I just took my first Unsupported trip, just a short 25 mile each way over
night shake down cruise on my 2007 GTO. It did hold up to the 75 lb.
load on the tail end but I am sure the 2004 GTR with its all one piece
construction & wider range gearing would have given me more confidence
and comfort. I found that even 20" wheels on rumble strips are
dangerous. 16" wheels I think would be unmanageable. Our rumble strips
are only 4" long bars spaced apx. 4" but often are outside the white
margin stripe, thus encroaching on our territory in areas of narrow
shoulders.
My load was heavy because I used some of my dinghy cruising camping gear
rather than purchase new lighter weight gear just for a trial run. But
weight carrying capacity should definitely be considered since we can
really only load the single rear drive wheel.
My Arkel recumbent panniers, RT60, worked great. I could access them
even with the camping gear strapped on top. And when I blew the rear
tire, they were easy to remove& remount to get at the wheel removal. I
could have even removed the wheel under the horizontal paniers but much
easier to work on the machine with no luggage.
