That's fascinating – it really illustrates how effective a well
placed kick to the knee can be. That's one of my favorite targets –
obviously it's unwise to strike it in sparring, but in an actual self
defense situation it can be devastating. I like to use them in
conjunction with another strike, as an opponent will find it
difficult to block both. There is a Tracy Kenpo technique called
Striking Mace that uses this concept. To be honest, it's almost
exactly the same as the "outward block" application I described in an
earlier post, except that you simultaneously kick your opponent's
knee as you deliver the strike to the head.

While we are on the topic of block applications, I will share an
application for the Shotokan inward block. Like the others, it does
involve a preparatory chamber prior to the actual motion of
the "block." I will describe the motions of a "right inward block."
In order to get an idea of what the basic posture of the "chamber" is
like, throw a left punch straight in front of you and hold it out.
Now, take your right hand and extend straight out to your side. The
right hand will be parallel to the floor (and therefore perpendicular
to your body) and it will also be perpendicular to your left hand.
Now, bend your right arm at the elbow and pull your fist up to your
right ear. Your knuckles and your palm will be facing forward. This
is the basic posture of the "chamber." You can enter this chamber in
any manner that you wish, so long as your left hand is extended and
your right hand is by your ear. The descriptions I used earlier are
just a way to show you the end result.

Now, pull your left hand to your hip as your right hand sweeps across
your face. It will end up in a position similar to an outward block,
except that it will stretch across your body. This technique is easy
to demonstrate but difficult to explain, so please ask me if you need
any clarifications. My application for this motion, like the others,
will change the "chamber" into a very important part of the block,
and the actual "block" will become a strike. For the purposes of
this application, the opponent is throwing a left hook punch at our
face. This technique can be done just as easily against a right hook
punch, you'll just do your block on the opposite side.

As the hook punch comes in, your right fist comes up to your ear to
block it (in actual practice the position of the hand will probably
not be exact, but the important thing is to deflect that punch.) At
the same time, you will step in and punch the opponent with your left
hand in the solar plexus. Your left hand will then grab your
opponent's clothing (if he's not wearing a shirt you can place the
punch at the throat and then just grab there) and you will pull him
forward as your right hand sweeps across your body and strikes his
head. I've found that once again, TW-17 (known as Wind Screen) will
present itself. I can say from experience that it's an excellent
vital point and will cause terrific amounts of pain. We worked with
it tonight at the dojo. There's more information on it in my earlier
posts.

I'm fond of this application for the inward block, as it is quick and
simple, so I thought I would share it with everyone here. If anyone
would like to share some more thoughts on this application or on
punch defenses (or anything else for that matter), feel f.ree to do
so! Otherwise, I'll move on to a new topic of discussion. It's
great to have everyone here sharing their ideas, I've already learned

I very rarely see Tae get excited but she believes

in what she teaches and wants the best for her

students both in person and long distance.







“There is more to the arts than just teaching someone to pick up their foot, nad

(although with many schools that is all there is).

I watched schools for years teach students and test them,

and yet the student really didn't know much.

Tae Su Jutsu, includes history, proper technique, teaching the uses of the

muscles and why a technique must be execute a certain way, not

only for the technique to be correct, but to execute a technique

without fear of injury, either short term or long term.

It is about explaining the history of forms and where they came

from and why they can still be a useful teaching aid...

the ancient weapons and how to transfer their use into the street,

so that a student is never without a weapon should they need one.



There are two programs. Two sets of books and two sets of tapes.




One for the kids and one for the adults.




As I said before though my main thing is getting older adults into the program.




Too many schools cater to the kids, and expect the adult students to be

able to do the exercise the same way a person much younger can do them.

In older adults and even young people teaching exercise the old way

causes problems, and injuries that do not need to happen.”
