Those of you who know "Smilin' Johnnie" may be interested in updates
"from the road" as he crosses Canada this summer with Tour du Canada.
I've been collecting his updates as they come in, and posting them for
him at www.medcalf.ca/JohnTDC .
He enters Southern Ontario via Tobermory this weekend, destined to
arrive in Ottawa on the 9th, and then continuing on to St. John's by
Labour Day weekend.
Cheers,

Petey - we enjoyed the 115km ride immensely....thanks for such a nice route.

We had a nice beach-side lunch in Port Bruce. We 'portaged' over the bridge that was under construction.

Glad you were able to arrange for the good weather, too!

Hi Sharlene:

I did the 160, well it wound up as 168 for me on Saturday, and the 100 on Sunday.  I did go off the route a couple of times.  The sun rise was along the beach on the 160 KM route after some fast descents and before a challenging climb. (turkey Point) It was made at a different time then when I biked past it on the Saturday 160 tour.

The brightly painted old farm  implements were near the end of the 100 km ride on Sunday, in a yard on the right hand side of the road.  The old truck modified with some PTO attachment was I believe at the outset of the long ride on Saturday but had been moved to where it was when I photographed it on Monday.  The very kind folk at Byer’s General Store (with the 2 coke signs and flag) in LaSalette

Helped me locate the then missing truck.

A very minor addition to the route took me into Port Ryerse where I captured the water, boat and stuff.

I have a master route map of the area with all the routes marked, it’s too large to scan, I could photograph it and make up an Acrobat File if you want it.

As for any attachments I didn’t add any to my original email to Petey.  Perhaps they were from the Yahoo Groups thing.  I’m pretty much a Googler myself.  Take a look at Antelope Canyon on my home page, I think it’s screen 2 of www.artistic-photo.com .

If you want the map I will, hell I’ll do it anyway.  I might need it again myself.

Petey,

There are four (4) of us planning to do the 323 km route. However, that
works out to only 80.75 km per person. So sign us up for that one.

Hey Petey:

H-J, Julie and I will be riding either the 115 or the 162. One 300k
ride per season is my limit.

I’m in a quandary for this weekend with three rides from which to choose.  The 300km ride intrigues me … how many riders do you have interested, or rather committed?  Unfortunately I need to commit to weekend plans very soon but would like to factor this opportunity into the equation …

Are you actually expecting people out at 8am to go the 323km???  I normally don't come out to the London starts as I hate driving for an hour and a half when I could be biking but maybe....

Seems each time I go out for a country cruise, I find a new stretch of
smooooth new pavement these days, or I see a sign saying that a road
will be closed for a while. Conservation Drive, Sandhills, Huron
Road, Bleams thru Mannheim, Shantz Station Line past the airport and
more are closing for work, making it hard to plan a ride. Work on
Manser Road, Sawmill Road and Lobsinger Line will add to the Region's
network of bike lanes on country routes. Even Father David Bauer Drive
is finally being resurfaced and we'll see usable bike lanes at last.

Check out: http://news.therecord.com/content/384680

The Record has mashed regional road works information with the ever-
ubiquitous GoogleMaps presentation, making it the best tool out there
for knowing whether or not your favourite, or even occasional, country
ramble will be disrupted, or perhaps blessed with smoooooth new
pavement.

Hello fellow cyclists:

It is that time of year, once again, where I ask my friends, family and colleagues to support a very worthy cause.  The Tour for Kids, now in its fifth year, has established a reputation for attracting hundreds of compassionate and enthusiastic cyclists, all in support of camps that bring joy to children with cancer.

This is my fourth year participating with Tour for Kids.  It is the most difficult physical challenge I have ever undertaken.  800 kms over 4 days, lots of hills, and of course lots of headwinds!  Each year at about this time, I start to get anxious about my ability to complete the ride.  I am indeed outside my comfort zone!

This year I have not had the usual training opportunities (long weekends of cycling the extreme climbs in Ellicotville and the Finger Lakes region of New York, and a few days cycling the hills in Eastern Townships of Quebec).  I have been feeling even more anxious!  However, I think of the challenges that these children face every day and that inspires me to just get out there and "do it!".   For the kids!

In exactly one month from today I will have finished the first of four days.  I will be exhausted but also full of compassion, determination and enthusiasm to crawl out of my tent early the next morning to do it all again.  All for the kids!

Please help me support this worthy cause by pledging a donation.  You can do so online at  http://www.tourforkids.com/ontario/the_camps.asp or please contact me if you wish to give me a cheque or cash in person.  Any and all donations are welcome!  To pledge online, follow the link above, click on "Donate or Pledge" then "Pledge a Rider".  Enter KWIECIEN in the lastname field to search for my pledge page.

I thank you for taking the time to consider this cause!

It's all for the kids!

p.s.  I think you'll enjoy the photo i have on my pledge page.  It was taken in southwest england two months ago.  Luckily  I didn't have my bike with me at the time!

Thanks ... Catherine

Hello Genevieve,

There are no organized groups or leaders on our rides. Instead, you pick
up the map and cue sheet for the whichever ride distance (short, medium,
or long) you have chosen, and then ride with whomever seems to be going
your speed. At the start, the ride organizer usually asks for a show
of hands as to which riders are doing which distances, so you can have
some idea of whomever else will be doing the same route as yourself.
