I am going to pass on the Highlander this year. I sign up for two more 24 hour solo mountain bike races which will be in late August and some 8 hr races in Sept. By the time the Highlander comes around, I'll want to take a bit of a rest from the bike.

Who will win without Ullrich and Basso there? Will there be any non- doped riders left? Uh oh, maybe the only totally clean, non drug taker left will be Lance, now conveniently retired and beyond reproach. A guy who consistently was about 10% faster at his peak than all the nasty EPO and dope takers. That's right, he just worked harder than everyone else. Or were his doctors simply a year or two ahead of the testing, like they are in track and field?
I read a quote from a Tour de France rider in the '50s..."You don't ride the Tour de France on mineral water." If we think that cyclists can average 40+ km/h over the winds, mountains, time trials, etc. for 3 weeks without "aids", well to me, that's naive.
It's a great sport and fun to watch, too
bad drugs seem to be an intrinsic part of it. By the way, I think we should test Petey for drugs or blood boosting on the next Ellicottville trip...what's in his water bottle? (AC/DC? What does that stand for?) Clearly, whatever I'm taking isn't working!!
I know there are a lot of people in our group who watch the Tour de
France. This morning, there is stunning news...

Joanne,
Wayne Holden is the tour leader for the Canada day ride, and you can contact him at holden@golden.net. If you have never come out to a ride before, just show up 30 minutes beforehand to register. You'll meet about 40 other riders: Don't be shy, most of them won't bite. We're a recreational cycling club -- not a racing club.
Details of the starting time and location are contained in the reminder message, which you probably received earlier in the week. I've included it below just for reference.
As for brochures, they're available in most bicycle shops in the K-W, Cambridge and Hamilton areas. Alternatively, you can download a .PDF version of the brochure from the club website in the Files / Administration section. The file name is GCBT2006.pdf.
Hope to see you out Saturday, John Bennett, GCBT

Are you, or someone you know, interested in becoming a (better) bike
mechanic? Did you know there's a shortage of pro bike mechanics all
across North America? And it's getting worse as bike industry growth
continues to accelerate?
Similar to UBI and BBI but much closer to home, and using the
Barnett Manual as a basic text, this is an intensive hands-on
experience, offered under the watchful oversight of Conestoga
College.

No need to worry. Noone else has a membership card either, so they
are not asked for or checked at rides. This is not necessary, since all
ride attendees are honest about their status! However, I expect that, very soon
now, the Membership Secretary may show up at a ride with a sizable pile
of cards to hand out..

Challenge was certainly the way to describe the event this year.
Opressive heat and humidity wiped most people out on the first loop
of 126 miles. Several people had to seek medical aid; one person
passed out while riding and had a personal interaction with a
mailbox, and came to lying in the ditch. One person made it back to
the school, only to pass out right after getting off his bike.
I only saw Paula at the event. I was near the rear of the pack
starting out, and once the lines thinned out, I started moving
toward the front, first hooking up with Mark Hopper of the
Randonneurs, until we caught Paula, in a small group that included a
tandem. It was getting hot even one hour into the ride, and moving
up like that took a lot out of me. Then, at the first checkpoint, I
went to pull my water bottle out of the bottle holder, and nearly
got the holder with it. The bike shop hadn't tightened the bottom
screw when they switched everything over to my new frame; 23 km of
riding Friday at Middleville, and to the first checkpoint on
Saturday, and that was enough to strip the threads, on my brand new
frame. Luckily, bike mechanics were present, and I availed myself
of their services. They got the screw back in, but with that task
taking 10 minutes, my hard won gains went down the drain. Onward to
checkpoint two, and the heat started to get to me. I couldn't keep
enough water in me to stay hydrated, and I started to get nasty
cramps in both quads and hamstrings. Eating Tums, several at a
time, and a few extra stops for stretching, got me to the end of the
first loop, but I was in rough shape. Cooled off for an hour in the
air conditioned cafeteria at the school, then, with my new buddy who
had helped me finish the first loop, and waited for me whenever I
had to stop, we set out on Loop 2. We completed one, had a little
rest, then took off for another go, just getting to the checkpoint
before it closed. We relaxed for a few minutes, then headed back to
checkpoint 4, at the school. The night riding, Loop 3, had already
started. I was in desperate need of rest, so I ate two sloppy joes,
drank a LOT of water, and went to sleep in the back of my mini-van.
I woke just before midnight, and did four Loop 3's, then decided
more sleep was in order. A few people told me not to stop, as I was
riding fast, but I could feel my leg muscles getting ready to cramp
again. So, two more sloppy joes, a LOT more water again, and back
to the minivan. I woke at 0610, got into my gear, and did 3 more
laps. I probably had time for a fourth, but I rode so hard on the
third to make time for the fourth, that I was worried about slowing
down to much and coming in a minute or two late. So, I relaxed the
last half hour. Final total - 234 miles, I think. Yet another 200
mile pin, but at least I increased my total, despite the worst
conditions of the 3 N24Cs I have attended.
So, next year I need to do 363 miles to get my 1000 mile
jersey. It is certainly doable, if I don't blow myself out on the
first loop. The amazing thing about this year is that, even with
the oppressive heat, there were several riders in the 400 miles
range, with the highest being 477 miles, and two new records were
set.
Looking forward to the 2007 National 24 Hour Challenge,
Paul Dicks

If you, or someone you know of, is an experienced wrench, and

Vermont is the premier destination in North America for sysling. I
have made it comparatively economical for you to come out on this
professionally organized tour for a fraction of that paid by John Q
public. That's the advantage of belonging to GCBT.
Right from arrival in Vermont you will be gald that you joined this
tour. On arrivel you will receive a full-colour set of maps,
elevation profiles of the tours and point-by-point route
instructions.
This is an economical tour when you consider your cost to cycle for
5 full days. Other tours might cost less, but not less per km.
Even better news than you've been told so far - currency
improvements have allowed me to provide something over and above
your originally promised five days of accommodation and five days of
cycling - you will receive not only the barbecue dinners, but you
have paid enough to enjoy a fully paid dinner at Laney's incredible
restaurant.
Many of our riders have been to Vermont and are coming back this
year to experience the challenging set of tour routes and face head-
on the challege of choosing the flavour of Ice-cream at the
Arlington dairy.
The accommodation is absolutely the best for the needs of a cycling
group. Quaint and well appointed cottages with verandas are situated
around a country green. There is cable T.V, coffee makers and small
fridges to hold your breakfast of beer in each unit.
You still have a few days to register for the trip and to get your
cheque in. I will soon have to give up the cottages that we cannot
fill. Don't say maye next year, because I'm not sure I will run it
three years in a row. Maybe next year might mean that you'll have to
go on a commercial tour and pay $1,500 to get the same thing. Drop
me a note at tomsimon@... and send in your cheque for $300
double occupancy to be away to cyclist paradise this July 2 to 7th.

Great Canadian Bicycle Tours
Finger Lakes "Whine" Tour. August 4-7, 2006.
Spend the August Civic holiday weekend cycling the beautiful Finger
Lakes region of upstate New York. The Finger Lakes area is known for
its
natural beauty, quiet country roads, and of course, its world-class
wineries. And, by coincidence, our club members are known for their
world-class whining - at least that was the case on our Ellicottville
trip. Want to prove me wrong? Then get your bike in gear and join us.
Details, details
This is a three-day bicycle touring trip, a part of Great Canadian
Bicycle Tours' summer schedule. Our home for the weekend will be Keuka
College, a small campus on the shores of Keuka Lake. We'll be staying
in
their luxury student dormitories, two people per room, with shared
bathrooms. Keuka Lake is approximately the same distance away as
Kingston, Ontario: about 350 km from southern Ontario.
The rides
Our rides are designed to introduce you to the beauty of the area.
Full
detailed maps for each ride will be provided, and you'll be riding as
part of a group. You can choose your distance: Each day has both a
short
and long ride option. Distances will be between 40 and 100 km,
although
if you get really lost you can expect to ride up to 200 km. We
recommend
not getting lost.
What's that you say? "Are there any hills"? "Are they going to be big,
nasty hills like those in Ellicottville"? "Will I be really, really
tired at the end of the day"? Ah. you're a perfect candidate for this
tour - you're whining before we even get there. Sign up and find out.
After the day's ride
After a long day on your bike, there's nothing like a full spa
treatment
and professional massage: And that's what we provide: Nothing like a
full spa treatment. Instead, you get to return to the college and
drink
beer with the rest of us. Keuka College is only a few kilometers away
from local restaurants, so if you find it necessary to eat, all you
need
is a wallet and a sense of adventure. And it doesn't even have to be
your wallet, since the shared accommodations make it easy to explore
your roommate's belongings.
Cost
If you took part in a trip like this with a high-end bicycle touring
company like Backroads, you could pay up to $4,000 for the privilege
of
riding with young, attractive, and well-off single men and women.
Since
our participants are decidedly on the lower end of the attractiveness
and income scales, we have to charge less. Much less. And because you
use your own bike, we have absolutely no quality control issues to
worry
about.
Here's what you get: 3 days riding, 3 nights accommodation, 3
breakfasts
and more fun than you can shake a stick at*. And it's only $105 per
person in double accommodation. Full payment is due upon registration.
Sign up now!
This trip is only open to GCBT members, and we expect it to sell out
fast, so sign up now. Ready? Good. Send a cheque for $105 to:
Great Canadian Bicycle Tours
P.O. Box 5, St. George, ON N0E 1N0

Hi Bridget, I have one of the maps. You can get them at Wal Mart in the sport section. They are great maps. They are very detailed and have all of the trails showing. I use mine all the time. They have ones for eastern Ontario, southern/central Ontario and cottage country.

Both Gail O'Riley and myself would like to sign-up for this trip.
Unfortunately, neither of us has sent in our annual memebership - we
have both been hoping to get out to a ride before this time.
I will send in my $105 for the trip registration, and bring my $20 to
this Sunday's (June 18th) ride.
I beleive Gail intends to send both amounts in at once.
