The Harlan Challenge Distance Race was held July 4th with perfect
sailing conditions. The 12 mile race began with starting line buoys
set outside of Patterson Harbor. The first leg was downwind in an 8
mile breeze with the slower rated Santana 21 of Dave Klein starting
first. Each faster rated boat started after with the fastest Mirage
23 of Gary Robinson starting 18 minutes later.

Burke Phelps' Hunter 23 set their spinnaker at the start and caught
up with some of the boats ahead. The next leg was to the west down
the lake. Tom Day's Spindrift 22 and Jay Sawyer's Beneteau 21 dueled
for position right behind the Hunter 23.5 skippered by Greg Ockinga.

After turning the mark the south wind picked up to 14 to 17 for an
upwind leg into Prairie Dog Bay. Klein had set a very large genoa
headsail and was overpowered and couldn't keep their speed. Phelps,
Ockinga and Sawyer passed Klein with all the boats fighting the gusts
causing them to "round up" when overpowered. Sawyer and Ockinga
dueled each other for position to the east side of Prairie Dog Bay
but then lost ground to Tom Day who had taken the lead on the west
shore. After the 6 mile turn-around buoy up in the Bay, Burke Phelps
took the lead as the fleet reversed the course back to Pattersons.

The Robinsons had been overtaking the slower boats ahead until the
stronger headwinds kept them in check. Phelps led everyone with Tom
Day in second back up the lake to the east. Sawyer slowly caught Day
and held second place until a tangled sheet near the finish slowed
them to produce a close finish. Burke Phelps with Luke Mellman
steering took first place easily, Day second, Sawyer third and
Ockinga a close forth. Robinson and Klein finished a bit more behind.

Burke Phelps will hold the silver Harlan Challenge Cup for the year.

After talking to the skippers this weekend, we have most everyone
available on Friday the 4th of July. (note date change)

So lets have the Harlan Challenge reverse start race at 1:00 pm. The
slowest boat starts and 1:00 and the rest right after. The traveling
trophy is ready. We'll probably have a BBQ that night.

There are new handicap numbers out this summer that I will be using.
The distance will more likely be 12 miles so we can be done in time
for some to get home to other obligations. If the wind is lighter
I'll set a shorter course yet. You will need to decide if you are
using a spinnaker or not when you start.

We need crew! If you get this email and don't have a boat at the lake
then this is your invitation to crew on about any boat. Be there by
11:30 to jump on a boat. Race starts at 1:00. We will have 7 boats
there this weekend.

In case you haven't heard, a fine boat was lost this last Thursday in
the wind storm. Joel and Luke's M25 suffered several serious cracks
in the hull when it was blown off the trailer. New pictures of the
boat are on this Yahoo website. My Beneteau was lucky as it blew
partly off the lift and rested on the plastic dock.

Also the location of the far turn around buoy is shown on the
webpage.

Make your plans now: its 2 weeks until the Harlan Challenge Distance
Race. Sat. July 5th 1-2 pm about start time
We sailed up in Prairie Dog Bay this weekend and there is so much room
we'll have to put a couple buoys up in there and shorten one out on the
lake.

Anyway, lets take a headcount on who can make it. It's a lot of work to
organize so we need a good turnout or change the date.
I heard Dave K. probably has to go to Manhattan KS that day.
Doug O. probably is having shoulder surgery soon but maybe he can
navigate and get someone else to steer.
So---who all will be there??? Please RSVP.
Thanks.

Finally some nice strong wind for the club race Saturday. There were 5
boats out with Aaron Arehart making his racig debut in a Laser. The
strong wind and big waves gave him a huge workout and it sure is a long
way from the spillway to Bone Cove in a Laser. This was much too long a
course for a small boat in this wind, but way to go anyway Aaron.

Burke Phelps had lots of crew and won the race. All the boats suffered
round ups and certainly got their money's worth.

Saturday night there was some dock party action and there were several
BBQ's later. What a lake.

Sunday was even stronger wind, 21-26 Knots steady with gusts. Jay
finally got his B21 in the water and Burke and Jay gave it a test. The
only other boat out was Gary and Kay.

Next up is the Harlan Challenge July 5 saturday, starting mid day
sometime and sunday July 6 we'll try to have some small boat races
close to shore.

The Rust Remover race is this Sunday at 1:00 pm outside of
Pattersons. We'll set a reverse start race to visit the huge Prairie
Dog Bay--way back in there. Pick up your start time sheet at the
sailboat docks in the morning.

From the talk lately I think everyone will be there! Jay will sail
Bill Fosters boat; Joel and Luke have been there for a while at the
boat ramp; Tom Day and Dave Kleins boats never left the boat ramp
lot; Robinsons boat is on its same dock now located back in the bay;
Burke is bringing his boat down on Friday; Doug has his Hunter at the
dock; Areharts are bringing their boat to the lake any day now.
That's 8 !!!

We need crew! About every boat could use another crew.

Still working on the details-- but there will probably be a BBQ at
someones cabin after the race Sunday night. Bring a covered dish and
something to burn.

e-mail me or the group if you can't make it to the race. Thanks.

Check the website for pictures of the recent sledding excursions. It's
the next best thing to sailing at the lake. Unfortunately the Robinsons
are in Texas and missed all the freezing temperatures, wind, ice, snow
and fun?....

Reverse start medium distance cruiser race this Sat. Sept 15 at 2:00
pm. Pick up your start time and course sheet at the sailboat docks
before the race. We'll sail across and down the lake and into Prairie
Dog and back. A nice cruise with mid 70's temperatures and fair winds.
Watch the Huskers at 7 pm at the Beach Bar and join the pot luck
dinner.

5 boats are expected so don't miss this chance to support the club at
Harlan. Finally the Trimaran will be able to join the race, of course
with a much later start! Let's see if he can catch us.

Here's a possible plan for some racing: June 16 is near the summer
solstice so we could call it a Sailstice race. (The northern solstice
is in June on Earth, when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer
in the Northern Hemisphere)

This would get us tuned up for the Harlan Challenge on June 30th. With
the high lake level it will be neat to race to a buoy up around the
bend in Prairie Dog.

We could have some BBQ or social get together with these as well.

Let me know if you plan to be at the lake either of these weekends and
I'll see if we have enough boats for a race.

Thanks

Jay

Christmas Cheer

An elderly man in Phoenix calls his son in New York and says, "I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough." Pop what are you talking about," the son screams.

"We can't stand the sight of each other any longer," the old man says. "We're sick and tired of each other, and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Chicago and tell her." And he hangs up.

Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. "Like Heck they're getting a divorce, she shouts, "I'll take care of this." She calls Phoenix immediately, and screams at the old man, "You are NOT getting divorced! Don't do a single thing until I get there. I'm calling my brother back and we'll both be there tomorrow. Until then don't do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?" And she hangs up.

The old man hangs up his phone, smiles and turns to his wife. "They're coming for Christmas and paying their own way."

The club had a great time at the Irish Fun Race Aug 5 and then
enjoyed the Wild Cover Band at the Beach Bar. Here are the race
instuctions for the fun race won by Burke Phelps and Luke Mellman.
Tom and Jane Day's lead slipped away by not solving the riddle to
find a mark.

Next time it will be more fair if we have each skipper supply the
riddle on the mark's location and then set that mark or have a
neutral party set the marks. It was a great time since not only did
you have to sail in 20 mph wind by solve a riddle to locate the
marks:

Irish Fun Race
6 mile course(all are non spinnaker except as listed--- If these
boats race non spinnaker, they can subtract 1 min 12 sec from listed
time.

Boat model PHRF Start time (first boat starts at
designated time and all others start at the listed minutes and
seconds after start time)

Santana 21 (285) 00:00

Spindrift 22 (271) 1:24 minutes later

Hunter 23 W Spin (247) 3:48

MacGregor 26 (246) 3:54

Hunter 23.5 (235) 5:00

Beneteau 210 Spin. (222) 6:18

Mirage 236 Spin (181) 10:24

Dragonfly 800 (114) 17:05

Start: the outer mark at Paddytons Harbor. To Start: the skipper
must propose a toast to the Irish and chug his drink!

Mark One: can be found outside another boat launch ramp one mile
away. To round the mark the First Mate must drink a toast to the
duck hunters in the area and chug his or her drink!

Mark Two: can be found beyond some thin water one mile away and near
a dangerous obstruction. Sail this leg at your own risk. To round
any of the marks in the area the ship must sail within 20 yards of
your favorite mark and all sailors aboard must poor a very small
portion of their drinks in the lake as an offering to the pathetic
state of Kansas and say: Take that too, you water greedy bastards!

Mark Three: can be found, if you search your memory, as you've seen
it before, just outside the harbor where the Wild Clover Band will
play some tunes. To properly round this mark the ship's bartender
must propose a toast to the Irish and chug his drink!

Mark Four: can be found if one gazes towards the sunset, which may
not be distinguishable from the sunrise, if you have been drinking
Irish Whiskey. When you get near you can see some pipes on one shore
and some damn Englishmen's houses on the other. It's somewhere out
there but I'm mak-in no promises. If you find it--- the ship's
navigator must propose a toast to the cursed skipper in front of you
who showed you the way! and chug his drink.

The Finish: Can be found a mile and a half away, and ten paces up on
shore where the bones of many a wayward skipper have washed up in
the cove. There's a stake with a red swatch of clothing marking the
finish line. The ship's `shore landing mate' must touch the stake to
properly finish. May want to get your anchors out and rest a bit to
sober up on shore. There we can get a little sunshine and discuss
the politics of our oppressive government who squanders our water
and taxes us into poverty!

Hamburgers and Pot Luck dinner at Burke and Kim Phelps cabin at
about 6:30. Our favorite band, Wild Clover plays at 8:00.

Those were some good suggestions about racing. Kearney has its annual
cruise nite this weekend so several skippers won't be at the lake this
weekend.
For those of you who like to plan well in advance, consult the
schedule that has been on the website. I have updated it in the "Files
section". We still need volunteers for several dates.

This weekend was scheduled to be a Fun Race and Beach Party so for
those of you that are at the lake Saturday lets come up with some
wacky ideas such as a crazy course, water balloons, etc and have some
fun getting wet.

Just received the bank statement from First National Bank, Holdrege.
We have $450.33 in the account with no sevice charges.

A number of Patterson Harbor owners celebrated New Years with a buffet
at the Beach Bar. Lots of free food and drinks hosted by Leonard and
Delores. The lake has thawed a little in the center with lots of ducks
and eagles enjoying the open water. The warm weather should help keep
the ice thin so it clears early for spring sailing. There is a fine
new ramp completed at Gremlin that goes right to the waters edge. With
a few feet of spring filling it could be the best place to launch next
