Discipline and Luck Worked for the Titans By Gary Roberts RLCM
A Rugby League game has many components, but the main two are Attack and Defence or A & D, the terminology used by coaches in the modern era.
There is not much between any team in these two main factors in the NRL.
All coaches and players know and understand the methods that are needed in 'D' to stop a ball carrier and the training methods that are required to practice it.
Specialized staff are employed to perfect a Defensive style and technique that is required to control the running ball carrier at the point of collision.
In 'A' the same principles apply. The team's chief ball players know how, where and when to supply the ball to runners which will give the team a positive advantage to get into a position on the field to set up try scoring opportunities.
A piece in the game that cannot be controlled is Luck. You cannot coach it. You cannot practice it but it plays a major part in every game.
Luck can be created by Discipline. Luck can happen at anytime, anywhere on the field but if you have good Discipline, it will happen more often.
The Titans on Monday night had Discipline which led to Luck being on their side.
The Titans' luck started in Parramatta's Set 1 when the Eels were bringing the ball out of their end on Play 4 of that Set. A forced pass by a Parramatta runner came loose in the tackle and resulted in a Titans' try five plays later when a kick came off the goal post padding into the hands of Luke Bailey to score a try which was converted.
Score after 90 seconds: Titans 6 Parramatta nil.
The Luck of that try was created by the Discipline of the Titans' Defence.
The Titans went on and won the game. Although scratchy at certain times, they won and received the competition two points.
In parts of the contest, the Titans did not play well. In past years they would have been defeated in this game although they led by 14 nil after 20 minutes. Parramatta showed in the first half that they could attack and get out of their half and get to the Titans' 'red zone'. This would have been noted by the Titans' coaching staff as it was corrected in the second half.
The Titans' 'Discipline' came into effect when their Defence proved once again to be impregnable.
Discipline in Defence created the Luck in Attack for the Titans to win this game 18 - 12 and to remain third on the NRL ladder.
