Pictured this month is Burke Phelps' Hunter 23 winning the 2008 Harlan Challenge Distance Race. Luke Mellman helped skipper and is shown here sailing upwind into Prairie Dog Bay. Tom Day was second and Jay Sawyer third in a close finish with Greg Ockinga. 4 of the 6 boats were quite close together throughout the race. Klein and Robinson couldn't hold the pace sailing in the building south wind going into Prairie Dog Bay.
Water has continued entering Harlan Lake from the Republican River at Alma and Prairie Dog river. The lake level is up 23 feet and lots of the tree growth is gone. You can easily sail up around the corner to the west in Prairie Dog Bay now. The lake looks quite normal for size and depth now with the water right up to the cliffs. All the boat docks are moved back in the harbor like they were in the old days. Should even be at flood pool by late spring!
