RLCM Extract The Kicking Game with Wayne Portlock from the RLCM COACHtalk Book
Of all the football codes jostling for position, rugby league is the one game which prides itself on running the ball more often than not.
It leads to bigger collisions, greater orchestrations of teamwork and a heightened sense of courage and pride.
But what does former first grader and specialist coach Wayne Portlock offer as advice to winning matches?
He says give the opposition a right kicking.
"What can we gain from good kicking in rugby league?" asks Portlock.
"How about the ability to score points, strong field position, repeat sets, pressure and the power to control the ebb and flow of the game?"
It all sounds pretty decent doesn't it?
More often than not though, outside the top spheres of the game, you will find the attention afforded to kicking is as an afterthought.
It is something players might practise when they get to training early or it may be something incorporated into a novelty session designed to give variety to the team's normal routine.
But clearly - in respect to the points that Portlock raises - kicking is deserving of so much more.
"One of the main problems in junior footy is that our halfback is quite often the best playmaker, best runner, most authoritative and most skilled player in general and we just expect they can kick as well," he says.
"You go into a game nominating them as the kicker to avoid confusion and just hope they get a couple of good ones away.
"But if you play a team with an effective marker system, they'll quickly work out who your regular kicker is and even your second option.
"If they get shut down and the ball gets passed instead to some regular Joe who you haven't bothered teaching to kick, you'll start wishing you hadn't ignored them and made them do laps, push-ups and tackling all year at training.......The RLCM COACHtalk Book with four coaching DVDs is distributed to RLCM Paid Monthy subscribers each month [see below]
