Peter Wallace was the target for the Souths' attack!

When Souths were in the Broncos' 'red zone', the majority of tries were scored around Wallace's position in the D line. He was on the Broncos' left side in defence.

Cory Parker added, "...you start losing a bit of trust in your defensive line and it would be fair to say, there is a bit of trust that is not there between the guys."

So with Parker saying that, one can understand a further problem that Wallace faced when big John Sutton was coming at him time and time again. Antonio Winterstein, who was playing outside Wallace, came in several times to assist him in defence, but really only created more space on the outside, giving further options for the Souths' attackers.

It is a problem that the Broncos have and all teams would have worked out Wallace's tackling style - around the legs. Souths' attacking raids moved in to the Broncos' 'red zone' and attacked from their left side after isolating Wallace with little defensive support on their right side.

It was happening all Friday night and was one of the major problems that caused a huge loss for the Broncos. However, the Broncos' coaching staff left him there to defend in that position all night.

How do they overcome the problem? Well, firstly, they can not leave him there.

Is moving him to the middle in 'red zone D' an option?

He will have more support but he will have to tackle the big boppers. At least he will have forwards around him.

But, if is not spoken about and if they continue to play him where he was on Friday night, more big scores will be registered against the Broncos in 2009.

Another problem the Broncos had was inefficient or lazy marker defence.

Repeatedly the Broncos' markers were found wanting and gave the Souths' dummy half runners easy yards which resulted in plays down the Broncos' end of the park.

Many times this problem with the Broncos' marker defence was at the beginning of the Plays in D Sets that allowed the Souths' ball players to position Wallace in the following Sets, so they could have a crack at him.

We will leave those problems with the Broncos' coaching staff to fix before they take on the Gold Coast Titans on Friday night in front of another packed house at Skilled Park on the Gold Coast.

Newtown Jets Keep on Track for the Finals.
The Newtown Jets might have made a slow start to the 2009 NSW Cup competition season but they have now won five of their last six matches. The Jets are now travelling in eighth place on the premiership table following their 36-26 win over the Auckland Vulcans at Henson Park last Saturday. The men from across "The Ditch" made the Jets work hard for this victory, as the Aucklanders led 22-16 at halftime and Newtown only claimed the lead ten minutes from fulltime. Newtown's best player was fullback Iwi Hauraki, who has shaken off early season injuries and is now one of the form players of the competition. Forwards Ray Moujalli, Khalid Deeb and James Kolomatangi paved the way for Newtown's important win. Congratulations are in order for Newtown SG Ball Cup (Under 18's) representative players Jacob Miller and Cheyse Blair who have won selection in the 2009 Australian Schoolboys Rugby League representative team, which plays Great Britain Schoolboys in a test series later this month. The Newtown Jets continue their drive towards the 2009 NSW Cup finals series when they take on the Windsor wolves (Penrith's feeder team) at the Windsor Rugby League Complex next Saturday (25th July) at 6.00pm.

RLCM Extract from a RLCM Yearbook - Cross Code Pilfering with Neil Wharton written by Robert Rachow - Stealing players from rival codes is nothing new. Dally Messenger and others before could have told you that. There's nothing new in transposing ideas from one sport over to another either.

However, it certainly has become more prominent in the 21st Century.

Searching for the edge or looking for a lateral way of approaching a problem, Rugby League coaches now appear far more comfortable to look outside their own game. They may not always find solutions, but they are certainly given plenty of ideas to consider, and not just from the other football codes. The former Redcliffe coach, Neil Wharton, spoke to RLCM recently about his approach to gathering information and looking outside the square.

AS someone who has dreamt of breaking through to the National Rugby League and is renowned for his constant striving for betterment, Neil Wharton always seeks ways of improving his knowledge.

Like many, he has found this is not always easy in a profession where data and strategy are treated in a clandestine manner and few are willing to offer their best secrets.

"A phrase I hear a lot is 'Where do I get my coach education?'," Wharton says.

"The industry is such that not many people share much at all. It's just the nature of the job."

Yet although he describes the situation as a 'shame', Wharton says after years in the industry he has grown to realise just how much ideas are worth.

Ideas mean job security, they mean respect and, in many ways, they define who a coach is.

A safer, less offensive way to gather information on coaching, he believes, is to approach mentors in other sports.

Facets of psychology, communication and organisation are much the same in any game, so there is no reason not to listen to advice, whether it come from netball, darts or swimming.

But on top of this, other sports also boast tactics, which can be translated to Rugby League. In the main, ball sports offer the most relevant information, in areas such as ball movement, off-the-ball play and defensive systems.

Wharton personally gets a lot of his ideas and inspiration from basketball. Despite not watching many actual games, he subscribes to the same type of attention to detail and lateral thinking that many basketball coaches do.

"One of the best books I ever read was Success is a Choice by Rick Pitino," says Wharton. Pitino has coached in the American National Basketball Association, but is best known for his success at collegiate level.

"I read that book about three years ago and I probably use it as my bible. It's a tremendous book.

"I read a lot of books...what you'd say were American-orientated books about people management, man management, time management, training, exercise, anything to do with sport."

But what of the actual basketball tactics that Wharton sees having particular use in Rugby League?

It is a firm belief of his that off-the-ball play will become far more technical in League as seasons go by. He says that adoption of certain techniques could even revolutionise positional play and add extra dimensions to both attack and defence........
