One Error Changed the Game - 'That is the NRL'
By Gary Roberts - RLCM
Score at 28 minutes: Warriors 8 Broncos nil.
Score at 80 minutes: Broncos 28 Warriors 14.
The Warriors showed again that they can play football but what went wrong on Friday night? Warriors' captain, Steve Price, said, "We can create the opportunities but it is that we are not finishing them off."
After a brilliant 28 minutes, they looked the goods as they consistently had repeat attacks at the Broncos' line and at this point they looked the better side.
The only concern was why there were not more points on the scoreboard for them. This was a similar scenario to the previous week's game against the Gold Coast Titans.

Carroll Taylor Lockyer Price Henjak Cleary
Price said, "It was like last week against the Gold Coast. We would go good, then we would give away five or six penalties and field position."
Coach, Ivan Cleary, said, "We are not getting the job done. At crucial parts of the game we are falling down. That is the NRL and we have to be better than that."
Having a further look a the statistics on the game, it all becomes clearer as to what happened and how from the point in the game on the 27th Set, the whole game turned to the Broncos' favour.
One bad pass in this Set may have caused the problems that spelt disappointment and frustration to the coaching staff and players of the Warriors at the end of the game.
At this point of the game, Set 27, the Warriors were in control. They had the ball for 18 of these 27 Sets that had been played and the results below showed they were playing confidently and positively.
Warriors 18 of 27 sets played were:
11 Positive Sets
4 Penalties
1 Try and goal
1 Penalty goal
1 Error
───────
18 Sets in total
At 28 minutes the score was 8 nil.
So what went wrong? How did it all turn against them?
The obvious stat to look at is what were the Broncos doing? They had the ball for only Nine Sets in that first 28 minutes. They were playing positively in attack and defence, but had no ball. This was because the Warriors had four penalties, scored one try, a penalty goal, so the ball was given back to them on six occasions.
A Warriors' try was disallowed on Set 19 and resulted in a penalty goal to them.
The score at this point was Warriors 8 Broncos nil.
Defence wins games and that is where the Broncos showed their spirit and the nine times they had the ball in that first 28 minutes they made positive ground on seven occasions.
So in understanding the fact that the Warriors had the game going their way from their 17 of 18 positive sets but were only able to score 8 points, it was obvious that once the statistics started to even out, the Broncos would come into the game.
However, what eventuated was beyond what is normally witnessed in an NRL game.
From this point, the drama for the Warriors unfolded. From the 28th minute to the 80th minute they only had the ball for another 18 sets, 5 in the remainder of the first half and only 13 of the 36 sets in the second half.
On the other hand, the Broncos had the ball for 36 of those 51 sets played between the 28th minute first half to the 80th minute second half.
One error in the 28th minute by the Warriors, giving the ball to the Broncos, followed by two back to back penalties, sent the Broncos on their way to a win.
The winning of this game broke the poor run the Broncos were experiencing but it should not go to the players' or coaching staff's heads.
One error changed the game - 'that is the NRL'.

Match statistics can lie but scorelines just don't
Like it or not, statistics have become a weapon of choice for coaches in today's game. They give as much time to carries as they do to courage. They talk of completion rates when in the past the term would have only applied to how many full schooners someone could carry without spilling a drop.

Extract with Leeds Coach Brian McLennan from the RLCM Yearbook
"........right zone, left zone, the middle. [We] try and have different age groups so that when we do discuss things we get a true feel of the whole team."
This is also a big part of Brian McLennan's coaching philosophy. The paramount concern for McLennan is that his players enjoy themselves, enjoy each others company and love winning.
In his experience, the main emotion players exert when they are winning is desire. As well as promoting confidence, this encourages the players to perform. Encouragement is a big part of coaching and McLennan's philosophy. Allowing players to ask questions of the coach and of their strategy, allows the coach to understand what a player thinks of the game; developing this relationship will reinforce the direction the team wants to take.
Following communication, comes the game plan. For coaches with limited time, he advises, the best thing to do is keep it simple, and play the game that suits your team.
Ultimately, this means capitalising on your strengths and effectively using your key players; your halves combination, the fullback and the hooker. Essentially, the play makers need to be comfortable and be able to communicate with each other to allow the other players to fit around them. McLennan affirms that the role of these players is necessary for success.
"You've got to promote them and [give them] ownership to do things. We'll try the fullback behind the hooker to tip him when there's good times to run, when there's lazy markers. [The] halfback should be constantly talking to the hooker." McLennan says.
The pivotal roles of the halves should also be ready to lead in defence.
While your A, B and C defenders can also claim responsibility over defence, the halves have to be ready to call the shots if necessary.
If the opposition halves are coming in to set up, then the halves must be out on the edges in defence. Inevitably, how much time a team has to devote to their defence and attack stands to how much time they have for preparation.
While the defence has to prevent the opposition from scoring tries, the attack has to cross the line to score points of their own. Whether kicking high or passing before the line; pressure needs to be applied at all times, especially when working plays four and five. McLennan stresses the importance of remaining in control.
"Plays four and five are what turn a good set into a great set. Anything that applies pressure is how you've got to work plays four and five."
Again, playing to the strengths of the team when in a position where there is time constraints is the only solution. When there is no time to implement and develop new ideas, keep it simple.
