The club had a great time at the Irish Fun Race Aug 5 and then
enjoyed the Wild Cover Band at the Beach Bar. Here are the race
instuctions for the fun race won by Burke Phelps and Luke Mellman.
Tom and Jane Day's lead slipped away by not solving the riddle to
find a mark.

Next time it will be more fair if we have each skipper supply the
riddle on the mark's location and then set that mark or have a
neutral party set the marks. It was a great time since not only did
you have to sail in 20 mph wind by solve a riddle to locate the
marks:

Irish Fun Race
6 mile course(all are non spinnaker except as listed--- If these
boats race non spinnaker, they can subtract 1 min 12 sec from listed
time.

Boat model PHRF Start time (first boat starts at
designated time and all others start at the listed minutes and
seconds after start time)

Santana 21 (285) 00:00

Spindrift 22 (271) 1:24 minutes later

Hunter 23 W Spin (247) 3:48

MacGregor 26 (246) 3:54

Hunter 23.5 (235) 5:00

Beneteau 210 Spin. (222) 6:18

Mirage 236 Spin (181) 10:24

Dragonfly 800 (114) 17:05

Start: the outer mark at Paddytons Harbor. To Start: the skipper
must propose a toast to the Irish and chug his drink!

Mark One: can be found outside another boat launch ramp one mile
away. To round the mark the First Mate must drink a toast to the
duck hunters in the area and chug his or her drink!

Mark Two: can be found beyond some thin water one mile away and near
a dangerous obstruction. Sail this leg at your own risk. To round
any of the marks in the area the ship must sail within 20 yards of
your favorite mark and all sailors aboard must poor a very small
portion of their drinks in the lake as an offering to the pathetic
state of Kansas and say: Take that too, you water greedy bastards!

Mark Three: can be found, if you search your memory, as you've seen
it before, just outside the harbor where the Wild Clover Band will
play some tunes. To properly round this mark the ship's bartender
must propose a toast to the Irish and chug his drink!

Mark Four: can be found if one gazes towards the sunset, which may
not be distinguishable from the sunrise, if you have been drinking
Irish Whiskey. When you get near you can see some pipes on one shore
and some damn Englishmen's houses on the other. It's somewhere out
there but I'm mak-in no promises. If you find it--- the ship's
navigator must propose a toast to the cursed skipper in front of you
who showed you the way! and chug his drink.

The Finish: Can be found a mile and a half away, and ten paces up on
shore where the bones of many a wayward skipper have washed up in
the cove. There's a stake with a red swatch of clothing marking the
finish line. The ship's `shore landing mate' must touch the stake to
properly finish. May want to get your anchors out and rest a bit to
sober up on shore. There we can get a little sunshine and discuss
the politics of our oppressive government who squanders our water
and taxes us into poverty!

Hamburgers and Pot Luck dinner at Burke and Kim Phelps cabin at
about 6:30. Our favorite band, Wild Clover plays at 8:00.

Those were some good suggestions about racing. Kearney has its annual
cruise nite this weekend so several skippers won't be at the lake this
weekend.
For those of you who like to plan well in advance, consult the
schedule that has been on the website. I have updated it in the "Files
section". We still need volunteers for several dates.

This weekend was scheduled to be a Fun Race and Beach Party so for
those of you that are at the lake Saturday lets come up with some
wacky ideas such as a crazy course, water balloons, etc and have some
fun getting wet.

After a little talk around the docks lately we should just throw out a race and party schedule and see what happens.  I will send you all copies of the reverse start sequence for 4 and 8 mile courses, or you can have a timed start Portsmouth race. We just need hosts to volunteer to set out the buoys on the lake and host a party if you want. Also you can propose a different date if thats good for you.

So just email me to volunteer to host a date.

After you finish scooping snow, check out the pictures of BVI. We
think the club should charter two boats next winter, one catamaran and
one monohull. New pictures in the photo section or click on this link

I don't know if you have heard but 3 weeks ago Dave Klein's dad Lavern
passed away after a lengthy illness. I sent a small donation from the
Harlan Yacht Club to the memorial of the Lutheran School music dept.
Yesterday, Dave's girlfriend Cindy's mother passed away. I'm sure our
thoughts and prayers will be with them.

Just received the bank statement from First National Bank, Holdrege.
We have $450.33 in the account with no sevice charges.

A number of Patterson Harbor owners celebrated New Years with a buffet
at the Beach Bar. Lots of free food and drinks hosted by Leonard and
Delores. The lake has thawed a little in the center with lots of ducks
and eagles enjoying the open water. The warm weather should help keep
the ice thin so it clears early for spring sailing. There is a fine
new ramp completed at Gremlin that goes right to the waters edge. With
a few feet of spring filling it could be the best place to launch next
year. Someone will have to try it and see!

Check out the pictures on the webpage.

Check out the newest pictures of the Burning of the Bear. It was
another great weekend at the lake. Strong winds, 20-30, Husker football
on the big screen at the Beach Bar, Halloween party and the Burning of
Slim the bear. New photos of Gary and Kay in M26X in strong winds. May
the warm weather never end!

A perfect weekend for sailing was capped off with the Harlan Challenge
long distance race. Six cruisers left the Patterson Harbor buoy in
reverse start and with the south wind ran down to the dam with
spinnakers, then a tight reach up the lake west to a turning mark and
then tacking up into Prairie Dog Bay. Another spinnaker run or reach to
the north shore buoy with the gradual building wind.

The Mellmans held a slim lead over Ockingas and the rapidly closing
Robinsons on the beat back up the lake to the finish at Pattersons.
Taking line honors were the Mellmans with Ockinga and Robinson in a
photo finish. The handicapping worked out well for these 3 boats as any
of the three could have been the winner but the hard sailing and
skillful spinnaker work of the Mellmans kept them ahead.

The next close finish was between Sawyer and Day where the final wind
lift was required for Sawyer to finish seconds before Day. Phelps had
lost his handicap lead in the light wind at the start and brought up
the rear. As the wind picked up during the race his Mac got up to speed
and he kept up with the fleet.

Joel and Luke Mellman are the ninth winner of the traveling cup trophy
in their Hunter 23 wing keel which was the inaugeral winning boat with
previous owner Bob Holden in 1997.

After the race another short windward leeward race was held with the
Ockingas taking first, Day second and Sawyer third. Some boats
continued to cruise the lake for the remainder of the afternoon and
other Husker fans cheered on the football team at the beach bar.

That evening a fabulous dinner was held at Burke and Kim Phelps cabin
topping off a perfect day at the lake.

Race Results for Aug 27 club race. After a windless start the wind
picked up surprisingly for the reverse start 8 mile course beginning at
Pattersons and around the lake. 5-6 mph speeds were seen reaching down
to Prairie Dog from the dam and back to Pattersons.

Luke Mellman sailing solo won handily in the Hunter 23. Second was
Sawyer closely in front of Robinsons. The Hunter of Ockinga and
MacGregor of Phelps needed genoas or less ballast.

Next event: the overdue HARLAN CHALLENGE!!! Coming in Sept or Oct.

Memorial Day was a nice day at the lake for a race. The rains had
chased away a lot of tourists and the wind was perfect but overcast. 3
new pictures have been posted in the photo section.

Races were windward/leewards from outside of Pattersons to the dam with
an east wind. Both races had the same finishes: 1.Jay 2.Joel
3.Gary 4.Dave Times were recorded and Portsmouth handicapping used.
Race #2 was quite close with 30 seconds separating the finishes. Joel
and crew Bob flew their spinnaker and dueled with the Robinsons in
close sailing.
