Hi folks and fellow Rans recumbent / tandemers / cyclists etc.
Hope Christmas and New Years was good...anyone get out for a ride???? I couldn't talk Elizabeth into it...weather you know...it's been kind of crappy here. I hope to ride more over the next couple of months on my "winter" mountain bike but I won't go out in this ice and slop.
Elizabeth and I are well and had a good but hectic Christmas. Looking forward to a "warm" trip in February and starting to plan the Spring, summer, fall rides and canoeing.
Wanted to pass along this web site:
I asked for and received for Christmas "Partners in Grime" written by a fellow Canadian (Neil and wife Sharon Anderson) about the exploits of touring across Canada. It is an excellent and humorous read and what touring is all about. I have ordered the earlier book and await the next two forthcoming. I found this book through the Adventure Cyclist mag that I get.
I like reading this kind of stuff especially through the winter.
Anyway, I thought I would pass along the info. Hope all is well with everyone and see you down the road.

FRIDAY NIGHT ICE SKATING - Skating by the Lake! Meet at 6:30 p.m. in
the change rooms at the Harbourfront skating rink. We'll skate for
60-90 minutes and then head to a nearby restaurant. There is skate
rental and skate sharpening available. The rink is located on the
south side of York Quay Centre, on Queen's Quay just west of York St.
To get there by TTC, take any streetcar from Union Station and get off
at the third stop.
Hi Everyone,
For those who did not know, I've just completed my 11'th year
with Great Canadian Bike Tours and 6'th year with the Toronto
Bicycling Network. The tbn is a year round club, with close to 1000
members and more resources, it comes as no surprise there are year
round activities.
The above was copied and pasted from the weekly bulletins of the
tbn website (www.tbn.ca), Friday night iceskating is one tbn activity
that you don't need membership to participate. We skate at public
outdoor rinks and go to a public restaurant afterwards and anyone can
come along, no day rider fee. Most Friday nights, I'll be there. The
weather is cold enough only for about 15 Fridays per winter. We skate
at a different outdoor rink weekly though HarbourFront is our favorite
and we go there 2 to 3 times every winter. After we go across the road
to the Spicy Thai restaurant, one of the few good and reasonably
priced restaurant on Queens Quay. When we go to Christie Pits...Korean
food beside the Christie Subway, Withrow Park...Greek food on the
Danforth, Kew Gardens...Whitlocks (my mountain biking pal's
restaurant), Dufferin Grove...Italian food on Bloor, City Hall...JJ
Muggs at the Eaton Centre etc. Those of you who went to Ellicotville
the May long weekend might remember I greeted a cute blonde as we rode
into Alleghany State Park, (tbn was there at the same time). The cutie
is Nancy, a former ice capades performer, she is great with beginner
ice skaters and she teases the hockey players as we try to catch her
as she glides backwards ever so effortlessly. So if you want to come
to the big smoke on Friday night for evening of ice skating, good
food, new companions and my smiling face, check the tbn website every
Monday for weekly updates.
I guess the best way to get there is QEW to Gardiner Expwy, exit at
Yonge, south to Queen's Quay, west to Natrel Rink at the Du Maurier
theatre on the south side. Parking was $8.00 last year but is $4.00 at
Captain John's Seafood but you have to walk a bit.
Hope to see some of you on Friday nights.

Hi Phil,
I just informed Jay that I would be forwarding $40.00 that Bernie sent
me while in the hospital for flowers and candy.
So in a way Bernie will be contributing himself and I'm sure that would
give him a chuckle.
C-KAP would have liked to send more but at the moment until the logs
come in and we sell a few badges, medals and jerseys were in the red
and I'm paying the bills.
Can now get my foot over the seat of my bike if I lean it over quite a
bit.
Cheers :-)))) "Sir" James

Hi Folks,
An update on the Benches project. I met today with the folks at the
GRCA to hand in the donations to date. Tax receipts and a letter of
thanks from the GRCF should be forthcoming shortly.
When I informed the Foundation last month that I had enough donations
and pledges for a bench and maybe two they immediately arranged to
have me go with them along the trail to scout out locations. This is
even before they had the money! Very trusting people. The
gentleman I have been in contact with at the foundation even put the
orders in for the benches with the works department. He put the
order in for two, although I was only sure of one...fairly confident
of another with the heartwarming responses I had been getting but
still...pretty good of them.
The locations scouted are both between Glen Morris and Paris (the
grading towards Cambridge was not the most conducive towards bench
placement). One location is at approximately km 60.5 south of the
Murray Overlook. The other is at km 61.9 which is north of the
Murray Overlook. The benches have not been placed yet and may not be
until spring as I indicated in one of my earlier emails (something
about the time between closing the Conservation Areas and the first
snow being a window of opportunity to do some major construction
projects). The contact for the donations will try to have the
construction people give him ...then he me...and me you...a "heads
up" on when they plan to place the benches in case we want to be
there at the time. There is no guarantee that we will get
notice...it could get to the top of someone's work orders and be done
without any notice but we are trying.
I would like to express my personal thanks to everyone who has
contributed and supported this project through donations and the
passing along the information on the project to others I was not able
to reach. The response has been overwhelming and a testament to the
kind of person Bernie was. There have been at least 4-5 different
organisations with whom Bernie was affliated, where individual
members, the organization or both have contributed to the project. I
have received more than one note with a cheque indicating that if I
needed more to contact them! Almost unbelievable.
To date just under $2300 has been raised.
I will let everyone know when I hear more on the placement.

Hi Jay,
James Wilson president of C-KAP which Bernie was a member.
I would like to know if the park bench and plaque is a go now that a
little time has past.
If the answer is yes it will happen then C-KAP although in the red at
the moment (until the 2005 logs come in)
would like to make a donation of about $40.00 or 50.00 dollars.
Do you know the cost of the project ?
when do you expect it done and how much have you collected so far.
Sorry I have answered your e-mail late but I have spent all summer in
hospital with a broken neck and back as the result of another cyclist
in a group deciding to make a U turn without warning.

Hi everybody, just a quick line , We'd like to say that we had a great
time at the banquet and we would like to thank everyone involved for
their hard work, which certainly paid off.
Hope everyone is well,Seasons Greetings and see you all in the spring.
Best Wishes Jan and Chris..
Thank you for the info Peter. I did check out the calender and look forward to joining the club for 2006. I have been accustomed to doing 30+ km rides on long rides and that is how I got my nickname. I also noticed that you have 200km long rides which sound like fun. Well I look forward to meeting you all in the upcoming year.

A tour of Oxford County's rolling hills passing through the metropolises of Hebron, Bright, Drumbo, Chesley, Innerkip, Cody's Corners and Golspie. Note 9:00 AM start time.
Going down those hills at only 30 kph will be a challenge but I'll
try.

Sunday October 16, 2005 10:00 am
- 3:00 pm
This event does not repeat.
Event Location: Victoria Park, Cambridge. From 401 take Hwy 24 south. Right on Main St. in Downtown Cambridge (Galt). Through North Square up the hill at Crescent Place. Follow Wentworth Ave. Left on Brant Rd, right on Salisbury Ave. to Park. Park at Highland School parking lot on left.
Phone: Jerry Manel (519) 623-2680
Notes:
An all time favourite. Tour around some of Southern Ontario’s best wetlands. St. George is a favourite lunch stop.
For Monday's Ride:
If you need more details on how to get to the ride or the area, check
out www.town.caledon.on.ca.
There may be short sections of smooth gravel, so a touring bike or
thicker tires if you have them may be a good idea. 90%+ of the route is
paved.
I may suggest a lesser travelled parallel road if the traffic is too
much on a certain stretch. I'm not sure what the holiday traffic is
like in the area.
Hope to see many of you Monday. Happy Thanksgiving!
Peter
