The recent 20% off sale at REI included the CatEye SingleShot Plus
integrated (no separate battery pack) rechareable headlight, the first
time I've seen it listed anywhere as in stock, let alone at a sale
price, so I ordered one. It arrived a week later, and works really
well on my Dahon Mu SL. At night, it is twice as bright as my previous
favorite (CatEye Opticube EL530), with a wider field of view, and adds
a flashing mode for daytime use.
Despite its oval shape, the SingleShot Plus casts a nicely round beam,
so may be usefully mounted either vertically or horizontally. It may
also save money long term by being easily rechargeable (and easily
unclippable from the bike for doing that.)
As more cars add daytime running lights, I consider it increasingly
important for bike commuters to also be lit up in daytime. As I've
used it for commuting this week, I've noticed folks finding it hard to
even pretend they don't see me when it is on. :)
The only downside of the new light is that it didn't include a mount
suitable for bikes without handlebars (such as our under-seat steering
recumbent trikes.) Fortunately, separate mounts are readily available
to correct that ommission.
