Todays RLCM Extract with Craig Wilson Cronuula Sharks assistant coach and is from RLCM Coachtalk March 2009 - RLCM has over the years published many competitive game simulation drills which can be utilised for a multitude of results. As well as the competitive edge, the games are also designed for skill enhancement, developing teamwork and, in many cases, for physical conditioning. "How good is that? You make them play games and they achieve fitness as they go," says Wilson.
"A favourite of mine came about because I was sick of seeing everyone practising goal kicks before training. Let's face it, you have one or two goal-kickers in each side, so it's a waste of time and risk of possible injury for everyone to do it.
"So why not instead have them gripping a ball from above and trying to spin it around and juggle it without losing it? Then if they can do that, make them do it with two balls. The next progression is to allow them to hit it out of each others' hands.
"That way they learn to play for the ball or protect it and suddenly everyone is competitive. In terms of relation to the game, it's developing a much more vital skill."
In sticking with the theme of adaptability and flexibility, Wilson has another golden piece of advice - "Know what your players do from Monday to Friday".
How can you expect to get the best out of somebody if you don't know what drives them or what adversities they face?
Every team member has a different schedule and differing circumstance which may impact upon their performance and the type of preparation or prodding they require.
"Aside from being personable and showing the sign of a good man manager, knowing what your players are up to is useful in a number of ways.............

Titans cut playmaker Brad Davis to land Bird Luke Turgeon, GC Bulletin: The Gold Coast Titans have cut playmaker Brad Davis loose for next season in what could be seen as a move to free up funds for the arrival of controversial former Cronulla Sharks pivot Greg Bird. The Titans have made no secret of the fact they want Bird on their books for 2010, pending a favourable outcome when he fronts the NSW District Court today and tomorrow to learn the fate of his appeal against an eight-month jail sentence for recklessly wounding girlfriend Katie Milligan.
No need to panic, says confident Gallop Brad Walter, SMH: NRL chief executive David Gallop has urged those involved in the game to have more confidence about the code's ability to combat the AFL's push into western Sydney. Gallop has been repeatedly called on to provide a response to the AFL's expansion plans since this month's announcement that Kevin Sheedy would coach the competition's 18th team but his view is that league is in good shape - both in western Sydney and overall.
Brad Fittler in short list for Roosters Hall of Fame By James Phelps, Courier Mail -Ex Sydney Roosters coach Brad Fittler is set to make a stunning return to Bondi Junction in 2010 - and in a position no one can ever take from him. Fittler heads a shortlist of club greats vying for the honour of becoming the inaugural entrant in a new Roosters Hall of Fame. While the exact details remain sketchy, we understand the club is keen to reinforce its proud history while moving forward from the annus horribilis that was 2009.
Huddersfield Giants have signed former Gateshead player Jamie Cording for 2010, initially on a part-time contract. The 20-year-old centre or back row forward will train full-time with the Giants over the next two months as he looks to clinch a permanent deal. "It's a massive opportunity that Huddersfield have given me and I intend to take it with both hands. I want to work hard in pre-season and hopefully prove that I'm worthy of a full-time contract," he said.
Barry Berrigan bonanza for Gympie Steve Zemek, SC Daily: Gympie has landed a huge deal, signing Barry Berrigan for next season. The bright lights of the Brisbane Broncos might be a world away from the hard slog of the Gympie Devils but that's a transition former NRL star Barry Berrigan is just going to have to make. The Gympie Devils last week pulled off a recruitment coup, signing the 34-year-old former Broncos and Bulldogs hooker for next year's Caloundra RSL Cup. Berrigan's 56-game NRL career was brought to an abrupt end in 2006 after succumbing to a recurring back problem.
Clinton Toopi targets Titans dealBy Andrew Alderson, NZ Herald: Clinton Toopi is leaving rugby to join NRL club the Gold Coast Titans for pre-season training on January 4, with a season-long contract in prospect. The 29-year-old is seen as an option out wide due to his size, power and safety under the high ball. Toopi's also touted as a possible mentor for younger members of the backline such as Kevin Gordon, David Mead, Esi Tonga and Joseph Tomane with experienced centre Chris Walker heading to the UK Super League. Coach John Cartwright says provided his fitness holds, Toopi's input will be invaluable.

Todays RLCM Extract is from RLCM August 09 Coachtalk with David Waite written by Robert Rachow
.....game funnels down to concepts of space. And more specifically, how one successfully recognises and reacts to the spaces around them. Spaces can be opened up, they can be closed, they can be maintained and they can be created," Waite explains. "Even when I was a little kid coaches used to say: 'Run at spaces, not faces'. But how many coaches and players actually apply that? "Every time the ball is in hand it has an affect on the spaces which present themselves on the field.
"If young players were taught to run at gaps and create gaps at an early age, the game would be in much better shape across the board."
Spaces do not necessarily relate to the attacking side though. Possessing an awareness of space is just as much a key ingredient for a defensive player.
When you talk space you could be referring to the distance between defenders, the distance between the attacking and defending sides, the distance on the outside of the winger, the distances involved when a ball is kicked into space. The applications are virtually limitless.
All this is without considering the variables when space is analysed against time. For example, how does the concept of 'space' vary when similar distances are involved but with players of differing speed and agility?
A five metre gap between a defender and the teammate to their left may be significantly greater or smaller than the five metres to the person on their right, depending on the reaction time, favoured shoulder and footwork of the two people.
At the elite level, spaces commonly exist for a mere fraction of a second, before they disappear and an opportunity is lost.
Rugby league is in every essence a classic drama of the quick and the dead.
Hence why Waite so highly values the ability to instantaneously recognise chances and seize them......

News
Australia Win another International Series
By Gary Roberts RLCM in Leeds -
Australia beat England 46-16 on Saturday night to win the Gillette Four Nations title at Elland Road Stadium in Leeds.
Looking only at the score, one would think that Australia won the game easily - not so.
The penalties to England during the first half gave them positive field position and kept the match interesting and close. For about 60 minutes of the game this was a hard fought Test match with the score 22 to 16 in Australia's favour.
From that point on, Australia ran in 24 unanswered points from the 18 Sets [Eng 7 sets, Aust 11 sets] that remained to once again become the leading nation in the game.
To their credit, England did lift their game and showed that with more experience at this level they are possibly not all that far away from matching it with the more experienced big match Australian players.
England will learn from this series and realize the effort that is needed to become a force in the world competition.
The two young lads at half and five-eight will learn and be better players after the experience but as coach, Tony Smith, said after the game, "More halves of similar ilk are needed in the game in England to keep putting pressure on the existing players."
The big and strong Great Britain forwards showed they had aggression and ball playing skills but at times lacked the big game 'nous' in attack and ruck defence.
The England defence appeared good but they were unable contain Australia in their half of the field whereas Australia was able to control the speed of England's ruck and limit their forward movement.
During the first half, Australia was able to bring the ball back to or over the 50m mark for their kick on 10 of the 11 occasions after receiving the ball in their 'red zone'.
So, in saying the England defence was good, it might be more correct to say the England defence was good on plays one and two of the Set. However, Australia were able work over the 'markers' and England's D was broken down as the Set continued thus not allowing England any extended ruck domination.
England did look good in attack when they were in the Australian half of the field, but the majority of time they only got down there with the help of a penalty. They were unable to structure positive Sets of their own. The Australian defence controlled their 'coming out' Sets and had them struggling to get to their 50m after receiving the ball in their 'red zone'.
It was a good game for the 31,042 fans to witness. The scores were close for 60 minutes and gave England hope. It was a thrilling game to watch up to that point.
But it also showed that England still has a way to go and needs a continuation of big match games to experience and learn from the pressure and structure of play that is needed to be competitive at the top level of the international game.

RLCM Extracts - Click here to read more coaching articles
This Extract from RLCM Book 31 with Brian Canavan - Planning .........but an effective plan allowed not only for active work but time also for rest and recovery. "The body improves while it rests," he stated. "It loads up physiologically and mentally in anticipation of the next training session in which it will show an improvement." At this stage Brian equated properly planned rest and recovery sessions as important as his original point about enjoyment.
"Technically," Brian said, "you need to be aware of the term Periodisation. This involves the division of the overall training programme into periods which accomplish goals."
He went on to say that the goals should be not just general but specific. They needed to state clearly what you wanted to achieve - even at different stages on the path to the premiership rounds.
They needed also to be measurable. To this end he talked of Micro and Macro Cycles. The former are the small blocks of activities which are recurrent and the latter, planned four-week blocks of training.
Taking pre-season as an example, Brian stated that this would involve two to three four-week blocks divided into pre-Christmas, post-Christmas and trials.
He added, of course, that this was for the top level and coaches of country teams and younger groups who would not have this luxury, would need to adapt their blocks to the level of time available to them.
In organising these blocks, Brian referred to three different methods of planning. The first of these, he called The Wave Plan.
This involved alternating waves of volume and intensity. Volume referring to 'how much and how many' of an activity and intensity to 'what level'. Over the four weeks, the change in both is meant to follow a gradual curve or wave with intensity, such as more body contact, increasing in the later blocks. Brian warned of over use of the volume aspect in particular.
The Step Plan, Brian said, involved more radical change in volume and intensity in the first three weeks of each block and then a very important 'drop down, recovery week'.
The body has been challenged with significant increases in activity and the fourth week was for the mind to be challenged with different and lighter activities. This aligned with the 'body at rest' theory mentioned earlier.
Brian also stated that overseas research pointed to a greater improvement in strength and power under the Step Plan. This was probably due to the significant challenge to the body in each subsequent block.
The third method Brian labelled The Skill - Strength Plan. This basically involved enhancing skills before heavy work. That is, practice of the required skills with little fatigue before increasing time, distance and repetition loads. This plan he suggested as best fitting the country setting particularly keeping in mind the retention of players and the enjoyment aspect.
"After all," he said, "you don't want a young bloke driving an hour in his ute to get to training and then flogging him. You won't see him next week."
Finally, Brian admitted the job was a complex task. There were so many factors to be taken into account. These ranged from the level of skills already evident, the locality, the age of the participants, and in the case of some recruits moving from a country club to the top level, what he referred to as the 'training age' of the player.
"However," he implored, "plan it, allow for rest and recovery, and above all, remember why we're there - for the enjoyment and improvement."
So there we are. With that resolution for careful preparation next season, you, like that cigar chewing leader of the old television show, 'The A Team', will be able to sit back and say, "I love it when a plan comes together." Graham Lowe could return to Manly as CEO By Dean Ritchie, Daily Telegraph He may be 63 but former Manly and New Zealand coach Graham Lowe is on the verge of being named Sea Eagles chief executive. The Daily Telegraph can reveal the four factions on Manly's board - Penn family, Delmege family, Manly Leagues Club and Manly Football Club - have agreed individually to appoint Lowe. A board meeting next month is expected to confirm Lowe as the replacement for Grant Mayer, who quit the top job back in June over internal politics. Lowe, who coached Manly for three seasons between 1990 and 1992, still lives in New Zealand and would be offered a two-year deal. Read more..
Past publicans in the house of Sheens The Kangaroos coach has a family connection to one of Britain's historic pubs, writes Glenn Jackson, SMH. 'When you're in Leeds, I've found a place for you and Royce to have a drink." And sure enough, through an email sent to him some months ago, Tim Sheens and Royce Simmons, the Australian coach and his assistant, found their place to sink a pint. It just happens to be a pub that used to be owned by one of Sheens's relatives. Read more..

Extract from RLCM Junior Coach Book 3
Four Foundations of a Good Coach with Steve Gough......."There's definitely more to organisation than simply having the equipment and drills ready, although that's a good start." The benefits of good organisation will most likely be shown at the times when the fortunes of the team are waning. If you can plan ahead to these times and have activities or strategies ready, the pressure will be lessened and player morale will not slump as dramatically. Of course, a team with sound organisation is also one step ahead when it comes to avoiding form slumps in the first place. Read more..
