Knights v Sharks - Mark Taufua to make most of opportunity - If Mark Taufua had his way he'd be making his first appearance for 2009 under different circumstances. After travelling to the Gold Coast as 18th man last weekend the former rugby convert has been named in the starting front row, replacing Daniel Tolar who will spend the next six weeks sidelined with a fractured knee cap.

NRL endorsed the actions of Cronulla Sharks - The National Rugby League yesterday endorsed the actions of the Cronulla Sharks in standing down Brett Seymour over an off-field incident and has also suspended Sydney Roosters player Jake Friend for two matches. Cronulla earlier today indicated its intention to stand Seymour down for two weeks and to fine him $20,000.

Momentum builds for clubs to reclaim the game - News Limited, the half-owner of the NRL, has revealed it keenly supports the league's bid for independence, stating that it does not intend to hinder reforms that include the establishment of an independent commission to run the game and ownership of the competition to be split among the 16 clubs.

Universities Rugby League Queensland (URLQ) kicks off - The 2009 Universities Rugby League Queensland (URLQ) season kicked off in spectacular fashion last night, with plenty of tries and the arrival of a handful of new stars ushering in the competition's 21st season. Defending Premiers the Griffith Dragons commenced their title defence in style, posting six tries on their way to a convincing 32-14 victory over the tireless UQ Hounds.

Referees needed in Mt Isa - Rugby league in Mount Isa is in danger of shutting down. That's the stern message from Bob Jakeman, who said play cannot continue unless more people put their hands up to referee this season. Jakeman said the increase of junior games plus the strain of all Mount Isa Rugby League matches being played on a Sunday, was making life difficult to have enough referees for matches in 2009.

NRL to hand over ownership to clubs ? - The NRL will consider handing over ownership of the competition to its clubs in the biggest structural overhaul of its history, league chief David Gallop has revealed. News Limited and the Australian Rugby League have been co-owners of the NRL since 1998 but a sub-committee is looking at a new structure which would give both organisations the chance to eliminate or reduce their involvement.
