It felt good to get back on the GT3 today and actually be able to go
somewhere other than the plowed path around our lake. The entire 10
mile paved off-road ride accessible from our home was finally ice-free
enough to ride today, though the temperature was still in the high
30s, and the wind stiff. Took 45 minutes to do the whole route, at 132
average and 148 max heart rate, and using 604 Calories (according to
my Garmin Forerunner 305.) I haven't hooked up its cadence sensor to
the GT3 yet, because I carefully filed it away someplace since
forgotten. My cadence is usually 80-90 RPM when measured manually.
On finishing that, my wife hopped on the GT3 and rode it another 4+
miles to our local bike shop, which has just made arrangements to
stock a GT3, in case anyone else agrees with us that a folding trike
is worth its added cost. I ran along behind, and was surprised to
discover both the time and the calories used were almost the same,
(though of course less ground was covered in the process) The average
and peak heart rate was also much higher (158 average and 172 max.)
Too bad trikes aren't allowed in triathlons - then all I'd have needed
to complete the day would have been a swim.
I also rode about the same distance (and over some of the same route)
yesterday on a Sun EZ3-USX delta trike, and found that a much harder
workout, mostly due to its added weight (65#) and height on another
windy day. As I finished that ride, I was glad not to be having to
take that trike on a century.
Next project may be my wife figuring out how to add a warm seat cover
for her winter riding. She's also now in the market for cycling shoes,
after trying my very comfy Pearl Izumi ones today.
