I hope everyone that showed up for my ride yesterday had a good ride.
I just wish I was able to ride with all of you, but I turned back at
the 14km mark due to illness.

I'm curious as to what you thought of the route?? Do I need to make
any changes for next year????

Your feedback would be great.

petey.

For those of you that found it too "daunting" to drive to Coldwater on
September 23,you missed a beautiful ride on a beautiful day with some
wonderful (okay, a little bit quirky) people. Have a look at the
photos and see what you missed.

Hello,

If Fred Lee's throroughly researched Big Chute Burger Ride this Sunday
is a mite too far for you to go, you might consider turning up at 10
a.m. on Sunday in Courtcliffe Park in Carlisle for a reprise of the
recent Tour de Force ride routes, only this time with sunshine instead
of drizzling rain.

Since the organizers of the (highly recommended!) Tour de Force ride
marked all of the turns very clearly with spray paint on the pavement,
navigating the routes (50K or 100K) should be a snap. You can also get
a map of the ride at http://www.stopthequarry.ca/documents/RouteMap07.pdf.

The start location is at Courtcliffe Park on the road from Highway 6
to Carlisle. The park is on the left as you travel from the highway to
Carlisle on Carlisle Road.

I will be there, along with a few others, for a 10 a.m. start Sunday,
September 23. Feel free to join in, but please bear in mind that this
would be an unofficial ride, not covered by the GCBT insurance policy,
and there will be no sign-in, etc.

Hi Everyone,
I did my preride today, the good news is that all the roads are
open and the bad news is the Big Chute restaurant is closed for the
season. They had told me that Thanksgiving Day would be the last day
but they decided to close early for some reason. The restaurant at
Severn Falls at 61 km (Big Chute was at 53 km) where I stopped for pie
and coffee several years ago with Carl Freeland serves everything
except pie. Some of you are probaldly thinking, "Coldwater is a heck
of long way to go and no burger @#$%!" Just after lift lock 45 at
about 21 km into the ride I noticed the Sunnylea resort with an "Off
Season" rates sign up. I stopped but no-one was around so I left a
note. When I came home, the owner Shirley Loucks emailed me to advise
she had a single 3 bedroom and two other 2 bedroom cottages available.
They can sleep 6 to 8 people and it would cost $30 to $35 plus taxes
per person per night for Saturday the 22nd. Their phone number is
705-538-2527 and address is 117 Port Severn Rd. RR#1 Port Severn,
Ontario, L0K 1S0 or you can look at their website at
www.sunnylearesort.on.ca If you were to go there, restaurants in
Coldwater, Midland and Orilla are possibilities for Saturday night.
Air Supply is performing at Casino Rama, food isn't bad there or there
is always Webers' on the 400.
As for lunch on Sunday, I would advise to bring a picnic lunch.
There is a beautiful spot for a picnic at 51 km on the right side of
the road. There are all kinds of signs up, no camping, no campfires
etc. but if we follow the canoers/cyclist credo of take only photos
and leave only footprints, no problem. This place has granite rocks
beside the water to sit on, a beautiful view and is about 2 km shy of
Big Chute. Or you can ride another 10 km to the Severn Falls
restaurant but they don't have pie! Carl, if you bring some pie, I'll
bring some chinet pie plates and forks.
Fred Lee
P.S. amended routing to Coldwater:

400 north to past Barrie, keep right after Duckworth Street for 400
where it splits from hwy 11, take exit 137 at Coldwater, left at the T
stop (hwy 12), next right (sign says "Coldwater Business Section"),
left at 4 way stop and right at I.G.A.

Thanks Carl for hosting a great ride today. Even though I have done a
few 200km plus rides, this was my third attempt in doing the GCBT
200km ride. Back in 2005 I was banged up and tired from riding on
Friday, Saturday and Sunday and after the 80km mark on the 200km ride
I just called it quits. In 2006, after 30kms into the ride the sky
was getting real dark so I high tailed it back to the parking lot with
my tail between my legs and today I finally finished it, in part to
being pulled at various points of the ride.

Some pictures from todays ride have been posted.

i know this conflicts with the Oxford Ride by GCBT but it might be of
interest to people anyway. There is a ride on Sunday Sept. 9 out of
Carlisle and it is attempting to get as many riders as possible in
order to make a point about keeping the quarry out of the area. The
quarry, supposedly to be the largest in Ontario, promises to threaten
the quiet country roads in the area, and certainly close off all
possibility of cycling in the Carlisle/Flamborough area.

Flyers were passed out to many riders a few weeks ago as we passed
through Carlisle. If you want more information about the ride, visit

We've had several "home bike mechanics" from the GCBT area take our
course now. If you're interested, give us a call, or if you know
someone who may be, please pass along.

Winterborne Bicycle Institute Announces New Course Dates and Updates

(Guelph ON, Aug. 24) Winterborne Bicycle Institute (WBI) celebrated
a successful first year, delivering two over-subscribed bicycle
mechanics courses to bike shop owners and mechanics, and a third and
smaller course in the Spring for home mechanics. WBI presented
certificates to 22 students who successfully completed the intensive
11-day hands-on course.

WBI is an off-campus training partner of Conestoga College, Ontario's
most successful community college. In feedback through the College,
students gave WBI high marks for course content, hands-on approach,
fully-tooled workbenches and diverse array of bench bikes available
to work on. Through dialogue with students, many course modifications
and improvements have been incorporated, including a hands-on
suspension overhaul unit, wheel building guide, suspension overhaul
guide and an extensive set of technical homework assignments.

Jason Filer, a WBI partner and instructor, said, "We were fortunate
to have three classes of enthusiastic students and great support from
the bike industry. We met our business plan goals, and our course
gets better every time."

Alan Medcalf, also a WBI partner and instructor, added that, "In the
end it's all about getting more people on bikes more often and we
feel that we've found a way to help the bike industry in doing that."

WBI is also proud to announce accreditation from Shimano Canada.
Jason said this means, "Students can be sure they're gaining the most
current information and techniques for Shimano components and
technology."

The course dates for the 2007/2008 season are as follows:
   - September 24 to October 5, 2007
   - October 29 to November 9, 2007
   - December 3 to December 14, 2007
   - January 21 to February 1, 2008
   - April 14 to April 25, 2008
Registration for all course dates is now open through Conestoga
College's website at www.conestogac.on.ca. Look for Continuing
Education course code MECH1230.

WBI will also be participating at ExpoCycle for the first time, in
Montreal, Sept 9-11. This is an opportunity to drop by, meet Alan
and Jay, and learn about WBI.

For further information, contact WBI at (519) 826-0556 or

Unlike some GCBT rides where gravel &/or mountain climbing are involved, the
MS Ride was a relaxing weekend of cycling well paved & fairly flat roads.
And we were well fed the entire weekend - as you can likely tell from the
pics.

To Carl - our GCBT MS Ride Team Leader: Thank you on behalf of everyone who
participated for suggesting that GCBT enter a team this year. Of course,
you don't have e-mail so may never see this message!!

To My Dear Friend Petey: Thank you for being so computer literate & helping
with posting the pics. Your assignment is now finished. Thought my
computer problems were fixed but they are still intermittent so thanks also
for posting a message about the pics. Sometimes I have e-mail & internet -
sometimes I don't - so others, besides Carl, may or may not get this
message.

Sharlene

P.S. I don't have a problem with the really big hills on GCBT rides but
gravel I don't do quietly - right John!!
