who has been
limited to just 26 RBIs in 55 games because of an array of
injuries. "My job is to drive in runs. That's what I try to do
every time somebody's on base."

Danny Bautista and Greg Colbrunn each had three hits for Arizona.
Bautista's two-run double broke a 6-all tie in the eighth inning.

After the Phillies made it 6-all on Scott Rolen's home run in the
seventh, the Diamondbacks took the lead against Wayne Gomes (4-5)
in the eighth. Colbrunn and Damian Miller singled and both scored
on Bautista's double into the right-field corner.

Byung-Hyun Kim (3-5) pitched 2 2/3 innings for the victory. He
gave up Rolen's 21st home run.

The Diamondbacks took a 6-5 lead in the seventh when Womack hit a
two-run triple and scored on Jay Bell's sacrifice fly.

Arizona starter Geraldo Guzman cruised through four shutout
innings and took a 3-0 lead into the fifth.

Pitcher Randy Wolf's sacrifice fly and Doug Glanville's RBI
single cut the deficit to 3-2. With two outs, Bobby Abreu hit a
hard grounder back to the mound that knocked Guzman's glove off.
As Guzman was retrieving the ball, he appeared to step on it with
the back of his left foot. Abreu reached on a single and Guzman
left the game with a mildly sprained left knee.

Mike Morgan relieved and surrendered three straight RBI singles
to Rolen, Travis Lee and Pat Burrell as the Phillies took a 5-3
lead.

Philadelphia, which has gone 6-14 since it traded its ace Curt
Schilling to Arizona, has yielded 53 runs in its last five games.

"That's what good teams do," Phillies manager Terry Francona
said. "Wolf had a problem with his location, especially on his
breaking ball to left-handers. Miss with those pitches and you
tend to get hurt."

CHICAGO 14, BALTIMORE 4

BALTIMORE (AP) - The Chicago White Sox reacted quickly and
emphatically to manager Jerry Manuel's plea for a better effort.
Harold Baines and Frank Thomas both homered and drove in five
runs, and Rocky Biddle pitched seven strong innings for his first
major league win as the White Sox beat Baltimore, 14-4, Tuesday
night.

Jeff Abbott also homered for the White Sox, who received a
closed-door lecture from Manuel after Monday night's 8-2 loss to
the Orioles dropped them to 15-15 since the All-Star break.

Manuel took 15 minutes to tell his first-place team to play with
more focus and intensity. Apparently taking his words to heart,
the White Sox built a 9-2 lead after four innings against Jason
Johnson (1-9), who is winless with a 7.20 ERA in 13 starts this
season.

"It was a good response, I guess. It was a good night," Manuel
said after watching the White Sox play errorless ball and get 16
hits.

Baines had a three-run homer and a two-run double in his first
appearance against the Orioles since they traded him on July 29.

Biddle (1-1) allowed four runs, six hits and two walks in his
second start since being called up from Double-A Birmingham on
Thursday. The right-hander struck out two.

Chicago batted around in a six-run fourth inning that turned a
3-2 game into a rout. Jose Valentin doubled in a run before
Thomas hit a two-run single. After Magglio Ordonez singled,
Baines hit a drive to center that Luis Matos gloved, then lost
after his arm hit the 7-foot wall.

The three-run homer was his first hit in nine career at-bats
against Johnson. Baines chased Johnson with a two-run double in
the sixth that made it 11-2.

Johnson was charged with 12 runs, 10 earned, and 11 hits in
five-plus innings. The 12 runs allowed tied the club record set
by Scott Erickson against Detroit on July 6, 1997.

"I pitched horrible, what else is there to say?" Johnson said.
"I'm not frustrated with myself, because I know I can pitch up
here."

Thomas hit his AL-leading 36th homer off B.J. Ryan with one on in
the seventh. Mark Lewis hit a two-run shot in the Orioles' half.

Chicago took a 2-0 lead in the first when Thomas hit a
run-scoring grounder and Ordonez followed with a sacrifice fly.
Baltimore tied it in the bottom half when Albert Belle doubled in
a run and scored on Jeff Conine's single.

Abbott put Chicago up in the second with his third homer, the
first since May 20.

HOUSTON 5, PITTSBURGH 4

HOUSTON (AP) - Jose Lima was helped by home runs, rather than
just being hurt by them.

Lima recovered from a shaky start and Jeff Bagwell and Daryle
Ward hit consecutive homers as the Houston Astros beat the
Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4 Tuesday night.

Lima (5-14) gave up a home run to Adrian Brown leading off the
game, and Brian Giles hit a solo shot later in the first inning.
Lima has allowed a major league-leading 38 homers, extending his
team record.

But Lima held the Pirates to only one more run in the next five
innings to win for the fourth time in his last five decisions
dating back to July 9.

"He was dodging bullets out there all night," manager Larry
Dierker said of Lima's performance. "When I lifted him for a
pinch-hitter, I didn't do it so much to add offense as I just
thought it was time to change pitchers."

Lima gave up three runs and seven hits. He has permitted 116
earned runs this season, tied with Dierker (1970) and Jerry Reuss
(1973) for the most in a year in team history.

"A win is a win no matter what," Lima said. "When they pick up
the paper in the morning, a 'W' will be by my name.

"I felt pretty good at first but after I gave up the home runs, I
just told myself that if I wanted a chance to win this game, I
couldn't let them score any more," he said.

Pirates manager Gene Lamont didn't see anything wrong with Lima's
performance.

"Lima threw fine once he got the lead," Lamont said. "Probably
the most important thing to do is shut them down the inning after
you get the lead and he did that."

Kris Benson (8-10) lost his fourth straight decision and is
winless in his last seven starts. He lasted 6 1/3 innings and
gave up four runs on six hits and five walks.

"They're a hot hitting team right now and it's hard to keep them
down," Benson said. "Lima was out there and did a great job for
them tonight. He got better as the game went on."

Chris Truby also homered for the Astros. Houston, with the worst
record in the majors, is 17-16 since the All-Star break.

Octavio Dotel pitched 1 2/3 innings to get his sixth save in
eight chances. He gave up Pat Meares' solo homer in the ninth.

Giles homered, tripled and doubled in his first three at-bats.
With a chance to hit for the cycle, he was hit by a pitch from
Wayne Franklin in the eighth inning.

NEW YORK 10, TEXAS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The New York Yankees again made it easy
for David Cone.

After going 3 1/2 months without a victory, Cone won for the
second time in a week as the Yankees beat the Texas Rangers 10-2
Tuesday night.

Cone (3-10) was given a four-run lead before he even threw his
first pitch. He worked five strong innings. Last Thursday, Cone
won for the first time in 16 starts. In that victory over
Oakland, the Yankees opened an early 10-2 lead.

"That last win took a lot of pressure off of me," Cone said. "I
thought I was better than last time out, but I'm getting better.
I'll take them anyway I can get them."

David Justice, Scott Brosius and Paul O'Neill all hit long
two-run homers for the Yankees, who have won 10 straight games
against the Rangers, including three in last year's playoffs. New
York has won 39 of the last 50 games between the teams.

Texas' Gabe Kapler extended his hitting streak to 28 games, the
longest in the majors this season, when he bounced a single up
the middle against Dwight Gooden in the eighth. He was 0-for-3
with three flyouts until then.

"I didn't feel too good tonight. I really felt uncomfortable for
the first time in a long time," Kapler said. "I slowed down in my
last at-bat and I was able to get a better look at it."

Cone shut out Texas on three hits for the first four innings. The
Yankees, meanwhile, were building a 10-0 lead.

Texas broke through when Rusty Greer and Rafael Palmeiro hit
consecutive RBI singles in the fifth.

Cone struck out three, walked one and allowed seven hits. He is
11-3 in 20 career appearances against Texas with a 2.65 ERA.

"It's remarkable how things fall in place when you throw
strikes," manager Joe Torre said. "I took him out because it was
hot outside. He got another win, but he still needs work. He's
not there yet."

Cone was replaced by Gooden to start the sixth. Gooden finished
with four shutout innings for his second career save, his first
since 1989 with the New York Mets.

"It was nice for myself just to get on track," Gooden said. "The
last couple of games out of the 'pen I've given up some runs
early. It's been a long time since I've been out there in the
ninth inning."

Texas starter Doug Davis (4-4) after 2 2/3 innings, allowing
seven runs on 10 hits.
