Is anyone from Guelph going on this ride? My car is in the shop. I would be doing the 100K.

It just dawned on me that I am hosting this coming Sunday's tour so I
guess I should get some maps ready? The rides are 80, 97, and 154 km
long and if anyone is interested in doing the longer ride please send
me a email and I will be at the start location for a 8:30a.m start
time, that way you can get an earlier start and finish.

Hope to see you out.

Ditto from me Ernie! although the climbs were tough, and we got thoroughly
soaked, and then covered in mud (on the road!), i enjoyed the day. Thanks
Jim for the spare tire ... and a great ride.

Hi,

A quick note to thank Ernie for a challenging yet fun ride this past
Sunday.

It was especially nice of you to check back on many of us during the
ride - I was just about ready to get off my bike on McNeilly but when
you rode down and told me I was almost there I just kept on pedalling!

For those that missed it - it was a good time!!

Thanks again,
Eva

Alan,

These trip reports are great reading. John seems like he's having the
time of his life. Thanks for posting the information.

A couple of our club members, Paula and Hans Jurgen, were up to no good
in Prince Edward county, near Belleville, just after the GCBT Kingston
weekend. They came upon a little restaurant with numerous bikes parked
outside. They went inside to grab a bite... and there was John Telfer
with his cross-Canada buddies, with the biggest smile on his face. What
a coincidence.

John

I'd like to share my weekend Tour for Kids experience, in hopes that
I might inspire others to participate next year!

When I arrived at the Mississauga City Centre bright and early
Thursday morning, I saw lots of anxious fellow cyclists, many of them
familiar faces from the past 3 years, others were new to the whole
experience and not sure what to expect. My butterflies quickly
settled down as I shared "welcome back" hugs and got myself ready for
the road.

Then came the opening ceremonies and the tribute for the day. The
woman who spoke is the mother of a 10 year old girl who had been
diagnosed with cancer at the age of 3 and who is now an active,
vivacious and thriving young girl. Her struggles through treatments
for many of her young years had blessed her with an "I can do
anything" determination, which has contributed to her becoming a very
promising athlete – she is a budding triathlete, and has already made
a name for herself provincially. This was the first of many
inspiring stories we were to hear this weekend.

We set out on the road at around 9:00 am. As expected it took some
time for the groups of riders to settle in and get comfortable riding
in a pack with people they don't know. I had the fortune of being
with a group of 30 wonderful people, all very passionate about
cycling and about the T4K cause. The ride to Gravenhurst was great –
the winds and temperature were reasonable, and the route was
beautiful! After a refreshing shower and dinner at the end of the
day (oh yeah, and setting up our tents!), we had some special guests
from Camp Quality, one of the three camps that T4K supports. One of
the speakers was a young woman, currently studying music in
university, who had been diagnosed with cancer when she was 7. Her
recount of her life, and the role that Camp Ooch played in helping
her and her family through the years of treatments, uncertainties and
disappointments, brought lots of emotion from the cyclists. I've
inquired as to whether I can get a copy of her very powerful speech
to share so that others can better understand the impact these camps
can have on the lives of families living with cancer.

Friday's ride was a repeat of last year! The weather was beautiful
in the morning but turned to rain, and sleet, in the afternoon. We
arrived at camp in a downpour! Fortunately, there were cabin
accommodations available so I happily abandoned the idea of setting
up my tent that night. My therapy for the evening was cleaning my
bike – little had I thought about the fact that we had to ride the
first couple kms out over a (wet) dirt road the next morning so my
efforts were somewhat to no avail, but it felt good anyway! It
rained off and on throughout the evening, and into the night.
However, spirits were not dampened! The evening saw guests from Camp
Quality talking about their programs. Not only does Camp Quality
have "summer camp" but they also now have programs at SickKids
Hospital, bringing fun and normalcy to kids who are confined to the
hospital for longer periods. It's the fundraising like T4K that
helps to make this additional programming possible.

We woke Saturday to the end of the rain, thank goodness … our soggy
shoes and bike gloves would dry out while riding! The first 30 kms
were tough sharp hills, typical of a cottage road. Given that it was
the Haliburton area, they were indeed challenging. But the day
improved greatly from there as the fog eventually lifted and we could
see beyond the next bend in the road. Actually, sometimes it was
preferable not to see what was ahead!! Working with a great bunch of
riders again, we had a fantastic day of riding – beautiful scenery
and lots of very long climbs but the last 50 kms per predominantly
downhill, which we really took advantage of and rolled into
Peterborough feeling invigorated and strong! And the bonus was that
we were staying at Trent University – a real bed for the night!! We
were well fed (you just wouldn't believe how much food we eat
throughout the day and for dinner!) and, once again, had some guests
from Camp Trillium with us for the evening. In addition to the
personal stories, we learned that Camp Trillium has just received a
donation of 450 acres on Lake Kushkog (I hope I got the name right)
in the Muskokas. They're going to build a new camp to help alleviate
the waiting list of children with cancer. Hearing this, and
realizing the need for even more financial help, one of the cyclists
challenged that if she could raise $2,000 that night, she would shave
her head. Before the night was out, the hat held $10,000!!

This morning I had very mixed feelings – anxious to get the ride over
so that my butt could begin to recover from the abuse of that small
triangle it had called "home" for the past 3 days, but also sadness
that I would soon have to say good-bye to some very good friends, for
another year. There were three tributes this morning but the one
that struck me the most was by a woman from Peterborough who lost
both of her children to cancer. Her son had been diagnosed as a very
young child, battled through treatments, and was diagnosed again
twice with a different cancer both times, as a teenager and again,
and for the last time as a young adult. His sister suffered from a
different cancer and lost her battle just after finishing
university. I spoke with the mother later in the day – she is an
inspiration as her message is about celebrating the short but full
lives her children lived, and about improving the quality of life for
other children with cancer.

The ride today was fabulous – more great scenery, wonderful weather,
and awesome teamwork with my fellow riders (i.e. we really
motored!). Around mid-day it clouded over and we thought we were
going to get wet but the sun came out strong for the afternoon and we
had a great time.

We arrived at Mississauga City Hall and were entertained this evening
by a young rock group called Tantrum. The lead entertainer of the
group is a 14 year old boy, Adam, who started treatment a year ago
(just days before T4K last year). Adam rode 100 kms on the Thursday
ride … and said he'd never do it again! The energy and zest for life
that this young man has is inspirational!

I said my good-byes for yet another year!

Next year, I will not ride the 850 kms as a cycling participant. I
want to give back to the organization – I will be a ride marshall for
the 4 days, helping to make the experience memorable and special for
other cyclists. I am considering participating in the National Kids
Cancer Ride – a grueling 10 day ride across the country next July.
I am also setting a personal goal to encourage 10
friends/neighbours/colleagues/fellow cyclists to partipate in T4K
next year, either as a cyclist or a volunteer. So … you'll be
hearing from me again through the winter as I follow up on that goal!

Hi Everyone,
This is not take away anyone going to Elizabeth's ride next
Sunday the 24th, but if you're at the cottage in the Muskoka area and
can't get back in time for the GCBT ride, come to a TBN ride Im
leading in Barrie. Go to the tbn website, tbn.ca and the ride is
described as "Barrie to Bass Lake" 63 and 97 km or so it should. I did
the preride yesterday and sent in the corrections today so it may not
be up yet. Just before Bass Lake is a new shopping center with Subway,
Timmies, McDonalds, Montanas and a grocery store. Lots of nice hills
on the long ride though maybe not in Leyserovich's class. There will
be a $5.00 dayrider fee if you don't have a tbn membership and you
have to sign a waiver.

Wishful thinking - not a drop of rain during today's ride. Thank
you, Dave. I haven't had an opportunity to use my climbing wheels
since Ellicottville.

Out of all the years I have been using that alias, you are the first
to ask.

That is some solid 80's metal knowledge.

Hopefully it will stop raining, and clear up sometime before
tomorrow. But things are not looking too good right now.

We were on our way home after several enjoyable days of cycling - with
the GCBT in Kingston, followed by a visit to Prince Edward County.
Driving through Grafton, we spotted a bunch o' bikes parked in front of
the Gtafton Inn. Knowing that cyclists always find the best places to
eat, we stopped for lunch there and ran into none other than
John "Fantastic" Telford. He's having a great time on his tour acroos
Canada - 140km of prairies headwind notwithstanding.

And, yes, the food was great.

I'm thinking about it Petey but only if Appleby Line & Bell School Line aren't on the route.  Not very likely so maybe you'll volunteer to ride them for me?!?

Did Tom Perry's Halton Hilly 100k last year - walked down Appleby & even that direction is scary.  Made it up bottom half of Bell School Line & after 2 tries at top part - finally got off & pushed.

And besides - only place we'll meet is at the start location - you'll be long gone by time I get back.  Except for when you ride Appleby & Bell School Line for me that is!!

The usual suspects... including yours truly. Petey, you still have time
to save face by claiming that you were up all night catering to
your "son". We'll understand if you're too tired to ride very hard.
