Hey Richard et al,

Wow Vancouver. Darn I wish I had have had a moment to catch up with you on the
rides (is that too many hads to make sense). In fact I would like to build some
kinda time machine thingy that lets me travel back in time and space to both
those rides so I can catch up with all the folk on them and hear their stories –
of both the ride and how they ended up on it and all the rest of the stunning
tales I hear from people on the rides.

I visited Vancouver – only for a day or so and was amazed to learn that there
had been so much done in cycling (I had heard about over the years) without a
huge and effective lobby group – how does this happen? I was actually in
Vancouver sussing out the possibilities of a ride there and concluded that the
Island or the Okanogan (sop?) might be possibilities – whatdyareckon?

Anyways to your question – we are formulating our plans for the next rides at
the moment and will be making our super duper stupendous announcements about
forthcoming rides soon (ishJ). A hint for the Trojans who remain on this list
is that the MPum ride will be the only ride for this year in SA and the route
and dates for the next GwcBR is a tightly held secret requiring special security
clearances. However, I can reveal that I recently went on a pedal along the
south coast and found a way through Stillbaia, Witsand, Anniston Hermanas, Gans
Baia and more. And also that the weather forecast for next year looks lovely.

Well done for surviving the two rides and thanks for the prompt.

Regards,

Paul McKay

I am unable to make the ride and so have one ticket for sale (plus
transport for bike from jhb and back if wanted.)

To make this really appealing you can have the ticket at R400 off the
list price. That's a saving of R800 because you don't have to pay the
late entry fee either !

I did last year's ride and am particularly bitter about missing this
one ! It will be fantastic :)

Hi Lisl,

It’s still possible for your sister to enter on the ride. She just has to fill out the entry form and pay the money to our account as soon as possible.

Hi Paul

1. After 18 .00 hers on Friday 23 November 2007 ( still to be
confirmed on the bus!!??) is too late for the bike delivery.

2. These bikes require minor assembly, complete service/lubrication
and water bottle cages, computers, carriers etc attached before they
can be ridden. Otherwise cranks, pedals etc will fall off on the
ride. I rode the GWCBR last year and saw and personally experienced
this.

3. Please deliver the bikes on Thursday morning 22 November 2007. I
was previously informed that the bikes would be delivered on
Thursday so please do this if at all possible.

4. Originally there was a GWCBR camp site at the Jan van Riebeek
Sport Stadium. This would have been convenient for all the
participants who wanted to camp.

5. As you have been unable to organise a camp site at the Jan van
Riebeek Sport Stadium please consider moving the start and the "free"
bike collection point to the Point Caravan Park/camp site. You
previously recommended this camp site to folk wanting to camp. You
will recall that in 2006 the start was moved from the George Sports
Stadium to the Oteniqua Park for similar reasons.

6. Finally has the 14km hike through Boesmanskloof on day 7 been
finalised? The last info I had was:

"We are having an interesting time with Cape Nature who have said
yes, no, yes and then changed this to a limit of 100 people for the
walk. This happened at a meeting in Greyton we were not invited to
and we are seeking further discussions"

Thank you for organising the GWCBR. Good luck

Regards

James

Hi Jinx et al,

The camping ground is on the peninsular.  The stadium is at the top of the hill next to this.  A short distance the way the crow flies but around 2km for us earth bound folk.

We don’t run the campsite and cant comment on the security there.

There are no activities you have to be at on the Friday.  The ride starts on the Saturday.  For those collecting bikes, we expect you can do this after 6pm on the Friday and will confirm this on the bus down.

You wont have to wait with your luggage (and I haven’t figured out the details of how we will move this up yet as I don’t know how many people are camping).

Officially we are not allowed to camp at the stadium (I think we got lost in the Mossel Bay Bureaucracy).  I have seen the room where the bikes for the handout will be stored and I understand that officially, we are allowed to have some security folk camping there!!!

Thanks for your wishes – things are coming together pretty well (he touches wood without crossing the path of a black cat or walking under a ladder).

Regards,

Hi Paul

Would also like to make sure I understand things correctly?...

The campsite is the opposite side of the town from the Stadium? -
that the one at the top of the hill as you go out of Mosselbay (CT
side)? Are there activities we have to be at on the Friday evening?
How safe is it to "lock" up stuff (or bike) in our tents? - special
security there? - Any chance we can just crash at the stadium for the
night?

And you said luggage collection at 9.30am. Does that mean we have to
wait with our stuff till 9.30 before we can start the ride or go for
breakfast?

Looking very forward to the ride. Good luck with your last minute
preparations.

Thanks for all the questions Alex,

I first might try answer as quick as I can if I may.

1.  The start is a Van Riebeeck Stadium.

2.  We will look after folk from the start of the ride at Van Riebeeck Stadiium till the end.  We haven’t offered transfers from airports and accommodations.  There is a meter taxi service locally, some B and Bs close by and we will commit now to one collection of bags from the caravan park/campground at 9.30am.

3.  The bus will stop at the stadium and the campsite

4.  The website refers to the local information service – we are not really in a position to recommend accommodation houses

5.  Not sure what “waxed” means – we have provided the details on the website of a fella offering transfers from the airport.  This guy I have met a couple of times and enjoyed his company.

6.  Mossel Bay has a plethora of accommodation and I am sure there is plenty available.

So now I might suggest what I would do knowing all I know about the ride and having seen the location.

What I would do is book to stay at the campsite on the point – it has stunning views and is a close walk to town and some nice cafes and resturaunts.  I reckon we will be able to sort a pick up of luggage form the campsite so would rely on this for the moment knowing I can get a taxi if there is some unforeseen hiccup.  Worst case is to lock the bikes and catch a cab up and back.  If I was staying in a B and B  I would call the tourism office and find one on the top of the hill and negotiate them to move my bike

(Actually what I would really do is what I did earlier this year and carry my gear in panniers – but I know that is a rarity)

Regards,

Paul Mckay

Can one of you please tell us riders, (and preferably put up a map of
Mossel Bay, showing us exactly where) the ride is starting from on
Sat 24 Nov.

Also if riders are staying overnight in Mossel Bay and there is no
official camp site for the start, how do we get our gear up to the
start for loading on the transport trucks - its a tad difficult to
ride a bike to the start and bring along all the camping stuff -
conversely its a tad difficult to find a taxi to carry all the stuff -
what to do with the bike?

Next question - if we are catching the Organised Bus Transport from
Cape Town on 22/23, where is the landing point in Mossel Bay, and
then reverse of the above question applies - how do we get bikes and
gear to guesthouse, B&B or campsite where we are staying for the nite
or two before the ride starts? And I haven't seen a list of
suggestions on accommodation at all on the Forum - was anything sent
out?

Last year this was waxed - transport ie minibus + trailer was waiting
for riders at George Airport, we just had to find them when we got
thru with our gear - we got to the campsite and the start of the ride
was from the campsite.

How is this working this year - I was promised info on this 3 weeks
ago - still have nothing and am now getting concerned cos i don't
know where to book to stay before the start, and because I've been
too busy to apply my mind to this, there's probably no accommodation
available in Mossel Bay already.

Hi to Everyone in the Organisers Chairs

Can one of you please tell us riders, (and preferably put up a map of
Mossel Bay, showing us exactly where) the ride is starting from on
Sat 24 Nov.

Also if riders are staying overnight in Mossel Bay and there is no
official camp site for the start, how do we get our gear up to the
start for loading on the transport trucks - its a tad difficult to
ride a bike to the start and bring along all the camping stuff -
conversely its a tad difficult to find a taxi to carry all the stuff -
what to do with the bike?

hi everyone

with great sadness it looks like my son and I may have to dip out. We
are fully paid up, and will be getting the free bikes - an 18inch and
21inch

If we do have to cancel, please ask around to see if anyone will be
able to take the tickets off our hands - includes transport with bikes
from cape town to mossel bay

thanks

Hi fellow cyclists
I was wondering whether anyone alse on the ride has a gluten-free diet,
and how you are going about coping with the ride.
Please reply, and let us share ideas.

My townsfolk have been helping and sponsoring me to take part in this
event. I was also given a voucher for a weekend (for up to 6 people)on
a holiday farm in Montagu. From swimming and walks to a nice (very
large) quad bike track and horse riding - and everything in between...

I will be trying to sell you guys tickets for around 50 bucks once on
the tour. Value of the weekend (if 6 people go at R150p/p is R1800).

If you would like to see what it is about, you can check it out at
www.rietvlei.co.za , so that you know what you are getting yourself
into before buying a ticket. Would appreciate it if you would consider
helping me.

Looking so forward to this trip and meeting up with you folk. Good
luck with your last preparations.

Thanks
Jinx

I have entered the upcoming GWCBR2 from Mosselbaai to Stellenbosch
together with my partner (Entry Number 3035). We have paid the deposit
and if the remainder of the entry fee is paid by 20 Oct will qualify
for the free bikes. My partner is however unable to get away from work
and unfortunately we will not be able to participate in this year's
ride.

I am willing to sell the entries to any interested party at a discount
in order to recover some of the funds and can be contacted by return e-
mail.
