Dear All, I couldn't resist posting this match report from 2002,
which was the laast time we faced Wormley, ironically in the Becker
Cup
Cheers

Jim Wilmott says, 'Old Bill Major's far too good for you boys', as
HTCC trounce Wormly in Cup

Wormly vrs HTCC 1st XI Becker Cup 1st Round

Wormly 150 for 9 (50 Overs) HTCC 150 for 3 (25 Overs)

I was really blown away by Sundays demolition of Wormly, in the
Becker Cup. Wormly were last year relegated from Div 2 and are
currently lying 3rd in Div 3, so not a bad team.

We put in a thoroughly professional bowling and fielding display to
restrict Wormly to 150 for 9 in 50 overs, with the bowlers H.Younis,
Elech, W.Olam and Watson all deserving praise. A special mention
should go to Mr Singh, he bowled his ten overs in the last 20 and he
came on just as Wormly were looking like they were about to get away
from us. Mr Singh, who plays most of his matches in the Saturday
second XI, as their opening bat and senior spin bowler, has gained a
reputation in the first team of coming on to bowl in big cup games,
in high pressure situations and turning the match around - he won us
the game against premiership Stevenage last year and in this game he
tightened the screws and Wormly didn't have a chance to increase the
run rate, but instead lost wickets and the scoring slowed.

In reply HTCC entered a cauldren of sledging, which intensified after
I started hitting across the line! However we had a quick start
scoring at 5 an over. Wormly were soon silenced. Hewitt (28) and
Elech put on 55 for the first wicket in 10 overs. But being able to
witness what came next, made me grateful to have lost my wicket!
Martin Mason (46* in 32 balls) and Ahmed Elech (64 in 72 balls)
completely destroyed Wormly's confidence, as well as their bowling
attack. They hit 9 huge sixes (one by Ahmed was described by Bob
Akers, our chairman, as being one of the biggest sixes he had ever
seen) and 9 fours between them and although Ahmed was dismissed near
the end, they had allowed us to reach the total in 25 overs! The
hitting by these two was phenomenal, both batsmen join the 'Two in a
Row' club and they then seemed to engage in an 'anything you can do,
I can do better' boundary competition!

What made this game extra special for me, was that one of the Wormly
bowlers turned out to be a bit of a legend for some of the 'BRSA'
veterens, myself included. Our late president Jim Wilmott, for years
(mostly the 1980's to early 90's) told us that 'Old Bill Major' was
far too good for us - I believe that this came from a game where Bill
Major had taken 9 for 105 against us (we did score 250!) and after
the game Jim said his legendary comment, 'Old Bill Major, Old Bill
Major, he's far too good for you boys'. So I was quite amazed to find
out that Bill Major was actually playing for Wormly, against us on
Sunday (Bill Major is a good left arm orthodox spinner, who I'm led
to believe used to take 100 wickets a season and is now about 58).
All in all, it has to be said that I took a great deal of personal
satisfaction from really doing a number on Bill Major's team.

Comments of the day

Sue Freer, whilst scoring was asked by the Wormly scorer if 150 was
enough runs to have scored against our team. To which Sue
replied, 'if this lot bat well, 150's going to be 150 runs too little'

Wormly opening bowler asked me on arrival 'who are you?', I
replied, 'Holtwhites Trinibis', to which he replied 'Who are you?'

Wormly opening bowler said to me at the end of the game 'don't you
lot ever come back here again', to which I replied 'Who are we?'
